... There are singers who are good! Then there are singers who are very good! ...And then there is ELVIS, the FIRST and BEST singer of all time!! ...His charisma is still unsurpassed today! ...A singer for ETERNITY!! ✨💎✨🕺🏻🕯
What I love about this version is how different it is to the 1970 Vegas version. Equally good, just different. A little shorter, a little faster, but that bass solo - and Elvis' reaction to it - are worth the price alone.
@@ppresley9208 I have been a fan for as long as I can remember-I am 58 years old. My mom saw him perform in 1956, my mom and dad (who was a big fan, too) 1974, and I saw him in 1976. Did you see him in concert, or ever get to meet him?
@@clboelcke Greetings ! No, I never got to see him in person, much to my sorrow ... was able to see Tom Jones 14 times in concert , however . *ELVIS WON A GOLDEN GLOBE FOR HIS ( EOT ) ELVIS ON TOUR DOCUMENTARY IN 1973* THIS IS PART OF IT - I LOVE HOW THEY DID THE 3 SCREENS WITH THIS -- THANKS YA'LL ---
Love Polk Slad Annie - The bass player is Jerry Scheff, and outstanding musician played with Elvis from 1969 to 1977. Elvis was surrounded by the best musicians and rightly so and he paid top dollar for them. The musicians included, The Sweet Inspirations the all girl back up singers, J.D Sumner and the Stamps Quartet were his male back up singers, Katie Westmorland singing soprano. then the TCB band of James Burton lead guitar, Rhythm guitar John Wilkinson, Bass guitar Jerry Scheff, Drums Ronnie Tutt, Piano Glen Harden, Male harmony singer Charlie Hodge, Conductor Joe Guercio and the Joe Guercio orchestra consisting of on average 26 musicians. He would also have others on stage later in the 70s and he paid for all that out of his takings at each concert to bring and incredible sound to the fans. Lovely reaction.
Elvis surrounded himself with great talent. They were also his friends he appreciated them . They all spent a lot of time together off stage as well. Elvis never had a problem sharing the spotlight. ❤❤❤❤❤RIP
Who does this today in music ...... Nobody !!!!!! Love love Elvis. Thanks Matt & a different rendition than in 1970 Vegas Polk Salad Anne but still classic EP.
Great reaction guys to a version that gets overlooked due to the popularity of the Vegas 1970 version, and brilliant as that version is, this performance is top rate.
Glad you mentioned this being overlooked. Have you seen the performance from this concert when he threw the water over at Glen -- a powerhouse, fun performance. He did some amazing stuff at that Hampton Roads concert.
Jim Morrison went to see Elvis in Vegas, ,he was moved by bass player JERRY SCHEFF (see above video) that he asked Jerry to play on an up coming DOORS Album.
Quite a difference from the '70 Vegas performance. This piece is from the concert he did in Hampton Roads, Virginia, the full concert from the moment he walked up those steps onto the stage, to the close of the show, is probably still available & has some amazing stuff.
Elvis and the guys on stage could still rock as good as anyone.... imagine bringing together 2 backing singer groups, his TCB band and a full orchestra to create that magic 🔥
At minimum, there was always at every show from 1972 on: JD Sumner and the Stamps quartet (5), the Sweet Inspirations (3) Kathy Westmoreland the soprano (1), so 9 backup vocalists. 10 if you count Charlie Hodge adding some harmonies. Starting in 1974 for a couple of years he added Voice, another male vocal group on stage but that didn't last very long. Then you had James Burton (lead guitar), John Wilkenson (Rhythm guiar), Ronnie Tutt (drums), Jerry Scheff (bass), Glenn D. Hardin (piano), so that's 5 in the core rhythm section, plus an orchestra of varying sizes, anywhere from 30 - 40 peices I'd guess. When they stayed long enough in one place for Vegas runs, they'd have strings and a more filled out orchestra, but on the road, it would usually just be a brass section of trumpets, saxes and trombones. So 20 core members always there and depending on the size of the orchestra could be as many as 60 people on stage. The Aloha from Hawaii concert would be an example of a full orchestra since they knew that was going out live and being filmed for posterity.
