I would feel ungrateful asking for more. They just added two synths that I had owned and thought they would never emulate:
      1. MS-20 because Korg seemed to be actively pushing emulations and reproductions.
      2. SQ-80 as it was never as high end as many of the other collection synths.
That being said, I would like a sketchpad sequencer in analog lab. Just to put together patches from different synthesizers to see how they work together.

In synth emulation, the Yamaha FS1R. Formant synthesis is one area where you can't buy the hardware and no one else has done an emulation. It would really showcase what the V Collection has been all about. Moving away from emulation, more physically modelled instruments.

Well, I was hoping for a Memory Moog, but I'll take the Korg :-)
(Was hoping, because Cherry Audio's interfaces just aren't for me, and with Arturia's emulations you always get that fantastic extra stuff they throw on top, making those instruments so much more interesting)

@@ASAPJermz I agree, except their endless encoders are awful (at least on the MIDI controllers; I haven't tried any of their other ones such as those on MicroFreak). Turning them slowly is consistently jumpy and erratic, and it's not just me, it appears to be very common from looking at their forums. It's the only thing I wish was changed about my Minilab Mk2. I wish I could know the pleasure of recording automation with endless encoders in realtime without having to go back and delete 90+% of the keyframes so the parameters aren't jumping all around.
It's a shame because the integration with Analog Lab and V Collection is incredibly good. Arturia, if anyone from your company reads this, *PLEASE* make a *strong* note to your MIDI hardware dev team to consider looking into and fixing this issue for a Mk3 lineup of Minilab, Keylab, and Keylab Essential. I will buy and spread the word with glee if you guys do. Maybe look into how Novation did their Circuit endless encoders because those ones operate quite smoothly for me at least.

Hoped for some drum solutions with the new V collection, especially since they introduced Augmented Series into it. Something like a Spark 3 to tie the entire collection up.

    • @j.du6
      @j.du6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Exactly. Fully updated Spark 2 is /almost/ great and really could use a big update to tighten it up further and make me want to use it. Simple stuff like "normalizing" and/or lowering volumes across kits, as well as better "preset" management -- along with a simple scaleable UI and stability enhancements. Tweaking/tuning the modeled kits to sound more like the drum machines they claim to be would be welcome.
As a side note I'd love for u-he to release a low resource drum synth companion to Hive, something like Microtonic but also with the ability to sound like the old classics too. Be fun to see them update the old "Love the Machines" magware drum plugins to 64 bit and put them all in a bundle. They are so immediate and good sounding. There were hundreds. I have 70 or so of them "collected" and they are so easy to get a great sound and sequence out of quickly, but are mostly Windows, and 32bit. If you search a bit you can relatively easily find the 808 and 909 kits (e.g. "ltm909" with the sequencer -- all sample based) but many of them seem to be lost IP. Be so cool to have "legal" and updated versions. Who ever worked on the various sample sets did an ace job though being sample based limits their tweakability of course. Urs/u-he (iirc) was responsible for adding the samples to the re-used sequencer container (which I believe he developed/had developed).
I am so struck by how the limitations of these plugins foster rapid music making and keep you from getting bogged down by complexity.

Go check out 'IV Vintage Drum Machines', a free collection of an absolute boatload of vintage drum machine samples (all the classics from Linn, Roland, Oberheim, Simmons and a whole lot more). Sure it'd be nice to have them load into your DAWs drum machine as complete presets, but it's pretty quick to get that set up in my experience.

I think the future is in modeling. Arturia, along with SWAM and Pianoteq make improvements in their modeling all the time, so when their new versions come out, their instruments sound even better. With samples, they take a lot of external SSD space, and longer to switch instrument; however, the modeled instruments do use processing power. It’s fun to see how much progression has happened even in the last couple of years. Thanks for the video.

Recently bought collection v on sale. Was ingoring that for a long time, because I tried demos several times on Version 4 and Version 6, but didn't like that back then.
Pigments was more than enough to cover all that sonic territory.
But. After I saw sale price for 99$ as Pigments user, it was hard to resist.
Then I discovered the most powerful thing of Collection V is preset library. Sometimes while working on a project you understand that you need specific sound, like it happened to me with Lately Bass preset. I just opened Analog lab, found it, and continued working without stopping to design a sound.
Also its nice to have such synths to fiddle with like Buchla Easel emulation or Modular V. When I want to play with some modular stuff, I just fire it up, poke virtual cables and have fun.
Arturia did great job, that's for sure. One of the best companies out there 👌
I won't buy an upgrade now, because I still have a lot synths to explore. By that time it will probably get an update or will go in sale 😅

Amen. Being able to say “ah Lately Bass here would be cool”, or something similarly iconic, is a gift. Even if sometimes it’s a case of “what’s the name of that bird in that 808 State song???” 😂

And I felt bummed when the NI store had this for £250 last month. I kept refreshing the store page for a week between TH-cam videos, back when it was V-8 collection. Then I decided I wanted it, right when the price went back up.
Originally I decided against it, just so I wouldn't get lost and distracted with all the different instruments, but now... well, I can wait till next year's sale. I had the last minute change of mind when I just decided that the good folk at Arturia deserve money for their great work.

