Great channel. I do wish he would toss us a new video every now and then. I keep watching them over and over and enjoy every time. So you're not alone.
I'm only recently getting into the pencil world, making purchases of General's and Musgrave's pencils, and only today have I dared to approach the legend of the Blackwing. Seeing that it has such a terrific pedigree of usage, I may have to pick up a box.
So unfortunate that I live so far from places where one could buy the Blackwing pencils and Field Note notebooks. I know I can buy online, but shipping is crazy expensive...
I've tried these ( 602) and didn't think they were worth all the hype and expensive price. Don't get me wrong they ARE good pencils , but you can get a lot of good pencils cheaper. They seem to be about 4B or so.
Quick question. What is the brand of that sharpener, I absolutely love it and have seen something similar albeit not as good looking made by Mitsubishi.
+Aravind Vinayakan The sharpener is a "Classroom Friendly" and you can get one from www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com/ I think it might be a rebranded Dahle, but it's a superb sharpener!
+memm The rating system is subjective. If that was the case, only super dark, hard and smudgeless pencils would get good ratings (that's a ballpoint pen haha!) I love the Blackwing because of it's darkness/smoothness/quality and in spite of it's softer point and smudging (which are part and parcel of having a darker pencil) Rating pencils was never going to be scientific, there are too many variables and I can't possibly replicate the same conditions for each test without a lab and a lot of money. My rating of each pencil is based on my personal preference and usage (I like darker pencils and only use them for writing). I see the hex rating as one perspective, perhaps you looking at the same pencil with the same characteristics would come to a totally different conclusion, that's part of the fun
The rating is influenced by the tests, but not defined by it. If I rated pencils only by their test scores, I'd be telling people which pencils are best (EG Only soft but smudgy pencils are good) The tests are more for reference than grading. I might love a pencil despite a soft core or bad imprint, or I might hate one even though it's well made. I guess the point is that reviews are subjective. I grade the pencils based on my understanding of them, and present what I find in the videos. I then make my own judgement about the pencil, taking those thing AND my personal preferences into account. Some people will disagree with my results, and my methods, but the point is that I'm trying to be consistent. Every review should have the same components and criteria. That means viewers can disregard my thoughts and make their own decision, based on the data provided. I thought for a long time about how to make these reviews as unbiased as possible, but without a lab, this is as close as we can get. Thanks for the feedback though, you've got me thinking about the process and trying to improve, which is always welcome!
Wood & Graphite thanks for the help I really appreciate it. I truly enjoy your channel & content. You've got an amazing collection as well. I was wondering if you have any Field Notes that you'd be willing to sell by anychance? 🙏 Im working on building my collection and would love to add some from you if possible, maybe with an autograph too🙏 😊 you've inspired me in many ways. Thank you for the great content, I'm looking forward to future vids. Keep up the great work! 🙌🍻
Hello wood and graphite I am looking for one of the Black wing Pencil black one..it's very costly in India please tell me how can I buy the pencil with cheap shipping charges.. The shipping charges are going up to 30 dollars which is very expensive.
Join the Erasable Podcast Facebook group, there are loads of folks trading pencils all over the world. I'm sure there might be a few people willing to swap you (:
Pencils.com just sent me the first edition Palo that doesn't say Palomino. I know the second edition is the best. So, keep that in mind. You select, you don't get.
Along the same line, Fulltouch chalk is the best, so they say, chalk to use on chalkboards. Its so good that mathematicians are hoarding it. It too was discontinued by the Japanese company that made it for years. A S.Korean company has been producing it once they reversed engineered the the chalk. th-cam.com/video/PhNUjg9X4g8/w-d-xo.html
I don´t know why I find a channel dedicated exclusively to pencils so exciting. Thank you for doing this.