I was lucky to see James and Jerry supporting John Denver once. And remember that most of Elvis's rock backing band were co-curremtly supporting EmmyLou Harris as members of the Hot Band at the same time as playing for Elvis.
Bassist is Jerry Scheff. Jerry also played some with The Doors, most notably on Riders of the Storm and L.A. Woman. His son Jason took Peter Cetera's with Chicago place for a year or two when Peter left for a solo career.
50 was the most he had on stage but usually from 30 to 50. The Largest outfit ever. I have never seen that many with any one else. Most others have about 7 to 10. Thank you, thank you Very Much!!!!
He actually did a pretty decent version of this song in the last year or so of his life. The music in that version is a little harder driving. He typically had a drummer (Ronnie Tutt), lead guitar (James Burton), rhythm guitar (John Wilkinson), another acoustic guitar (his friend Charlie Hodge, who also gave him scarves and water and sang harmony with him), piano (usually Glen D. Hardin), electric clavinet, 4 or 5 female singers (Sweet Inspirations plus a soprano, Kathy Westmoreland, and Millie Kirkham before her), 4 or 5 male singers (first the Imperials Quartet then The Stamps Quartet plus another bass at times, and that was Richard Sterban who was later with the Oak Ridge Boys), and finally an orchestra conducted by Joe Guercio, and also occasionally strings. Elvis played a few stadiums, but he didn’t like the sound, and played mostly arenas. I was fortunate enough to see him on 05/20/1977.
Jerry Scheff was Elvis' bass player for that show - a premier bassist who also was a session player for a ton of artists. His song went on to also become a renowned bass player in his own regard
Wow, haven't seen this video before.😮just the one with him in a white suit just like this one. Elvis incorporated karate moves, and army moves😂to direct his band😂❤
That Bass player ..... Well his name is Jerry Shift ...... And yes Elvis loved his people ...... Elvis said lots of times of his band and back-up singers ....... {They are the best I'll tell you that for sure } ....... No Brag ..... Just Fact ......
Elvis's bass player here was Jerry Schiff Who was one of the better bass players during this time...Jerry's son Jason Schiff was the bass player and eventually the lead singer of the group Chicago after Peter Cetera left... Great reaction ,guys... See you on the next one...Keep being awesome !!!...
Funk Elvis - prefer this to the Vegas 1970 version. And that's the beauty of Elvis, would arrange songs completely differently, yet fantastic. Probably the most underated producer / arranger of music ever.
I dont know how many band members were actually on stage, but there were at least 15 back up slingers, a complete orchestra (lead by Joe Guercia) and then his band. So it must have been a full, full stage..... Hahahahha
The 1970 concert in Las Vegas is better. The first part of the song is not in this video. He tells a story. Elvis still doing fine though. He sounds and looks great! 🎸💃 nice reaction folks.

Tony Joe White: Back in Corpus Christi, I was doing a lot of Elvis on stage. I had my hair combed like Elvis. A big wave. I could sing him, copy him to a T. After 'Polk' came out and I was living in Memphis again, Elvis' producer called me. He said, 'We're flying a jet down to pick you and your wife up. We want you to come to Las Vegas and watch Elvis record 'Polk Salad Annie' for six nights, every night he does it on stage'. Every night in Las Vegas was so wild. Elvis was putting out. He said, 'You know, I feel like I wrote 'Polk Salad Annie'. I can sing it'. I said, 'That's for sure'. We went back to the dressing room after the show each night. He had an acoustic guitar back there. He'd say, 'Break me out a blues lick, man. Show me two or three licks I can do'. And I did him a John Lee Hooker or a Lightnin' Hopkins thing. I saw him later back down at Stax in Memphis, when he did 'I've Got a Thing About You Baby' and 'For Ol' Times Sake'. I always wanted somehow do something in respect for him. I finally got to do it on this blues album I just did. 'Heartbreak Hotel,' but I do it bluesy style. Because, when he sang, he had a lot of blues in it. Felton Jarvis, his producer, told me after Elvis had passed on, 'We was getting ready to nail 'Rainy Night'. I said, 'In that limo, sure sounds like he was fixing to nail it'. Referring to the scene in the Elvis concert documentary 'Elvis On Tour. Elvis can be seen in the back seat of a limo singing pieces of it.
