Tradition and Precision: "Le Capuchadou" by Fontenille Pataud (Collection Highlight!)

- A must-see highlight of my knife collection!
The Thiers-based cutlery company Fontenille Pataud exists since the 1920s and has been known for quality cutlery throughout Europe, but when Gilles Steinberg bought the company in 1994 he gave it a completely new direction.
Mastermind and master craftsman Gilles Steinberg decided to return to the artisan methods of knife making. Today the company is known for its high-quality Laguiole knives. However, the craftsman and craftswomen at Fontenille Pataud do not only respect the tradition and the craft, they also introduced many innovations. For example, they offer Laguiole knives with a locking blade. Gilles Steinberg also came up with a very modern interpretation of the "Le Thiers" knife.

Fontenille Pataud set up an extra website for "Le Capuchadou":

• Video (short version)

These knife videos are better than anything on television. Beautifully made .
I finally ordered one it should be here soon thanks for the video I watched this video many years ago and I was reminded of it recently and I had to have one
Good decision! I'm sure you will enjoy the knife.
@@StefanSchmalhaus indeed
Very beautiful 😃
These manufacturers should pay you for producing these excellent reviews. They are much better than commercials. More informative and very compelling. Bravo!
Bewitched! BMW analogy works for me. Pretty tool.
Most of us knife freaks would think using the knife would do it justice. That's the most attractive slip joint knife I've ever seen. =)
My God, herr Schmalhaus, you really do spin a beautiful yarn. The fact that this knife made you feel something very deep and special really shone through the video. Beyond a doubt your best work yet, the care in making that knife is surely matched by the care shown when making this video (and what a grand choice in music!). Bravo, my friend, bravo!
I can see why you left this beauty till now. All the French knives you've shown are wonderful, but this really takes it to another level. The more I watched the more captivated I became. And to top it off the leather sheath appears to be designed to suit we left handed folk! I see from their website that they will ship to Australia, but oh my the price. Perhaps I might treat myself to one someday, maybe to celebrate something special. Thanks for the video Stefan
Ive started collecting French knives because of your great reviews.Brilliant
Le Capuchadou is clearly the "star" of all your videos. I will get one for myself soon. Thank you for your videos who are also small "hommages à la France".
Thank you for your very kind words!
Dear Stefan, quick technical question: what sharpening material do you use for your pocket knives?
@@olivieros4181 I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker.
Somehow your videos keep getting better and better. The Capuchadou is a beautiful work of art. I would like very much if you made a video showing your entire collection.
Perlen in TH-cam. Aufrichtigen Dank für diese Arbeit!
That knife is truly a work of art.
An accurate and elegant review.
Thank You.
WOW, what a gorgeous slipjoint. Stefan, I don't know how you do it, but you get the best knives in the world and make the best videos about them. PERIOD. Very impressive indeed.
BEAUTIFUL !!!!
The Fontenille Pataud company should put this video on their website!
I was looking to get this pocket knife for my 40th Birthday. Your excellent review has cemented my decision, thank you.
Simply gorgeous.
Your productions couldn't be nicer ! Perhaps one could never really become bored with such a knife collection to marvel at ;) Lovin it !
Absolutely beautiful knife, in every detail, thanks for sharing it, friend. Simply beautiful.
Bon appétit mon ami. Such a beauty. A real work of art.
WOW! What a knife!
Beautiful knives. Great review. Thanks.
As has been already said, another excellent video. I enjoy the product of your considerable skill and efforts.
Thankyou for another excellent presentation .Your hard work is greatly appreciated by myself as a knife enthusiast.Best wishes Chris.
Thank you for your very kind words!
das was wirklich "incredible" ist, ist das was ich immerwieder von dir über Messer lernen kann. Wuuuunderschönes Messer. Einfach Wunderschön! Danke und lieben Gruss aus der Heimat ! ;-)
I can almost feel the tradition and style! :-) What a great video!
and another beautiful review, danke Herr Schmalhaus!
I enjoy your reviews very much
Beautiful knife. A great video as always, Stefan
Another excellent review, Stefan--thanks!
@AussieMark909 Yes, it's hard to top this knife unless you want to go really crazy with exotic and precious materials. As for the price, it's still a lot less expensive than a Sebenza. With a Sebenza you get a masterpiece of precision, but the Capuchadou is a knife with a heart and a soul.
Another beautiful knife and outstanding review.
Thanks =)
What a stunning looking knife. Thanks for sharing :)
Nice knife!!
I just sent one of my designs to Willem O'Kelly (K'roo knives)
It's my first custom and I'm very excited :D
Green dyed giraffe bone handles, 3cm long 2.5mm thick nickel silver bolsters (both pinned to the liner as a secondary attachment point aside from the pivot), 1.5mm thick brass liners, stainless backspring and bail and a 3mm thick O1 tool steel blade.
It is a small (9cm closed) slipjoint, but I designed it to perform way above it's size.
