It's not the worst of the bad. It's just really meh. 0s or Not Goods are aggravatingly bad. Katy just stayed in her lane and turned out stale. The reception is exacerbated by her coordination with questionable figure (tm).
Katy Perry fundamentally captures “cringe millennial” energy that was considered quirky and endearing 10-15 years ago that just comes across as tired and embarrassing now. I think it’s clear that she really was just a product of the time, and not the pop chameleon with her finger on the pulse of culture that maybe we expected from someone with as many hits that she had.
Never expected that. Anything she did after "I kissed a girl" felt like a labiratory created, sterile and heartless. It could be enjoyable from time to time but just like a fluke.
@@sathrielsatanson666California Girls, Teenage Dream, and Firework are legitimately fantastic songs. I wouldn’t necessarily call them soulless, but I kind of see your point.
Katy really shot herself in the foot by working with Dr Luke again. People would forgive it being a bad album if she hadn't worked with him, and they'd probably forgive her working with him if the album had been good. Instead, she's ruined her, already shaky, reputation by making a bad album with a horrible person
Her working with him appears to be an attempt to get some kind of mainstream success again (hence running back to the producer of her biggest hits) which makes this album feel even more soulless😒.
Then doubling down in the face of criticism by making it unequivocally clear she WANTED to work with him, and have this abuser write lyrics on an album themed around woman's empowerment and experience
I don't think that has anything to do with it. Kim Petras worked with him and she seems to be liked. Also this is Katy's third bomb in a row. Comebacks are extremely rare in the music business so she's probably never going to score a big hit again.
@balldalt that's what I'm saying. People like Kim Petras' music, so they look past the fact that she works with him. If this album was good, it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but it was bad to begin with, so people are going to see the fact that she's working with Dr luke as more of a negative. The album was never going to be as big as her previous albums because of the previous flops, but the fact that she worked with Dr Luke and produced a terrible album did more to cement that legacy. If the album was exactly the same but with a different producer, it would just be another flop, but this is a flop and a bad moral judgment

