    I bought a used 2017 Volt with 45000 miles on it and now have put an additional 17000 in the 1st year. Car still gets 50-60+ miles depending on city vs hwy driving and climate. Of those 17k miles I've only spent 200 or so buckaroos on gas!!! That's because I do some long distance driving every couple of weeks. If I hadn't, it would be close to nill on gas! All in all I absolutely love it and found that its quick and fun enough of a vehicle that I dont feel I'm missing much not having opted for a used tesla!

    The Volt has much better range, super quiet engine BUT smaller, Clarity has a price tag to go with the extra size. Neither are cheap, but if its range you want a used volt is the way to go

    I just bought a 2017 Chevy Volt 2 weeks ago. I used to spend around $120 a week on gas driving 160 miles a day 4 days a week to work driving my 2006 mazda 3 hatchback. With the Volt, I'm only spending around $35 to $50 a week. That means more money for strippers.

      My fuel expenses are higher than yours (Volvo S80, 21.7MPG avg, 93 octane, 150~200 miles/day 5x/week)... buying a Volt next week, will be very interested to see if I can save enough for the car to pay for itself :p

    Thanks for the video! I've had my 2018 Clarity (Touring) since April of last year. I absolutely love it! Comfortable, quiet, quick, and enormous inside! Plus of the 27 000-ish miles I have driven it, less than 5 000 have been using the ICE! This makes it ridiculously cheap to run. Oh, and my non-ICE-related maintenance costs? A whopping $159, for a "brake inspection." Would buy it again in a heartbeat! Best of luck with the channel! Thanks again! -Brad(on Cars).

    1. The Volt isn't aimed at the would-be hybrid buyer who just wants a plug for a few extra MPG. It's aimed at the would-be electric car buyer who doesn't want to be restricted by the limited availability of public charging infrastructure. For most drivers, 53 miles of EV range is enough that all normal daily driving will take place on electricity. And when it's time for a road trip, there's no need to plan ahead to find charging stations and allow extra charging time---just put gas in the car and go, just like a normal gas vehicle. It's the best of both worlds.
    2. The Volt looks like a heck of a lot nicer and probably a cheaper life-time expense than the Honda.
    3. I just checked out a Volt. The Volt's biggest detractor for the area where I live would be the average height of an American male of Dutch ancestry is 6'2". The some of the girls are that tall. I'm only 6-2". Getting in requires some ducking and twisting. Once inside I'm fine with a small amount of head room. I didn't attempt the back seat.
    4. I tried the Ford Fusion hybrid. Surprisingly, they are no better.
    5. I also tried the C-Max which is far better, and has a much larger door opening. The seat is also higher so your legs are slanted down when you get up rather than parallel or up, which also makes it easier. It doesn't look any taller than the Fusion, but something is much different.
    6. I haven't seen a Honda Clarity.
    7. I'm not sure I can trust the others to be as well-engineered and inexpensive to own as the Volt, so I may be back to just getting a gas SUV. LOL!

    You forgot the most important driving issue. If you stomp on the Honda, the gas engine WILL come on... The Volt drives on pure electric no matter how fast you go or accelerate, There simply is no comparison on how they drive.

      PETER MAINWALD I always love how Volt owners harp on this fact, we’ve owned our Clarity since May of 2018, we’ve had to do that twice in all that time, who floors it from every light, you can still smoke most cars sitting next to you at the light in a Clarity, WITHOUT the ICE coming on.

      @@thomasklein4265 I don't own a Volt. I was upset that Barrack Obama bailed out GM for $60,000,000 in 2008. The result of the bailout was 2.4 billion spent on the Cruze/Volt. I bought a 2012 Cruze for $14,000 because it had black leather seats, summit white pain, 5 spoke 17 inch rims, and thick metal panels with straight folds that I knew instantly would project low frequencies from a tuned subwoofer. I also felt it gave me credibility when I criticize my 2.4 billion dollar duck.
      I like the handling of the 2012 Cruze and it won a race where the 328i BMW frame usually wins. I don't like the newer models because the folded lines on the 2012 reminds me of Gun-dam style and the heavy door panels is amazing for bass/noise isolation.
      The Volt has a 1.4 liter 85 hp ICE used for charging the battery while you are driving. The 85 hp motor is connected to a 75hp electric motor that in normal operation (used after the battery is depleated or when climbing a mountain in "mountain mode") produces 5.5 kw. The 2 motors act as a generator to power the main 150hp electric motor unless you manually press 3 buttons to have all 3 motors propel you forward with a combined 315hp (the acceleration is the same but if you wanted to drive mad you can!). It is the same as flooring the Honda.
      A large part of the not-voted-for bailout went into LG's battery design. LG made thin lithium ion batteries connected to aluminum heat sinks where most other electric cars use 18650's or 21700's. LG impresses me because they make surprisingly future-proof things. I have a LG monitor from 2003 with a 5000:1 contrast and it is still amazing. I also used a LGv20 with a 11,000 mah battery. That phone can take a picture with a 30 second shutter speed or make 120hz video in 2016. The phone was held together with 12 screws and I applied high quality thermal paste to the cpu in order to play Pokemon Go in the desert while hot-spotting the internet for people because their phones couldn't function. If your phone doesn't work because it is too hot outside it is probably better to go inside otherwise LG's got ya covered.
      In conclusion I would like to explain my critique of the bailout. Even though we think cars are great (including me), a car only benefits a few owners. If we voted for a Volt or a high speed train I think the train would win. The Volt was discontinued in 2019 and GM may need another bailout. Japan made the lithium ion cars for the US and they didn't need 2.4 billion. I actually blame Tesla for acting like the world will end if we don't stop using gas. I am digressing. My point is that we need a train.

