Wonderful, wonderful singing. The kind of singing that would take opera by storm after all the frauds of the last 10-15 years. In this wonderful aria she reminded me of Zinka Milanov.
Your sincere tribute is deserved. La Dimitova's voice is without comparison. Calling her voice provincial is poor judgement committed on purpose. The emotional impact of her dramatic voice is grounded in a flawless technique. Huge voices are not well understood.
She was the only true dramatic on the international scene during her time in the 80s and 90s. Perhaps there were a few still around in the 1970s, but this voice type is simply not found. It's not that they don't exist, but that opera is competing with other music forms and children are not being exposed to opera. Also, if they do discover opera, there aren't the teachers to help them develop.
I have a photo with her wearing the same outfit, after her Turandot in Pasadena, 1994. A beautiful, sensitive performance, from what I think was her best year!
Joseph Buhler Joseph they cannot appreciate this great voice why bother hello goodbye. I'm 67 years old I've heard the best and she is one of the greatest dramatic Sopranos better than Eva Marton. She struggled with her top voice. Dimitrova had incredible breath control. She owned Turandot. Eva Marton struggled with the HI C when she sang In Questa Regia Etc. Your comment was interesting and true thank you my friend. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
I could never forgive those international recording companies that specialize in classical music during Dimitrova's active years. What they did is a crime: totally shunning her, thereby robbing her of a possible bigger stardom.
mannail888 I absolutely agree. She came to Covent Garden and the Metropolitan Opera late in her career. It was simply pure politics xcetera they hated the fact that she had an incredible instrument and had no equal in her prime. Arnold Bourbon Amaral
The quality of the recording is just awful with a terrible buzz that gets worse when she sings forte. Still added to my favorites because this is such a magnificent performance. Tebaldi at San Carlo in 1953 still sets the bar for this piece, but GD is awesome.
Great singing, but her voice is so dark and heavy on the bottom she can scarcely be described as a soprano at this stage of her career. There's dramatic soprano, and then there's whatever she is here!
I would simply suggest that you read the rest of the comments. A solid lower register in addition to rhe glorious, authentic, dramatic soprano is an asset, not a liability.
She started out as a mezzo-soprano before it was discovered her voice could encompass the higher range of a dramatic soprano. In the 1980s, she developed this voluminous lower middle voice that distinguished her from other sopranos. Her voice doesn't sound quite so heavy and dark in recordings from the 1970s where she tended to sound more like a traditional soprano.
Very aggressive start, cold in the aria.. You really need to listen others to hear, that this aria is NOT an aggression... it is a pain, and LOTS of emotions. I heard here nothing, but just going through the notes. Ok, yes, she has a big voice, so are others.... but her singing here is nothing more, than just an average graduate of a good American opera school, at the age of 25.
Your comments are not valid! We should be so lucky as to hear. 2 or 3 voices like Ghena's in our lifetime! A 25 year old could NEVER sing yhis aria with the poer and emotion of a 50 year old Diva! A voice that Renata Tebaldi called a force of nature!
Одна з найкрвщих !
Поцілована Богом !
There are no words to describe this woman and this sound. All one can do is just experience it. Glorious.
The recoded sound is not good at all - the singing is superb.
Wonderful, wonderful singing. The kind of singing that would take opera by storm after all the frauds of the last 10-15 years. In this wonderful aria she reminded me of Zinka Milanov.
She definitely had one of the biggest voices I have heard on the opera stage!
More than great , her force her strength ooo gosh
Ghena Dimitrova - the best of the best - she was a true artist with devotion to the art - nothing like that anymore - BRAVISSIMA !!!!
For me the most powerful interpretation of this aria !!! She is one of the greatest opera singer ever born!! La Diva Gena Dimitrova
Красу голосу і красу почуттів, що виражає цей голос не може зіпсувати навіть неякісний запис.
La manera en que maneja el gran caudal de su voz es increíble!!... BRAVA!!!

I LOVE THE POWER IN HER VOICE!
I think this is the very best rendition of this perilous air on TH-cam!!! Immense artist and singer. No words.
Majestic & Magnificent - the greatest!!! A Tragic loss!
Absolutely GORGEOUS.. and the kind of voice that the opera needs!
Oh my God oh my God oh my God!
Prekrasno! Brava Ghena!

In the early '90s Dimitrova herself said in an interview about the dramatic voices: "Look, there is Eva Marton and me..."
Да си спомним за ВЕЛИКАТА ГЕНА ДИМИТРОВА....!

OMG! Bravo!
Se non sbaglio Ghena venne poco considerata dagli Americani.
Beh, quale complimento migliore di questo? 😁

che fastidio l'intermittenza dei microfoni! GRANDE!
Your nickname (without the "j") reminds me of the name from a small town in Puerto Rico called Aibonito.

@@jaibonito She's one of my favorities, I'm not actually criticizing her.
