I worked in Bldg 21 from July of 1987 through September 1990, I was 19, 2 weeks out of H.S. when I started.

I worked in 15, and had Bert Wallace as a covering Supervisor. He would come over from 93 to make rounds. He was a "just do your job and there won't be any problems" kind of guy. We all liked him. I also worked in 43 and his wife was my Supervisor. The only thing that kept me there as long as I was, was that I was able to put in for transfers to different buildings when I was getting burned out. Nursing supervisors probably didn't have that opportunity. I am glad I was able to recognize when it was time to move on, or I would have gone to the point of no return.. Now, I thank God every month for KPPC, when my NYS retirement check comes. It was all worth it :) Great video BTW...

Very interesting video I worked in bldg 15 about 10 years as a nurse. Tom Larkin NA 1. The best boss kind man an great nurse. 15 was a pretty dangerous bldg at the time

The campus is so huge it took us 4 visits to explore most of the important buildings 10 years ago. But, when did it actually shut down? The thought of renovating just the main building for example it would run into millions just for the asbestos removal before a hammer drops.

I worked there in the 80s. As most of my family did. I started in housekeeping. Then, building 23, the rehab then transferred to the storehouse. Left in 10-19-88 after being injured on the job. Now living in Kansas.

Very cool Story. I love places like this with the stories that they tell. I feel a lot of exploring is about the story a place tells.
Very well done. The interviews were fascinating- it gave insight into the day to day activities and interactions of the staff and the patients. It is sad to see so many buildings that have been abandoned- I know that the cost of clean-up for re use would be prohibitive because of the scale and the amount of hazardous materials each building contains (mold, asbestos and lead).
I've visited there a few times and plan on going back; my hobby is photography and there is a wealth of material to photograph and document before something happens and it's gone forever.
I really enjoyed your work and look forward to seeing your future video-documentaries in the near future.
I was able to share this with others extremely interested in the topic of mental health institutions in the past.
Watched many psychiatric hospital videos, this is one of better ones extremely interesting especially former employees' reflections.

This is a very timid documentary compared to what really went on at this place. Growing up on LI and now settled here, please look up past history of this location. It has a very morbid past. Still a shame the building suffers. Beautifully built piece of property. It is well known to be haunted. I personally know, as I went in the 2000's with a group, ghost hunting when I was in my 20's. Let's just say, I will not return for more than one reason. Very evil place.

the people in the documentary worked there so they get pension checks. even if they saw bad things (which they probably did), they are not going to bite the hand that feeds them. the older man with the hat on has sad eyes. he saw some shit. they all did. isn't it ironic how a beautiful piece of real estate can be tainted by the mistreatment of patients?

Knew shrinks who managed the hospital they were very nice down to earth people outside of the hospital. Sadly, we need to bring back the intuitional system. it's immoral to leave so many people on the streets unable to take care of themselves a risk to them and others. Institutions are scary but they serve a great purpose and need to be brought back. Mandatory incarceration for people unable to take care of themselves needs to be brought back as well. And soon!
This is on a whole new level, great job looking forward to seeing more like this. Also, we want to visit King's Park soon.

At 24:25 of this video. About that golden gloves boxer who was a patient at kings park psychiatric center, he must have gotten hit in the head many times and must have gotten brain damage from boxing. I also have to add that being that golden gloves boxer pesant died, he must of died from being under 2% body fat. Being under 2% body fat is very dangerous and he must have no energy/fat to burn left and died.
Great documentary for sure, a lot of history in this place. I grew up in that town. It's a shame the government spent so much money to build this psych center and ruined so many great jobs for these people! Like the employee said, the place was mismanaged! It could have been saved but unfortunately the government is not conservative!
Much of the reasoning behind rehabbing those buildings is they're filled with asbestos. I grew up there and had my first teenage job there. Reagan closed much of mental health also, so federal funds ended too..
I'm gonna share this to my channel you did a great job and I did a video today here its funny how I called it forgotten land. It's a little sad to see but much still lives there on grounds its being put to use

The KPPC facility is on of the most amazing places my eyes have ever witnessed. The grand scale, the beautiful old architecture, its such a shame that a mighty historical fortress lays in waste!! It really got an emotional reaction out... SMH

Very likely in these types of places unfortunately. This documentary only highlights the careers of the 3 individuals in this film. My next film, which has yet to be announced, is on a neighboring hospital. I will cover every angle of that place regarding the good and the bad, as well as diving in to the history.

It’s a very nice place I walk with my dog almost every Saturday with my kids when they were younger playing with the dogs with my wife walking around it’s really enjoyable the nature and I always wandered what is the story behind this place and your video is very informative thank you