Nice overview. The thing you didn't mention (and, to be fair, Arturia are almost silent about it in their marketing blurb) is that all of the new synths and the updated synths now support MPE. So this update adds 7 new MPE instruments to the Arturia roster. Plus the MPE implementation here is really nice, making it super easy to assign different parameters to the different expressions in a unform fashion. Don't know why they aren't shouting that from the rooftops.
Which is a pro in terms of considering the upgrade. Cons wise, not that fussed by the Augmented series, seem to be trying to cut in on the NI market, but just not quite up to par with NI hybrid romplers. Seems like an odd move from Arturia, rather than just getting on and modelling a couple more interesting synths, which is the brand here. None of the presets from the Cs80 v3 transfer to the V4, so it's very hard to A/B them, but most of the difference in sound and cpu hit seems to be coming from the new fx section, as far as I can see. A lot of the v4 presets are heaviy eq'd, chorused and lavished in reverb. So basically all the things you did to the v3 (and the original machine) to make it sound good. Not sold, especially as I'd have to recreate all my presets from scratch.
The prophet Vector interface now shows you the waveforms, rather than just an opaque knob with numbers. That's why it feels much more accessible. Plus it's now MPE, which makes it an expressive monster. Same with the five. Good sounding prophet, great. Good sounding MPE Prophet, next level.
You don't address the rationale of upgrading here, which is understandable as they give you the update for free. I agree v collection is a no brainer if you are buying it outright. Especially if you do it in one of the occasional half price sales. As to whether this upgrade is worth it, I'm firmly on the fence just now. The MPE stuff is tempting, but do I want to pay the same money again as I paid for the whole collection in the first place for two new synths and MPE upgrades to a handful of others... We'll see. I'll probably do what I always do, tinker with the demos for a couple of weeks and then impulse buy. Or wait until the next round of sales when they offer me the upgrade for 150 bucks. One way or another, there's an innevitability here. Arturia are, as you say, just one of the more interesting makers out there right now.

What do I think of the V collection? Having been a user for years, I've found that there's really a couple instruments that I can't do without but there's a lot of them I never use. And the same is true of the massive catalog of presets; I find a lot of them interesting but basically unusable in my context. That being said, the DX7, pigments, Solina, and OBX are essential to my live gear. Definitely they needed to update the Prophets! The Piano is getting better with every iteration and I've been using it more, but it's definitely a modelled vs sampled instrument, making it much lower in CPU demand but also a little less realistic. I really love the way that Arturia is bundling patch banks for tribute type artists and for specific genre's within V collection.

And their hardware synths seem fantastic (though I don't speak from experience; the OG Korg Minilogue is the most I've ever paid for a piece of music hardware, let alone synthesizers, and I haven't tried MicroFreak yet). I only hope they one day get around to fixing their terribly jumpy endless encoders (on their MIDI controllers like the Minilab and Keylab series). Turning them slowly in any direction while recording automation makes lines that look like a 2D cross-section of sandpaper under a microscope.

Got V-Collection 8 and the upgrade price is pretty good value considering the additional synths/updates. Really wish they'd go for the JX-8P next time around. PG-8X is wonderful but isn't too hot on the updates so won't be surprised if we start seeing compatibility issues with newer hardware/OSs.
So glad I went for a Keylab for my first 25+ key MIDI controller as the integration with V-Collection & Analog Lab is wonderful. Sure it's not the same has having the physical synths in front of you, but it's a damn great workflow.

I have always loved Oberheim stuff, mostly on account of Eddie Van Halen's influence on my musical path. I've grown quite fond of the CS-80, though. I know Roland has their own thing going on, but it would be nice if they would cooperate a bit with Arturia and get the D-50 in there.

