When I was a teenager I knew an old man down the rd. He barked at me one day. "STOP GOING TO THE STORE EVERYTIME YOU NEED SOMETHING! LOOK AROUND AT WHAT YOU HAVE AN TRY TO MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU!". Couldn't see it in the moment but that old man loved me an was trying desperately to help me👍!

Single homesteading full time working Mama of 2 here! Since 2018 I've been building my inheritance of almost 6 acres of land. I keep expanding my gardens, animals, buildings etc as my budget allows. I've done it completely debt free. Yes, I've had help from my boss family and neighbors. Yes, I have failed at things. But next year, I hope to be growing all our food! It took a lot of time, patience, grace, and learning to make it. But it is worth it in the end if you don't overwhelm yourself.
    You can do it!!!!!!

Best advice ever!!! Listen up people! We thank God all the time for being out of debt. It took massive amount of work to build this place w/o debt. Well worth it all!! Husband is still working at 75. Economy is going down here, he's been cut down to 1/4 the work since company is losing big contracts for commercial buildings. We would be up a creek if we had debt. God bless you and your husband 🙏
      Have a wonderful Christmas
Mrs. josette Tharp Montgomery County, Texas 🙏
Amen to everything you said 🙏
      I'm 58
      My husband is 60
      We have no CC debit
Our home is almost paid off as we / I was raised by my grandmother, who lived through the Depression and my father, a Vietnam veteran.
I raised my children to not live above their means ,
We garden , shop at garage sales etc....
I save everything, even my butter wrappers, to butter my pans , bread pans, etc.
I keep them in a freezer bag in my freezer , there is still butter on them if you leave it out to soften and didn't put it in my butter dish fast enough .
We downsized our home back in 2016 after we tragically lost our youngest child & only Daughter at age 19
5 months after she graduated from high school
      Right here in
      Montgomery, Texas.
We still have 3 beds and 2 baths
And the plus down sizing into a smaller square foot home was we got more land to garden a lot more .
And away from a city .
Thank goodness we made that choice in 2016 after we lost our daughter on
November 26, 2014, and I just couldn't be there anymore. Plus , I physically couldn't get out of bed ,
I don't even remember the 1st couple years after I saw her killed in front of me .
But so many people we know are living in houses they can't afford because they like living up to the Jones.
I'm blessed my older sons also didn't buy crazy priced homes , as we taught them not to be materialistic.
Come this spring, we are getting chickens ,
      God bless you 🙏 ❤️

I appreciate the honest take with a sprinkling of humor. My husband and I are both working him full time, me part- time, so I can take care of the kiddos. We're doing things slowly on the property we have. The goal is to be debt free as soon as possible. We're fairly low income, so it's hard, but we're making it one baby step at a time.

Moving 3 times in 10 years after being widowed, kept me starting over in gardening. A little more each year. Had to have dump trucks of compost now make enough of my own to not have that expense. Every year add something being on a fixed income. Pretty much down to buying quail feed and firewood now and starting to save seed. Trying to figure out what more fruit like grapes to get and where to put it. Shed blocks sun and north side of house does too. Woodstove debt is now paying itself off now. Getting, splitting and stacking wood is exercise. Winter is my break time after all the canning and dehydrating is done unless a sale on meat comes up. Soon seed starting and firewood for next winter once it gets warm.

I am blessed. My property is paid for. My late husband and I bought this place in the fall of 2006. My old barn has just collapsed in on itself. I'm starting to salvage the wood siding, the uprights and the tin roof material. I'll be using a broken down flatbed trailer for a mobile chicken coop. That will be safer for my flock. I have possum, raccoon and coyote problems. I'll also be building a small outhouse. And I think I can use some of the roof material to make a windbreak on the south side on the horse's loafing shed. Have a blessed Christmas!

Having a small homestead is better than nothing. Small flock of duel purpose chickens and you have meat as well as eggs. A broody hen does the work. A garden using vertical space, a compost bin, with good dogs even a half acre is doable. Learn to make things you need from scratch, by hand and look for free things or barter. Remember you can even do it in some towns/cities. Keep learning and developing skills.

