- Paul & Jo had the privilege of exploring this beautiful country, as part of the support crew on a Classic Car Rally led by Bruno Leunen of Destination Rally. We were supported by the Local Sri Lankan Ground Agent, Authenticities, who had a major role to play in the logistics of the event and it was done in the most memorable way.
Sri Lanka is so much more than just a beautiful country with wonderful people and delicious food. It is a feeling - a feeling that is indelibly imprinted on our hearts and a place we can't wait to return to. There is so much variety in terms of landscape, breathtaking vistas and diverse cultures all blended together from the tapestry of their past which is rich in incredible history and the home of multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The highlight for us was undoubtedly the people!! They have warm open hearts - everyone is smiling from the customs officials when you enter Colombo airport to the tea pluckers, basket weavers, fishermen and everyone in between and of course the people working in the hospitality industry really made us feel so welcome.
In spite of language barriers in some areas, their smiles said so much more which dissolved the barriers immediately as the warmth in their hearts and eyes spoke volumes - even the traditional tribesmen we met from the forest. Everyone made us feel at home.
The Sri Lankans have such resilience borne out of the adversities the country has had to endure and most of all their can-do/make a plan attitude which is inspiring. There is a wonderful feeling of community and everyone is making a contribution to their country in some small or big way and everyone is proud of their craft.
It was the first time a Classic Car Rally had been hosted in Sri Lanka and it was such a hit that it will be repeated again in 2025.
The teamwork between Destination-Rally and Authenticities, was an example of how teamwork makes the dream work - dynamic, productive, cohesive and fun - like a family.

Nice, and most notably, an IMPORTANT video that tells the truth about SRI LANKA: 'there was a lot of bad praise...but, none of that was true'.
I also like the way the 'rhythm' of the country was presented comparing with the rhythms of neighbouring countries. The editor has done well to keep the colours of the video graded to a level that match with the classic car era, I guess. All in all, nice work. All the best!

Very interesting. What would you consider an average cost, for a trip like this?
We have both done frills /no-frills road trips in the USA and semi all-inclusive with our own vehicle trips through Mexico, upto BMW/Mercedes car included European trips that were 10-14 days.

Appreciate your thoughts & impressions of the country. Personally, I would have reservations visiting the place considering the Rajapaksa family & their cronies have run the place into the ground whilst amassing great wealth for themselves. Not to mention one of them being an alleged war criminal. Of course the country as a whole has suffered because of this. Hard to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing.
Just visit and enjoy the island. Peoples livelihoods depend on Tourism
Just come and enjoy.I am a Sri Lankan born Canadian and I believe Sri Lanka is one of the best kept secrets.We know corrupt politicians are everywhere in the world..The country has so much to offer an the hospitality and warm hearts of Sri Lankans will delight you.

Dear Mr. Doodle, yes there is corruption in the country as in many other countries but the megascale corruption is totally a fabricated lie for political advantages. Some say that Rajapakshas sent money to Uganda. But the truth is that there is a world-famous money-printing foreign company in Sri Lanka. They had the order to print Ugandan currency. This had been transferred by air to Uganda by the company. So the political enemies twisted this issue to say that Rajapakshas sent dollars to Uganda. The truth is that the printing company sent Ugandan currency not dollars. Some say that Rajapaksa has 18 BILLION US$. The truth is the value of foreign loans for long-term projects by the Rajapaksha government from 2005-2014 is less than 8 Billion US$. If someone wants to steal money, they have to do it from capital expenditures for large-scale projects. No one can steal from the recurrent expenditures.
The truth is that then-President Rajapaksa did not have at least a house in Colombo. After his defeat in 2015, he went from person to person to get a rented house. Some people offered some properties but then the government (from 2015 to 2019) forced those owners to stop such deals.
The economic issue is decade long structural issue of the monetary and fiscal policy of the country. Sri Lanka imports two times the earnings from exports. There is a huge trade deficit from 1977. Then the is a budget deficit every year. Since 1977, these two forms of deficits were managed with foreign remittances, earnings from tourism, and local and foreign loans.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism earnings become zero, and foreign remittances by Sri Lankan workers in foreign countries reduced significantly from 700 MILLION to 200 Million US$. Thus, there was an issue in managing the two types of deficits. Sri Lanka had come to a level where there were no more foreign loans due to the debt unsustainability. On the other hand, due to the pandemic, as many other Central Banks did in other countries, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka also had to print money on a large scale to run the economy and provide some support to downtrodden people battered by the pandemic. This resulted in huge inflation.
The final point is that if our country's people believe in a politically fabricated lie to reason the causes of the economic issue we may not be able to solve this issue because we do not look at the real issues to address and correct them.
This explanation is made not to cleanse anyone but to solve the country's economic problem because we want to avoid knowingly being deceived by a politically fabricated lie. We want to analyze the real economic problems and solve this crisis while removing the terrible virus of social hatred that is generated through the socialization of this lie. This vrus should be eradicated because it can destroy peace and harmony of the country. We also want to prevent the country from going further into the abyss.
We focussed on the bigger picture of the country and its soulful people who should not suffer for the rest and we enjoyed it.