As someone who composes music, creating happy and uplifting songs that don't come off as cheesy or childish is quite a difficult task, unlike melancholic songs that flow when we're sad and are naturally taken more seriously. I'm saying this because Katy Perry's 'brand' has always been that of the uplifting artist, the one whose songs motivate you-radio hits that appeal to everyone from kids to older adults. She marked my teenage years with viral songs like 'California Gurls' and 'Firework,' and it's sad to see her creative process decline. ❌ It's even more disappointing when we look back and see that the 'Witness' and 'Smile' eras, despite being controversial, delivered quality in some tracks. Some people say she has been facing a boycott since the 'Witness' era due to her political stances, and I don’t doubt it - the music industry has a poor track record of relationships between producers, managers and artists. I read in a comment above that her career is starting to resemble the mess that is Jennifer Lopez’s music career. I agree, but I think it’s even worse because J.Lo has the advantage of her 'mi gente' Latino background- being a girl from the Bronx who is deeply connected to her Latin roots (or at least tries to be)-and she has never focused on producing high-quality music. In conclusion, while I feel sad about it, I don’t sympathize. She has a lot of money and had plenty of time to deliver the best pop dance album of 2024. She has far more resources than the girls of the new generation, like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter. If she hasn't made a good album, it's because she didn't want to or has accepted that she’s not a great professional in her only occupation. The highlights of the album (for me, but I see that others who listened to it are saying the same thing) are the beat of the song 'Gimme Gimme' and the verse by rapper JID-and rap isn't even in my top three favorite genres. Bad attempt, Katy, and good luck with your next album.
I wouldn’t have been nearly as disappointed if she had dropped something with the quality of Smile; it definitely had its moments. But this album right here sounds like she didn’t even try.
The second to last paragraph: that's it. And I do wonder, how even dr shit didn't realize this album was so much less than mid? Katy really doesn't care about her music, she just wants the status back as much as it might cost her. And well... it did cost her everything. I hope she is finally happy now
@@thrownstair "she eat your heart out... Like Jeffrey Dahmer". Dark Horse is iconic. Roar and Part of Me are where the wheels started to come off I feel.
I heard Woman's World on the radio at work a grand total of one time ever since it was released, and no other singles, and we listen to mainstream stations with like 60 songs on a playlist that each play at least once to twice a day. I think it's time for her to start flipping burgers bro
@@kevinhansen9258yeah I wasted roughly 30 seconds coming to that same conclusion, I thought for sure bro was cooking for a second. But nah I was mistaken.
This is EASILY one of the worst pop albums this year. As a long-time Katy fan, I was disappointed with how bland the production was & how cringe some of the lyrics work. Even Harleys in Hawaii alone from Smile is better than 143. If I had to pick a decent song, it was the JID song. Strong 2/Light 3 for me.
Honestly, 2/10 is better than I was expecting. Hope Katy Perry gets back on track and reflects on what made this album a failure. From the uninspired songwriting to joining up with very(very!) questionable producers. This is all just too sad & disappointing for someone who used to have so much popularity.
@@homerjunior3953 yeah, I think she just wants to do different genres of pop, but she needs to do actual different genres, pop its just not the best type of music for her. Atleast she said that her next album will be acoustic, i hope so
It didnt even manage to be memorably terrible (as an album, ignoring all the controversies surrounding it), its just completely soulless. I would've thought this was boring in 2013, much less 2024
katy perry is missing the key ingredient in the current pop wave-extremely personal, specific, and vulnerable pop music. charli, chappell, and sabrina all have such distinct writing and lyrical styles and katy just sounds like a boardroom of writers
Ya. It’s called don’t work with Dr Luke and don’t half a** anything. Especially when nobody wanted a Katy Perry record right now, she should’ve brought the thunder but she didn’t. She could’ve worked with ANYBODY but chose Dr Luke and it blew up in her face. She could’ve worked with up and coming SoundCloud producers who made tracks better than this whole album.
As a fan, this album really buried her career for me. Even in her darkest flop albums you can still hear Katy's intentions and appreciate the effort with a smile. This record feels nothing like that, not like Katy's biggest achievements nor her worst work, it feels like nothing.
I read a tweet that said Katy was purposefully making the worst album of 2024 to make Dr Luke a critical and commercial failure…let’s assume that’s the truth!
Lady Gaga always took her music and art seriously even when critics flamed her for doing so. Thats why people still respect gaga she never made of her career a circus and a money grab. Joanne was a slump for gaga but rhat album made people see that she was actually talented and that she could be even more deep with her intentions. Thats how lady gaga survived the millenial cringe, tapping deeper into her artistry. Katy has never taken herself too seriously and her music just sounds like that. Sabrina Carpenter is an unserious singer but somehow she is very serious about her artistry and music. Sabrina is who Katy perry should watch and take notes of.