    • @JNoMooreNumbers
      @JNoMooreNumbers 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Some cities allow hens but not roosters so quail are an option. Very quiet hens and males sometimes make a wild bird sounds. Can incubate the eggs with males. Fast turnover too. Lay eggs as early as 8 weeks sometimes 12. Extra males tastes like dark meat chicken. Could raise rabbits too. Have gardens and fruits. Not a homestead to me but growing as much as I can cram and under an acre. Could do more if garage didn't shade a chunk and a few trees I can't afford to take down. Got the risky ones by the house down though.

Very good advice 👍🏻 I am careful what I post on social anymore. My husband is an engineer, and we have built up our herd over 17 years, owned multiple properties, made real estate investments, inherited equipment, etc. I don’t want some 20 something to think we go here in 5 years. I am doing some “bougie” stuff like putting HVAC in my milk room and a toilet in the barn. This is so I can age in place and continue my lifestyle. But I still started out milking a goat with one teat clipped to the fence sitting on a stump, and I was happy then as now.

I found you here and have gotten great tips that have helped us immensely over the years. Been paying off our debt, slowly introducing the changes need to our family (less waste, less excess, more sweat equity, tradition and frugality). This year we're working on our pond & barn improvements (long overdue), and re-establishing an orchard and some feed plots.

I remember when I started my first garden. I bought fancy soil and compost and started my compost pile. I went and bought every plant. I over planted everything and it all lived. I had zero blight or bugs and everything took off!!! I thought wow this is easy and I love it. I canned tomatoes and jelly and made pickles and used my dehydrator all summer!
I am now going on year 6! You would think I would have doubled or tripled that first harvest right? Nope my best year was my first year! Since then I started dealing with blight , heat issues ( Arizona) , animals , even my own dogs trying to lie in my garden beds :/ I still can my tomatoes but they haven’t ever been as abundant as that first year! I have learned a lot , I had a fall garden this year for the first time and now I am down to one broccoli plant and one lettuce due to miles or voles or somthin! Ugh! However I can now grow from seed! I have actually saved plants from blight and I eat fresh all summer. It’s also cost me 100,000 million dollars ! Ha ha keep on keep in on and next spring I am adding a couple chickens.

This is so true. We have turned our yard/home to a just less than an acre homestead....VERY EXPENSIVE...here in PA. We use all the scrapwood we have to build any new requirements for our birds. My husband has a full time job, I have two per diem jobs one being an RN and one as a helper to transfer a lady in the community. We are building our skills daily and would love for me to be able to not work in the hospital but I went to school for nursing later in life we are still paying my student loans and my husbands are already paid off. There are very long days with homesteading, homeschooling and working outside the home. We know that we need to be better off before we choose to transition anything so yep hold on for the ride! I love my husband who has worked the entire time through treatment of his pituitary tumor treatment. I pick up extra hours in my slower winter season to pay the medical bills and try to get ahead for the upcoming gardening season ....homesteading is also time expensive.

We started here with chickens in a coop that was already on the property, then we planted fruit trees and berry patches. The garden went in next. We already had eggs, veggies and berries before adding more expensive infrastructure. Then we started getting apples, peaches, pears. Then later we added goats as we had fencing already. So that added milk products and manure for the garden. With goats coming we built a goat building ourselves. We are not in debt.

I'm one of the extremely blessed inheritance of land. I unfortunately don't have the family that cares. We live on beautiful land with mountains and springs. My husband and I moved here 23+ years ago the land will be in the family for 100 years in January. We didn't have children of our own (here on earth) so we became foster parents. The children we adopted are from the gen z generation and really don't care about the land. It saddens my heart that they don't (willingly) help out. An older friend says that although it is frustrating to "warn " others and then not have them choose to act wisely , in the end , we can only advise , as we are not responsible for their decisions , after we have warned them . Words have power , and once spoken , the result is up to the hearer...and so is the burden .

6 years ago we had a chain link fence installed around our back yard , most of our back yard, for our 13 year old dog, he was our baby haha. Anyway they put it in added an opening set of section so we could open those to drive thru if needed and or take our rider thru, and 2 gates. It covered maybe .39 of a lot and we paid $6,000. No joke. We had the money but man fencing is big bucks. A 4 ft high chainlink fence. Ugh. Cha- Ching….2 years later our dog passed away, we put a garden in the next spring ,the deer jumped that 4 ft high chainlink fence and ate up a ton leaving their footprints behind, by the end of summer a storm came and laid a tree across that fence and they said $2,000. to repair the back section. Nope just rig it up best you can and my advice is you better have a non ending pile of cash flow or know how to fix and repair multi things yourself.