I call it the Baby Bear Barlow, small yet strong and it is a barlow pattern.
great review great knife
You are welcome, Jesse! Thanks for stopping by.
Allways a real pleasure to view You're great presentations :-) Everytime it makes me wish for a new knife.
Thank You for great work ;-)
Best wishes from Norway !
Dear Stefan,
I know Richard Sossler very well (and have many capuchadou). Thanks for this great video.
The successor (FONTENILLE PATAUD) did a great work !
Bravo
Thank you for your very kind words!
Beautifull.
very nice knife!
@903lew Thank you, David! The first version of this video was 5 minutes longer because there is so much more to tell. But I had to compress the story to keep it interesting. Part of the challenge in making these documentary-like knife reviews is to decide what to leave out.
@Naturliebe Danke, Tito!
That knife is exquisite.I would not hesitate to use it often.The handle scales are beautiful and easier to maintain than any wood. Stefan, are J.A. Henkel kitchen knives considered Germanys finest kitchen cutlery?
@SpydieFan Which handle material did you go for?
@inisch Danke, Markus!
@ErikNice Thank you!
@FreyerWind Vielen Dank für Deine netten Worte!
@elbowroomtube Thank you for your kind words!
@scottsano Thanks for watching!
@Nebulax123 I watched some of your videos. I really like the fixed blade you did for Wako.
It is very nice indeed. I wonder a bit if I'd like the handholding because of the very curved handle.
@Roosterdad50 I spoke before I looked. Went back and watched video. Nice collection. : )
Great video Stefan !
& a famous knive by a great manufacture.
Fontenille Pataud provided a really good job ! ( as usually ! )
And if you love beautiful Laguiole, you must discover one another great artisan in Laguiole :
" Vent d'Aubrac "
tschüss !
excellent video, as usual! could you please show at least a picture with the le capuchadou against gentleman folder from fontenille?
thanks again for the information, i've come to know a more elegant side of knives.
@TonicLime1 Thanks for watching!
@GSMSoSV Thank you!
@Schmidt54 Thank you!
@Roosterdad50 The collection has grown a little bit since I did my collection video.
Thank you very much for your good review and the quality (as usual) of your video.
My question: how do you clean your knife after use?
watching this video makes me think about going back to Europe...
@RioDeLaNorte Danke!
I laughed at "stuck in fingerprint hell." It's a pretty knife. I may have to get one of my own.
@victorinoxfan I don't own a Klötzli but I've watched MrDagon007's videos on his Klötzlis. Indeed, they look splendid.
@stschmalhaus Just Placed my order, the 12cm Le Capuchadou in Water Buffalo, with the Lapis Lazuli inlay, You made a great choice with this variant, I ordered the RWL-34 Steel. I didn't purchase a sheath though, I will put this in my pocket with my wallet. Thanks for the review and the wonderful information.
i did buy one just because of you 😁
i kost that stone inlay but knife is nice anyway
Thanks for letting me know! I'm glad you like the knife.
What a work of art my friend. Love your choice of European blades. I am going to have to research this brand more.
On a completely off note, have you checked out the Swiss brand Klotzli? Very high quality, with a modern twist.
You're a pretty good producer. You could sell a storm or ice to Eskimos.
Thanks for the hard work you put into your videos. This knife is beautiful, but I'm more of a fan of the Chambriard knives.
Peace
Amazing video, I an going to go now and order the knife. I just can't decide between the Dark Ram Horn or Water Buffalo, both look very similar, any thought?
My problem, is with the size. Only mini pocket knives are really comfortable for me to carry--wish they had one of these a lot smaller.
Which fixed blade? As far as I remember, the only fixed blades in this video are those ancient knives from the 19th century.
It really is very nice, I think I would be afraid to use it.
@stephan123321 Das SRM 704 steht noch auf meiner Review-Liste.
😍
@MrDagon007 As soon as you hold it in your hand all your doubts are gone. ;-)
I will though order it in RWL-34 blade steel, no issue with the 12c27, but it's not much more for a modern super steel, so why not?
Stefan, I am curious about where you are from. At first assumption and due to your excellent grasp of English, I assumed German or Austrain. However, after hearing you use French, I am leaning a bit towards Swiss. Just something I thought about during the review, and again, excellent job!
what is the price of the fixed blade model?
How much is the knife at minute 8:00 is available on website?
I'm not sure what you mean. It's still the Capuchadou at minute 8:00.
your videos make me want to take my girlfriend on a picnic. i love the footage of food prep.
@stschmalhaus
Ciao
7:54 Ha! You know it.
Ich mach es kurz...der YT Kanal "stschmalhaus"...is definitive one of the finest channels on You Tube!
@SpydieFan They are all gorgeous. I'm afraid I can't help you. ;-)
@MrDbroad It's all these wives who thumb down my videos. LOL
The problem is you would never want to use it - so what is the point (no pun intended).
If you don't want to use the knife you can still enjoy it.
My accent is distinctively German. Your first guess was correct.
@hjphillips123456 Thank you!
"You are in fingerprint hell"
How can I order
@DickPoleman Are you planning to become a farmer in the Aubrac region? LOL
@6leafdom We live in the 21st century. There's nothing wrong with being hooked up to European knives. LOL