Great channel. I do wish he would toss us a new video every now and then. I keep watching them over and over and enjoy every time. So you're not alone.
I got a pack of blackwing 602 and blackwing palimino pencils for christmas!!! So happy! They really are incredible
+James 'o' Biscuits Spread the love and enjoy!
They are just a typical 3b pencil is it not?
YES….BLACKWING IS INCREDIBLE….I draw almost every single day….large drawings….I have many other brands however I find the whole line fabulous! 🖤
I'm only recently getting into the pencil world, making purchases of General's and Musgrave's pencils, and only today have I dared to approach the legend of the Blackwing. Seeing that it has such a terrific pedigree of usage, I may have to pick up a box.
Thanks for the review, own one, and love it....still torn with blackwing regular.
I looooove sharpening pencils that's why I don't like mechanical pencils or lead holders but I love that mini straight edge you have there
I became a volume subscription subscriber last year and will continue till they stop
So unfortunate that I live so far from places where one could buy the Blackwing pencils and Field Note notebooks. I know I can buy online, but shipping is crazy expensive...
So basically it's a 3b pencil, right?
Is this your highest rated pencil? Is it your all time favourite or are there others?
+James 'o' Biscuits Hard to say, I'm a big fan of the 602
I just bought the whole packet of those pencils and had no idea they were very popular lol
Appreciate this review and the great quality production. Subscribing.
Thanks Ray! Glad to have you onboard!
Good informative and quick review. Thank you so much.
I have the same sharpener but whenever I sharpen pencils it damages the pencil. Anyways to stop the damaging from happening?
What pencil would you recommend to an artist that often needs to erase completely?🤔
I've tried these ( 602) and didn't think they were worth all the hype and expensive price.
Don't get me wrong they ARE good pencils , but you can get a lot of good pencils cheaper.
They seem to be about 4B or so.
+ZENOIST2 Different strokes for different folks
Yes, the Mitsu-Bishi 9800 2B or 4B will perform equally well at a lower price.
Quick question. What is the brand of that sharpener, I absolutely love it and have seen something similar albeit not as good looking made by Mitsubishi.
+Aravind Vinayakan The sharpener is a "Classroom Friendly" and you can get one from www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com/
I think it might be a rebranded Dahle, but it's a superb sharpener!
+Wood & Graphite Thank you so very much! I will certainly look into purchasing one :D
Have you ever, or do you own an original Eberhard Faber?
I don't, and I've not actually used one. 2016 will be a year of new pencils to be sure!
EF Blackwings? they are rare and expensive as hell.
What straight edge do you use? Must grab one...
What sharpener do you use in the video? It gives a wonderful point that I haven't been able to get with any of mine.
+Mekas Artesian It's called a Classroom Friendly (:
Looks like a carl angel 5. I'm getting one of those
it's actually a grade B although they don't print that info in the pencil or in the box
Based on your own criteria, shouldn't it get a low rating? (poor point retention, smudging, not so great to erase)
+memm The rating system is subjective. If that was the case, only super dark, hard and smudgeless pencils would get good ratings (that's a ballpoint pen haha!)

+Wood & Graphite Thanks. I somehow misunderstood the How to Review Pencil video. I thought the rating is based on the tests you do with each pencil.
The rating is influenced by the tests, but not defined by it. If I rated pencils only by their test scores, I'd be telling people which pencils are best (EG Only soft but smudgy pencils are good)

Pencils.com just sent me the first edition Palo that doesn't say Palomino. I know the second edition is the best. So, keep that in mind. You select, you don't get.
Great review although for me it is a 10/10.
+iRoc-Z I'd love to rate it 10, but then there wouldn't be anywhere to improve!
What kind of eraser did you use?
+Peggy Bounyarith Black Muji eraser
Got em love em..
Had one, hated it, went back to Ticonderoga.

Also this is a friend of mine, very unique graphite objects that write! www.asbworkshop.com/home1.html
This is just a regular 2B or 3B pencil mixed up with lot of hype.
Yes, hyped!
over rated crap, get a 2b mutsubishi or tombow for ⅓ of the price of these pencils used by a bunch of nobodies
