    This entire album was written in 5 days in the studio.
    The documentary on the making of "we like it here" is a must watch.

    Definitely watch "Something" by Snarky Puppy featuring Lalah Hathaway off the Family Dinner project. During the recording Lalah spontaneously does what some call her "polyphonic splitting" technique, where she sings more than one note/pitch simultaneously, AND then she was able to follow Cory Henry through the chord changes with this technique. It absolutelyy epic. And it won them a Grammy.

    A good interlude to break up the We Like It Here sessIon would be to watch ‘Something’ by Snarky Puppy and Lalah Hathaway.

    Yes yes yes, more snarky puppy. It makes my day seeing new reactions to snarky puppy. Definitely finish the we like it here videos, then go backwards to some of the earlier works. I would go with what about me next. Larnel and guitar get to show out. Then shofukan, outlier. Doesn't matter because this whole session is pure gold. Thanks for doing Snarky puppy again. Got my sub 🎉❤🎉❤

    Some additional info: those songs are mostly written by single musicians in Snarky Puppy. This one was written by Mike "Maz" Maher (trumpet), Lingus was written by Michael League (bass and band leader). The fact that all of those guys are not only insanely skilled musicians, but also incredible composers blows my mind every time!
    I'd also recommend "Trinity" from a different recording, written by guitarist Mark Lettieri. Feels like the jazz version of a James Bond villain theme song

  • @aditsu
    @aditsu 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    Oh, I hadn't actually seen/listened to this one, very cool!
    7:44 "show me something" - funny you should ask, they have a song called "Something" with Lalah Hathaway, what she did with her voice blew their minds and will probably blow yours too.
    But if you want more songs from this session, that's perfectly fine too 👍

    The instrument you described throughout the video, being played by Shaun Martin, is a "Talk Box" not a vocoder.
    The instrument used by Peter Frampton was a "Talk Box" not a vocoder. A "Talk Box" is simple; basically a speaker, tube and fan.
    A vocoder *samples* sound, and is very different, closer to a sampler and synthesiser.
    Best Wishes. ☮

    • @BCowcorn
      @BCowcorn 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That said, Shaun Martin does also plays vocoder, in other tracks. (Not sure if he does in We Like It Here, but I believe he does in some tracks on their latest album Empire Central - another Grammy winner by the way.)

    My favourite song from this session as I've said before, but only by a whisker! All are good.
    Thanks for the reaction, made my Saturday :)
    Next to Cory Henry, Shaun Martin is kinda a Sleeper, but I think he just kills it here, I feel all the emotions, and the song structure is amazing with the cutoff to just the Rhodes(?) organ like the intro. Shaun has fun with this section live, he gets into it with the audience and the organ part here can go on for a long time before he starts his solo over it. Worth watching some at some point even if not a reaction to them 🙂
    Speaking of the organist....you've seen him open Lingus, and Sleeper, so when you get to Shofukan, please note that he is the horn soloist on this one (yeah...I know)
    Interestingly, Sleeper was written by Mike "Maz” Maher the lead horn player. And when you get to Trinity (a must, but for later) make sure to note that it is credited to Mark Lettieri the lead guitarist. Such a depth of talent with these guys, I know you'll love them all.
    What About Me from this session - depending on the version you see, you may see Shaun Martin go tip Larnell at the end. I think the story is that they had been rehearsing this before Larnell could arrive, and it hadn't come together at all, didn't feel right, all that stuff, and Larnell pulled it into a great song, and Shaun is publically thanking him for that.
    I also love Outlier from this session, such an inventive sax solo.
    Anyway, see you at the next one, love your reactions, feel free to add as much insight from your own knowledge and playing, that's what we are here for as well as just being here for your first listen etc
    thanks from across the pond ;)

      You’re talking about Justin Stanton, he’s playing a Fender Rhodes (and yes he’s also a trumpeter) which is not an organ, it’s an electric piano. Cory Henry played B3 organ parts throughout this session (shown for example at the at the end of Lingus)

    This is as good as session as any, but their "Family Dinner" sessions, 1 & 2, are fantastic, as is the latest "Empire Central". That latest one they actually use 3 of their kit players and several auxiliary percussionists. Beast of a session. As for Shaun Martin, I saw hime in a small club in my hometown, just a month after seeing him with Snarky Puppy. Brilliant musician. Besides the Grammys with Snarky, he has 4 Grammys of his own for Gospel Albums. My favorite performance of "Sleeper" is off of Snarky's "Live From Albert Hall" album. That album was Snarky's first Grammy.

      yeah in What About Me, at least on one of the performances, Shaun Martin tips Larnell to say thankyou for bringing the song together once he arrived in Utrecht... so likely that first performance on the evening of the day Larnell arrived. I think also the look on Cory's face during the solo is a priceless musician-to-musician gift