    • @thomasklein4265
      @thomasklein4265 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jared Kaye we’re getting a train, it’s 60 billion over budget, will only go half the speed they promised, and will only take you from Sacramento to Fresno, as if anyone is in a hurry to get to Fresno 😀

      @currentautomotive430  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Asking "how often do you need to replace a battery?" about an electric vehicle is kind of like asking "how often do you need to replace a car's engine?"
      The reality is that most of the time, you just don't need to replace the Lithium-ion batteries. They're meant to last the lifetime of a vehicle and the industry standard warranty is 8 years, 100,000 miles - indicating a high level of confidence that they will not fail.

    Which button to push to stay on only EV mode in Clarity ?

    • @SJCDAVE
      @SJCDAVE 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clarity stays in EV mode unless you tell it to be in Hybrid. It switches to hybrid automatically once the battery gets too low. The engine charges the battery, which supplies power to the motors. In some full throttle situations the engine does engage the drive axle through a clutch assembly.

  • @thomasklein4265
    @thomasklein4265 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Volt is a better plug in , but the Clarity has a much better on board charger 7.2 kw vs The Bolts 3.6kw, this means that if your out and about, it makes economic sense to pay the $1.00 or $1.25 per hour to charge at a level 2 charger with the Clarity, after all, that gets you roughly 24 miles, but with the Volt, it only gets you 12 miles, and that makes it more than gasoline in cost, so the Clarity can be economically topped off through out the day with electric, the Volt, not so much.

    • @bmw803
      @bmw803 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point. Noticed the same. Paying by the hour on a Volt is pointless. I guess that's how GM designers viewed it and put a slower charger.

    Something that volt owners may or may not know. The Range Extender on the back side of the steering where noramlly a paddle shifter would be, When pressed will not only slow the car down quickly but to anyone on your rear bumper will actually see you BRAKE LIGHTS. When the car is in “ D “ or “ L “ for one pedal driving, not only are your white LED light ( Day time driving ) are lite but also your tail lamps light to make sure you are seen - coming and going. The Interior of the Premier has a thin blue light on the interior doors. At night I have a bright light in the Cubby Hole where the USB plugs are located. All this and theater lighting at night. The Chevy Volt is packed with treasures in Both Drivers Confinance packages . Lane Keep Assist , Adaptive Cruise, Blind spot monitoring plus when backing up it has rear warning if a car or pedestrian approachs . The position of the two forward seats have an excellent view forward , side and back. The one thing I wish the VOLT had would be ceiling hand grips to assist the two front passengers in getting in or out of the vehicle. That’s the only negative I have found owning it 1 month .

  • @peterdaniel66
    @peterdaniel66 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The two really shouldn’t even be compared the vault is really truly the only vehicle that straddles the fence between pure electric and EV mode where is the clarity doesn’t if you push too hard on the gas go too fast or it’s too cold the clarity’s engine will always fire up the clarity also Misses the mark terribly by not being a hatchback the trunk is very small to put things in. The clarity is also incredibly ugly and uses last generation Honda UI entertainment systems which have always been horrendous. The screen also lags.

      We’ve owned a Clarity since May 2018 You have to literally floor the car from a stop to get the gas engine to kick on, you act like your going to be flooring it of every time off the line, I also have a 2 nd generation Volt, our time on all electric, and mpg are comparable , for both cars, as for the Clarity’s trunk, it’s rather large, with a 60/40 split fold down seat, what you fail to mention is the size difference in the back seat, the Clarity’s is huge
