Wonderful review. It convinced me to get a box of these wonderful pencils, along with the Palomino Blackwings (all 3 versions).

Really good review. I just ordered a box of these off Amazon at about 70 cents each. I have been using a 602 recently and I am very impressed. However, it is a little top heavy for my taste which of course will balance itself with repeated sharpenings. I am after a good writing pencil that I can keep very sharp without worrying about going through too many pricey pencils. Hopefully the 9850 will fit the bill. I have also really started to enjoy 2.0 mm lead holders of which the Kitaboshi is my favorite so far. It is made of cedar and smells wonderful. Fells like a nice wood pencil in my hands and operates more like a mechanical pencil than lead holder. The 1B lead that comes with it has a nice balance of tooth and liquidity. I like it for travel due to how small the OHTO sharpener is and less mess.

For such an expensive pencil, and an ingenious ferrule design, the Palomino erasers are absolute *hot garbage* - even the updated pink one. Got a box of these Mitsu-bishi pencils on the way arriving today. If they're anything as good as this video (and other reviewers) state, I'll be happy to call them my primary wood pencil.

Mitsubishi pencils in my opinion are just high quality. I love using them to draw. But for writing, I get the most pleasure with the balanced lead Blackwings. The erasers are okay. Don't really have an opinion on them other than being unique. :-)

You won't go wrong with either one of these pencils and but Mitsubishis are cheaper. The Blackwings are beautiful and smell divine. Its a tough call. But my money goes to the 9850 for the price and the fact that they write just as well as a Blackwing. Also the Mitsubishi has a far superior eraser. Similar to a Staedtler Mars plastic eraser. 9850 all the way. The Palomino Pearl is amazing for drawing though. I like my Palomino Pearls for sketching.

I've used the 9850 for a few years now and I'm totally sold on it. The only eraser that's better is the Sakura Sumo IMHO. I haven't used the 602 yet but I do own several Pearls and find them entirely too soft. Wish I would have bought the 602 instead. I guess the color of the Pearl is what swayed me. Thanks for the comparison. If they're that close in performance I'll stick with my 9850's. Mitsubishi also has the 9852 EW recycled which comes unpainted with a purplish colored ferrule and a black eraser that performs almost identically, it's just not as pretty as the maroon 9850.

Great video! I have one 9800 left from my first box of 12 and it's an astounding pencil for the money. I had a look at the price of Blackwings and I chose instead to buy a box of 12 Hi-Uni HB pencils, and I'm interested to see how they compare to my Japan-made HB Mono 100s, which are the best all-round graphite pencil I've ever used. My vintage Lumographs will probably get sold now as I much prefer the darkness and smoothness of Mitsubishi's sublime HB graphite (quite a bit darker even than a "B" Lumograph).

I have the Mitsu-bishi 9850, great writing experience. I am tempted to purchase a dozen of 602. Seems like from this review they are very similar, not sure if a purchase of $25 for the blackwings would be justified. To buy or not to buy? that is the question.

In person, Blackwings are very different to Mitsubishis. They are softer, smoother, darker, both the graphite and the lackuer and overall finish, feels much more premium + they also come with an eraser.

@@OShackHennessy Thanks I discovered an even smoother pencil thanks to a cool TH-camr (forgot the channel), it's called 100 Test Scoring by Mudgrave. I have both boxes and Test Scoring and Blackwing, I tend to just play with the Blackwing now coz's still the most stylish, most beautiful pencil but wished they'd buy Mudgrave pencil company and use their lead formula... but I use the also amazing 100 Test Scoring for writing (making Blackwing, esp. w/ the cool box a kind of just a cool display piece now).
Mudgrave accidentally trumped Blackwing and is now the smoothest writer, one will not go back to Blackwing, unless it's used as a fidget toy or display (fidgeting as well it's amazingly designed eraser)
100 Test Scoring is definitely one of the most hidden gems of all hidden gems in any industry or category- I actually imported it, costing a lot but it's really way cheaper when it's not imported, at student prices.
I emailed & recommended Blackwing to buy Mudgrave and use their lead and also upgrade Blackwing's for the 21st century its girth/width to 100 Test Scoring's width which is more ergonomic & feels better coz' I think based on the name, it's for long hours of marking things on test papers to help students ace a perfect 100 score.

What do you mean by “tonal quality”?

    • @RixCanDoit
      @RixCanDoit  ปีที่แล้ว

Refers to the overall visual characteristics of how light and dark areas are rendered on paper. It encompasses the range and distribution of different shades, tones, and values created by varying pressure and techniques when using pencils. Tonal quality is often used to convey depth, texture, and dimension in drawings, and it plays a significant role in achieving a realistic or expressive representation of the subject.

Pencil? I'd be happy with the 602 if I'm "writing a lot". I'd use the Pearl if I was doing small notes here and there. I'd use the Blackwing 'black' if having to color in test bubbles or drawing on the road. As for the mechanical pencils you listed, better is which one feels right to you.

Their only link to the original is the look, yet they market as if it's the same thing and upcharge for it. Mitsubishi is just like, it's a nice pencil among a million other pencils, then prices accordingly. It's like moleskine, over paying for "image".

Sin duda los Blacwing tienen un buen diseño y un muy buen grafito, la mayoría de los lápices de dibujo buenos no tienen borrador, así que los Blackwing hicieron un buen trabajo al agregarles un borrador.

I wonder how Bernie would feel about spending even one dollar for a pencil, which really is stupid when there are pencils with higher quality wood and lead for twenty-five cents per pencil?