@@OYJluv I strongly agree about Sabrina! She's a silly, playful and overall kinda generic pop artist but her works still give the impression that they have a sense of intention both in sound and persona
I'd argue early PC Music scene ie: Sophie, GFOTY etc. in tandem deconstructed club, and neoperreo set this wave off, as alternative pop now is just the underground from the mid-2010s as the queer to white woman ally pipeline continues. But ya Carly Rae Jepson is based, Id say her and Rebecca Black were more a swan song for the era of that sound.
Chapple Roan and Charlie XCX have moved the pop landscape forward. With this kind of lame duck pop music, she simply can't compete. Also in Katy Perry's absence the void has been filled with the likes of Sabrina Carpenter and Dua Lipa. Her hubris to work with Dr. Luke, especially after the whole Keisha debacle, was the final nail in the coffin. I think her days as a powerhouse top 40 performer may be over, especially given how radio refuses to support artists that cross over into their forties are seen as has beens.
I feel like people are overlooking Hozier in terms of this year’s music. His album came out last year (so did Chappell’s) but he got his first number one after almost a decade in the business. His music has been KILLER!!!
this new album and also the previous ones really sadden me. I mean, it's Katy Perry, she's been in a long time relationship, she is a mother, she was once one of the biggest names in the industry, she has faced several ups and downs. She'd have so many things to talk about in her music, so much potential for great music. Yet nothing she releases really reflects that. I remember really liking "Chained to the Rythm" and her intention to make "purposeful pop", but the next song she released back than was "Bon Appetit" and it was like ok so she herself is still chained to said rythm ...
Thing is Katy's music has kind of always sounded like this. There has never really been much depth to any of her songs. The times have simply changed and people aren't into that kind of sound if it's anything current. It's nostalgic to listen to this sort of music when we listen to the old hits and her old albums but her still doing it now gets rid of that nostalgic feeling and simply feels soulless and boring. There is nothing new and interesting about this album so it makes it forgettable and like it's been released 10 years too late.
Oh is to so have you listened to witness, do not post lengthy think pieces without knowing anything in detail. Go listen to her song by the grace of god, save as draft and miss you more you will know how much "substance" she puts into her music.
This album genuinely shocks me. I figured she had learned a LOT from her “Witness” era, so when more “purposeful pop” manifested with the debut of “Woman’s World,” I was gobsmacked (and yes I know she said it’s satirical but like… that isn’t entirely clear, so it sort of fails as satire). Katy Perry has now made three flops in a row, so I’m thinking she’s probably done now. She’ll probably just continue her career as a “media personality,” judging singing competitions and such, and doing the occasional feature. Maybe The Voice has an opening? 😅
I genuinely think a 2 is too high. Like nothing feels like she means anything or cares about anything. The tracks are so boring, which is wild cause even I love people like Ava Max. Shes making an almost pro women type album with an abuser as a lead producer. I give this album a 0 with the only pos8tive being Jid
Think about it. The cover is Katy Perry coming out of a portal, the album is called 143, months would put us in 2013. Tinfoil hat theory is that this was written in 2013, but there was too much Katy Perry in the pop mainstream at the time, so they shelved it for a while.
This reality never ceases to disappoint and surprise. Katy Perry is a shell of her former self and her ex, russel brand, is now a born again christian cozying up to tucker carlson.
i think its really interesting that pop is now being led by newer faces/lesser known artists - its been such a striking shift of newer artists taking up the main stage of pop while major pop musicians from the 2010s/early 2020s (taylor swift, camilla cabello, katy perry) are missing the mark this year by creating artificial and apathetic music. are they bored or just uninspired? it seems like many big names have given up on pursuing artistic merit or met creative fatigue (beyonce is an exception) but still released music for money.
i've been waiting for this lmao, three consecutive flop albums she went from a vibrant chart topping superstar from early to mid 2010s to a struggling charmless self claimed self empowering woman singer
Are you serious ? Shame on you.... I think it's more like 341 in the ranking for this album. 143 that's way too much for this trash ! You're too nice man.
If you listen to her Call Her Daddy interview, she talks about her self-help journey, her time at a Hoffman Process retreat, and motherhood which I think all fueled the album's theme of a powerful, healing love but it's unfortunate that she didnt execute a more unique and interesting point of view wirh the lyrics and production
Listened to this album and, even though I think “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes” are garbage singles, I didn’t hate the album as a whole. I honestly kind of dug how each song led into one another. I do agree that the lyrics are kind of vapid, but I at least feel like all of these songs belong on the same album, unlike with “Smile”. I guess I must be a part of the group willing to give objectively subpar projects a pass. 😅
I've never gotten the impression that Katy is in control of anything. I've always assumed that her label had assigned her all the best people but over the years she's been bumped down the list of importance and so mid-tier people resulted in mid-tier records.