Super late comment here, but Roland have their own equivalent (Roland Cloud), so things like the D-50 & JD-800 etc. that are mostly well known due to their famous samples used unfortunately are very unlikely to be shared with Arturia. You could always get a trial of Roland Clound & record a bunch of samples from it that you could then use in CMI-V or Emulator II V (or something like the TAL-Sampler). Not perfect, but probably your best bet. Alternatively get yourself a D-05 Boutique

Good morning Cameron, a tad late to the party but can you tell me if the sides of that Arturia midi keyboard are that awful brown like the white version ? And yesterday I purchased an A49 Native keyboard as an upgrade to my little Oxygen 25 and found a huge difference in "key feel" where the Oxygen 25 keys are light and easily pressed whereas the A49 keys are rather firm and sort of "CLUNK" down for want of a word of which makes me wonder how the keys feel on the midi I want to buy next the S61 Native OR whatever the "PERCEIVED" new keyboard launch is from Native in June but I'm just an amateur. I've got Pigments and would like the V9 collection but money is wittering down rapidly on what I can only describe as a "Musical Magpie Mayhem" in the software spending department with things I DON'T need but love. Anyways, digressing again I DEMOED Electra 3 from Tone2 last night and THOUGHT it was a far cry from the original fabulous Electra2 but maybe I'm going ToneDeaf in my older years !! Happy Wednesday to your Tuesday, have a Fabulous week

I generally like the V Collection. Not all of the synths are winners in my book, but it was a good grab (I have V7 plus some individual additions). I do wish the upgrade prices would also take into account whether or not you own some of their other products, their upgrade pricing can be a bit hit or miss. As for V9, I gave the newbies a test run and it has some entries I really like, but some of them I'm lukewarm on. Still not sure if I should go from V7 to V9 or not.

I have had the V Collection since version 4 and have always had a good time with it. Not all the synths,
naturally; there are some that I never use, like the Casio CZ101 emulation or the Fairlight, but I'll bet
that's true for every owner. The only disappointment I have is that certain glitch factors have not been
emulated. Specifically, the DX-7 won't glitch like the original 1983 synth (I still have mine): it doesn't
behave the same with fixed-frequency carriers, the envolopes don't get "confused" when setting Level 2
to zero along with Level 1 and trying to use Rate 1 as a delay. The Prophet VS didn't sound like a real
one (I still have one of those too) and the Synclavier's sampling function doesn't sound at all as clean
and weird as the original. Maybe V 9 improves some of that; I'll find out.
Also, I'd rather the next synth Arturia adds to the V Collection be the PPG Wave, glitches and all. Don't
have one of those, but I want one. That "click" as it jumped through wave tables is iconic and not
available in software - yet. Should be easy; it was software to begin with.

    • @waltercruz2044

There's some text where I can find these glitches more detailed explained? Got curious about them.

    • @steveditore3165
      @steveditore3165 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@waltercruz2044 Not that I know of, but then I didn't really look, just assumed nobody had
bothered to write one. Two that work great on a hardware DX-7, v.1 :
      1. Set the carrier(s) to a low fixed frequency, then program as usual above them. If more
than one carrier is involved, it helps to set them to mutally prime frequencies so no
"beating" ever happens. This creates a wavery, "watery" sort of timbre vaguely
reminiscent of an old Melotron, and can get some really unique "string ensemble"
sounds. Fast attacks on the modulators get softened, but in potentially useful ways.
      2. In an attempt to get a DAD(s)R envolope, I tried to set Level 2 to zero like Level 1 & 4,
and use Rate 1 as a "delay" to the attack. With slow Rate 2 speeds, it creates a sort of
"sloppy" section effect, but with fast Rate 2 speeds it does delay the sharp attack, but
by an unpredictable amount for each key separately, so that solid chords come out
arpeggiated, but with scattered, random timing. Manually arpeggiating the chords
on the keys enhances the effect.
Both of these "confuse" the CPU on an original DX-7; they don't work at all with
Arturia's emulation, possibly due to vastly improved CPU performance that's more
difficult to confuse. Maybe there's some way to emulate these effects in the code,
but would it work the same? Would it be worth it at all? How may others are there
that I never got around to exploring? Questions, questions ...

    • @waltercruz2044
      @waltercruz2044 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@steveditore3165 hum.... I think that your 2nd point was a 'bug' that Brian Eno used on some of his patches and was 'fixed' on MK2 (EG forced damp).

Fizmo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We need a Fizmo! Good lord. I'm old enough to remember seeing those in music stores. It was sad to see Ensoniq gasping for breath like that, with a big ol' Emu pecking away at their heads. For reals, though, I would love an ASR-10 knockoff. You can argue that they cover that with the current Ensoniq options, but there was something very specific about that sampler that made it sound different. It was really that or the Akais back then for affordable 16 bit samplers, but the ASR had a) its own special kind of sample thunk that made it easier to mix and b) those amazing f/x built in. But the real one I would want is a Waldorf MicrowaveXT. There is no 'really old synth' I have thought so many times of buying the real thing, no matter the cost and all of the problems with reliability. And I owned a Prophet 10 at one point. But the MXT was one of those synths that couldn't make a boring sound. Sadly, a huge part of that was the knobterrific interface, which would be hard to do in software. But please, please, please Arturia. MicrowveXT!
