  • Today it's time for another #TransgenderJoy - this time with real joy! I thank my supportive Sisters, all of you who watch and support me, and even those of you who send me your hate.
I'm moving forward because of you!

Just curious… so I hope it’s okay that I ask, since this is the first video of you I’ve seen as yt just recommended it to me. Is your voice naturally changed through HRT, or was it something you practiced? Voices seem to be one of the hardest things to change during transition, and yours sounds so perfectly feminine and fits you perfectly. But I’m probably just being nosey, so feel free to not answer if you don’t feel comfortable with it.

Well, first, thank you so much for your praise about my voice! That is still the part of me I like the least. I appreciate you telling me otherwise. 💜💜💜
As a quick biology lesson, the larynx drops because testosterone loosens the web of muscles in the neck that hold it up and thickens the vocal folds. Both of those make a voice deeper and darker. But HRT doesn't affect those muscles once they've been changed. I had to learn how to hold my larynx up to brighten my voice, then there are other aspects to voice I had to make habitual - higher pitch, changing pitch, different inflections, different words, different way you look at people...it goes on and on!
So yes, it's all technique and practice. I believe strongly anybody can learn to move the parts around for any voice you want. To be clear, I'm not a voice expert - I'll refer you to my friend Jasmine Vine for more information:
      www.youtube.com/@JasmineVine
The hardest part for me, however, was not the technique. It was owning that I would communicate the way I do now. It was strikingly difficult - especially with my immediate family, especially my wife. She has been VERY accepting, but it was a very big change to communicate in a way different to how I'd done it for 52 years. I wrote an article about that on Gender Identity Today (link in my bio) if you'd like to read that! 💜
I hope that was good information! Please feel free to reach out using the person website link in my bio if you'd like more discussion!

@@amethystaherrick that was all great info. You explained it just fine and answered my questions. And congratulations on all the hard work that has allowed you to shift your vocal chords towards a higher register. Thank you!
I have a younger cousin whose ftm and we frequently message each other, but he lives hundreds of miles away and I haven’t actually talked to him since prior to his transition. I finally saw a video of him about a year after he started HRT and the first thing I noticed was how deep and manly his voice sounded. I remember telling him, “omg! You’ve become a full grown man!” And he just laughed at me. So your explanation about how the larynx drops would even make sense to why his FtM transition caused such a dramatic shift in his voice.

@@georgettethorsnes9626 - yes, FtMs do have it easier with respect to voice. It "only" take hormone therapy!
That said...your cousin faces much more difficult surgery than I do. But I have to get hair removal and he does not. But testosterone is more rigidly controlled than estrogen...
It's never easy. It is, however, well worth it.

I have plenty of suggestions! The biggest one, however, is just to listen to understand. Your niece will guide you through her identity and gender. You need only listen.
If you'd like to have a video chat, please feel free to reach out using the personal website link in my bio. I'd love to talk and answer any questions. This is what I do!