The actual rollout wasn’t bad at all. She’s present and the promo is there. Just the actual music sucks , like the marketing is much better than the product

It's even more disappointing when we look back and see that the 'Witness' and 'Smile' eras, despite being controversial, delivered quality in some tracks.
Bad attempt, Katy, and good luck with your next album.
the fact you have this in paragraph format makes it look copypasta but I appreciate the take.
I wouldn’t have been nearly as disappointed if she had dropped something with the quality of Smile; it definitely had its moments. But this album right here sounds like she didn’t even try.
@@jadesded hahaha, I just need space to have a pleasant reading
I enjoyed reading!
The second to last paragraph: that's it. And I do wonder, how even dr shit didn't realize this album was so much less than mid? Katy really doesn't care about her music, she just wants the status back as much as it might cost her. And well... it did cost her everything. I hope she is finally happy now
The fact that he thinks roar is still a good song is nice for me because it reminds me of how he can be totally wrong sometimes

Kinda crazy that Mr. Fantano is more positive on this album than I am.
This album and everything surrounding it is a textbook example of Murphy's Law: Everything that could've gone wrong went horribly wrong and then some.

Katy Perry has such a beautiful voice, a stripped-down more reflective ballad-heavy album would have been so amazing.

The first album to receive a 143, congratulations Katy xcx!
Kind of crazy that you gave it a 10 and then started dancing and then said it was better than anything Kendrick Lamar’s ever done

Katy really needs to take notes from Lady Gaga on how to rejuvenate her career and stat respected.
She isn't anywhere near as talented as gaga though

For real. Gaga has maybe a 50% hit rate on albums but she's never ever ever phoning it in
Seems like this alternative pop renaissance started with Carly Rae Jepsen’s Emotion in 2015
I'd argue early PC Music scene ie: Sophie, GFOTY etc. in tandem deconstructed club, and neoperreo set this wave off, as alternative pop now is just the underground from the mid-2010s as the queer to white woman ally pipeline continues. But ya Carly Rae Jepson is based, Id say her and Rebecca Black were more a swan song for the era of that sound.
Runaway With Me is such a masterpiece
Few people notice that
The glaze never ends
Fun fact, Carly Rae Jepsen just got engaged.
Her song „Crush“ was actually written by AI according to my AI detector 💀💀
Chapple Roan and Charlie XCX have moved the pop landscape forward. With this kind of lame duck pop music, she simply can't compete. Also in Katy Perry's absence the void has been filled with the likes of Sabrina Carpenter and Dua Lipa. Her hubris to work with Dr. Luke, especially after the whole Keisha debacle, was the final nail in the coffin. I think her days as a powerhouse top 40 performer may be over, especially given how radio refuses to support artists that cross over into their forties are seen as has beens.
She should’ve named her album:
4-3+1

Katy named the album 143 because that's the number of streams it got after a week

I feel like people are overlooking Hozier in terms of this year’s music. His album came out last year (so did Chappell’s) but he got his first number one after almost a decade in the business. His music has been KILLER!!!
my biggest problem with the album is the lyricism.
this new album and also the previous ones really sadden me.
Man, what's with JID giving features to trash albums this year? lol
He's getting his money, can't blame him. I prefer it this way than him putting mediocre pop acts on his albums
JID has been on the up and up for nearly a decade now. Dude doesn’t need to prove himself anymore. He just needs to collect that well deserved cash.
Cash grab duck it and still giving as solid ft and tryna give a high level verse
This getting the same score as Ultraviolence is quite wild

Think about it. The cover is Katy Perry coming out of a portal, the album is called 143, months would put us in 2013. Tinfoil hat theory is that this was written in 2013, but there was too much Katy Perry in the pop mainstream at the time, so they shelved it for a while.

i think its really interesting that pop is now being led by newer faces/lesser known artists - its been such a striking shift of newer artists taking up the main stage of pop while major pop musicians from the 2010s/early 2020s (taylor swift, camilla cabello, katy perry) are missing the mark this year by creating artificial and apathetic music. are they bored or just uninspired? it seems like many big names have given up on pursuing artistic merit or met creative fatigue (beyonce is an exception) but still released music for money.

This is sad. Only because my company spent a good amount of money trying to market her with our new earbuds, and her album sucks and it flopped.
God this makes such perfect sense and explains so much
Listened to this album and, even though I think “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes” are garbage singles, I didn’t hate the album as a whole.
