The inline-six on the other hand , reminds you of a V12 : -Both are more balanced regarding vibrations , firing order and sound. -Neither needs a balance shaft. Another similarity are flat-plane crankshaft V8s (usually with 90° bank angle) and inline-fours : -Both have the same vibration and balance issues , which limits their individual cylinder displacement to 500-540 cc (save for the employment of balance shafts , dual mass flywheels , or a cast iron block , or very soft motor mounts and/or a doubtful long-term reliability).
@@FalconXE302 Speedo's are generally overexaggerating the speed a bit, seems to be about 5% on this on (315 speedo was 300 GPS). Nothing new, has always been so with every car, some cars have it a bit worse then others. My car had about 5% deviation as well, but I fitted some larger wheels and now it's more like 1-1.5% (120 speedo is 118-119 GPS).
I'm guessing it was rev-limited in 6th gear for safety. That thing (if it weren't due to other physical limits like the tires, transmission, differential, etc) probably had enough power in it to go even faster, aside from those limitations. It still had 7th gear (which granted is probably more of an overdrive gear).
Meanwhile , the new 2021 RS3 has the same engine power and 20 n-m / 14 lb-ft more torque. Someone said that is probably the last RS model without some form of hybridization / electrification. With such a little increment , either they are holding back on purpose or their inline-5 is at the limit (yes I know you can make it more powerful but I'm speaking about legal , regular production cars).
I agree. Honestly I think they will put a hybrid system on the 2.0 TSI for their next generation. Especially when in context, the VAG group seems to go more and more on electrification. At this point they are probably just trying to keep the 2.5 alive until they are too strangled by emissions to even make the power they make now.

Aside from the possible "doing it on purpose / holding back" strategy , I think they may be facing a few issues : -Their inline-5 is old. It's showing its age and would make more sense to start over than to spend money on the existing engine. -They may be having cooling issues. Where other automakers of the same group / platform and rival cars of the same size use an inline-four , they use an inline-5. -To make power on a relatively small engine , you need a relatively big turbocharger and high boost pressure. Assuming you spend enough money to sort out turbo lag , if the cylinders are too close to each other the cylinder bores will distort. Then you can reduce bore size , but this engine is already very undersquare. Or you can make it a semi-closed / closed deck , which would further exaggerate cooling issues. Or you can take cylinders further apart , and assuming there's enough space (in a front transverse setup there's not) it would still be nearly as expensive as a brand new engine. -Even if a more powerful engine were to be put in place , a transmission has to take all the torque and all the power. I don't think it's a coincidence that the main rival (the Mercedes A45S , barely more powerful but with a smaller engine) has the very same torque. Trasverse Fwd-based gearboxes have to take a lot of power and torque through a lot of gears in not a lot of space.

The main rival in my opinion is the Mercedes A45S , which puts out the same torque , twenty more horsepower , higher specific torque and power.. All with a smaller , simpler engine. I still hope you are right though.

As of emissions, if mercedes did it, it s probably a matter of time till VAG tries to catch up. What sucks with these new Audi 5 cylinder engines, is that they never get tuned to rev above 7-7.5k.
The old 20V started singing above 7k...