Patara didn’t mention, is that someone has to have a full time job to have health insurance! Until we’re all eligible for Medicare we need proper health insurance, and maybe even beyond that to cover the 20% Medicare doesn’t cover. We owe a small amount of debt on our home, mostly because we need a “deduction”. But that’s the only money we owe anything on, and we owe nothing on credit cards or vehicles. We’ve saved money (good and silver), I have a huge garden, and I can and preserve everything I can get my hands on. Thanks Patara for sharing.

      @neverettebrakensiek8771 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

So right, I have gotten all my fence from salvaging, lots of lumber, tools, hardware and many other needed useful things. If I need it, its free and or dirt cheap Id rather have that than spend more cash or rack up debt. My grandfather was a farmer and also worked, at Christmas, he'd wait till the very last moment to buy a tree, he could get a picked over tree cheap. He then took it home, cut the bottom off then cut the branches off that, drilled holes in the trunk of the tree where it was bare and stuck those branches in to make it a filled out tree. They were always nice looking trees when done. It was another lesson about how to make due, how to save money and how to make funny and cherished memories.

Great advice! Homesteading is not a cheap date. We have a 40 acre farm with chickens, ducks, rabbits and a herd of horses. Moved here 42 years ago when it was bare land. We built our barn with a lot of family help. We designed and built our house with help from over 50 friends, family, and church members. Borrowed money from family for the land. Paid it off before starting to build. Both of us worked full time jobs for 5 years but lived on less than one income so we could build our house as debt free as possible. You can learn the skills you need to do just about anything. I’m always on a new learning curve! And I try to drag as many friends as possible along with me! It makes the journey so much more fun! It’s the week before Christmas and my friend is canning her potatoes that need attention and I just finished canning venison Irish stew. You gotta do what you gotta do! Merry Christmas all and stay out of debt!

Truer words were never spoken Patara. When I heard your words about people going to debt to milk a goat, I think of people who buy horses who know absolutely about them. I have observed this with may own eyes. Additionally, people who just "jump into situations" such as buying a homestead and have no idea how to garden or about animals. I grew up on what was left of a large farm, but I don 't feel knowledgeable enough to invest in a homestead. I can garden and I do not about horses and chickens. We had 500 white leghorn chickens to take care of as a child. When! That was quite an experience as a child. We did not have room for a horse, cow, goats, or pig. Thank you for hour wonderful video Patara.

Good advice! I wound up disabled and on ssdi. When that check for back payment came, I moved to a cheaper state and bought a small piece of land. I didn't want to be stuck in an apartment with ever increasing rental costs. At least here, if I have to there's wild food (lots of oyster mushrooms this year), I own the place so I don't fear being kicked out, and I raise what food that I can. It keeps me active.. no time for pity parties. I thank God, daily, that I'm here.

It's money going out and very little coming in. Definitely not enough to pay the feed bill. I don't even want to guess what one of my eggs cost...or what that goat roast costs...or what that pulled pork costs. But I know where it comes from. And that's with me processing it all myself here on the farm. It's definitely not for the faint of heart! Farming and homesteading is a humble life. It is a lot of work and weather doesn’t stop the work. Rain, snow, winds or even tornados, a lot of planning and responsibility in taking care of the animals. They are not living in the wild and we do have to do our part! The best way to learn what it takes is best said by Paul Harvey, GOD made a farmer. There are good times and sad times that can devastate you. You keep going through the easy times and tough times! Not everyone can do everything. We have to work together and everyone do what they can. Whether it is giving your knowledge because you can’t do or doing for those who can’t and your own family. Learn in steps and build so you get a pattern down and it becomes a habit! It takes time and patience!!

When I get my property, I’ll be realistic. I know I don’t want large animals; just chickens, barn cats, a dog, and a garden which I’ll increase as times goes by. Planning on Starlink to continue working from home in a rural area.
