Lived in Shrew.sbury during the 60s. Remember the Cambrian so well. A pristine Manor would climb out of the
town through Meole Brace early in the afternoon. Magnificent sight

Fascinating footage of a (WSL?) special from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth starting with a period shot of the Shrewsbury station frontage with Ford Cortinas much in evidence. Also adverts of trips to London for forty-six shillings. The train Engine is BR Std4 4-6-0 75014. There's an odd looking mixed train at 1.30 (location?) and is that Moat Lane Jnc at 4.15? I'm guessing the train reverses at Aberystwyth back to Dovy Jnc where 75020 backs on to take the train on to Barmouth. A brief glimpse of the Talyllyn Railway at 11.30. It would be interesting if anyone who was on the train could provide more information.

Lovely. I always though the Down CCE divided at Machynlleth Pwllheli from Aberystwyth sections) and the Up CCE was joined at Dovey Junction.
Nice special to have travelled on though!

I think the location around 1:30 is Welshpool although it is much changed now.

With what looked like eight carriages that class 4 did well

Yes. I think 7 was the limit normally. Eg the Up CCE would merge sections from Pwllheli and Aberystwyth at Dovey Junction, three from Aberystwyth and Four from Pwllheli (or possibly the other way round). The shunt would take about eight to ten minutes. Loved it. My railway it was. British Railways. Dad said, ‘it is a nationalised industry so everybody owns it.’ ‘You mean the engine is MINE?!’ ‘Yes.’

Thanks for that. I studied at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1965 to 1968 and did that journey many times, although I think that it was probably always a DMU. Any idea what year this was filmed?

75014 is still with us, I think
