I’ve always wondered that too, and I’ve been clear that in 1992, the world just wasn’t ready for a female powerhouse duo with such a dark, edgy entrance. I mean, this was the same world that turned against the Lilith fair. Pop was so lighthearted back then and there was probably little market for something like this that pushed the envelope. And I don’t think this group lasted very long. At least this song became known, with that unforgettable gothic video!
‘Going global on an atomic level’ - that song was a #4 at the Billboard Hot 100 later in the year - most non-US acts would rather be a one-hit wonder there than have a horde of minor hits in the same country - they never had any big hits again as Detroit was fired the next year
Over the years I’ve gotten the honor and pleasure of becoming friends with Marcella and if you don’t know already Marcella is truly a genuine great person not just professionally but also on a personal level, she’s got one of the most kindest and caring hearts I’ve ever known, and hasn’t let stardom or fame go to her head, wishing all the very best:) ❤
I've seen several interviews with her and that certainly seems to be the case. Probably because she had so much experience coming up through the ranks; she had far more credibility as a musician than Siobhan even though more people knew who Siobhan was from Bananarama. Most people don't realize that the high dueting voice on several of Eric Clapton's classics are Marcy, and that she wrote some of his biggest hits. She has credibility running through her veins.
Songs with depth, sadness and also melancholy but you can still sing the lyrics & feel uplifted. The keyboard & rhythm section on the record sound great
Thats because Siobhan took heed from Marcella's vocals...stayyyyyyyyyy with meeeee eeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...okay Marcy babe! Who could refuse that utterly amazing surreal voice...
You can hear the passion in Marcy's voice through it all. Siobhan seems darker than usual. It's heartbreaking to know that this was their last time, they were amazing, without a doubt. Their voices just really get to me in this performance.
Wow if you pay close attention to the vibrational changes in Both Marcella and Siobhan's voices, they were breaking and getting emotional and tried very hard to push through it. Good God!! They KNEW it was their last performance and were emotional about it. You can tell that they enjoyed performing together. The music press at the time tried so hard to make it seem that they both had constant catfights. Their was at least 38,000 people in that audience. Absolute chills. What an honour it is to be a 90's kid.
This is like if you mix The cure , Tears for Fears , Whitney Houston and The Smiths with hints of Enigma , this is just a rare diamond , loved this girls
When this song was released I was a pure blood metal-head, but... when the video for the song played on Mtv I made sure to watch it. Great song, great video.

Marcella Detroit is an amazing vocalist, and she looks bloody fantastic too - she was 57 when she did Popstar to Operastar, but could easily have passed for 40.
Both incredible singers , but it's so awesome that from bananarama to Shakespeare sister the guitarist evolved and reinvented herself from the 80s to the 90s and had major success with 2 groups , most artists cant do that , but this song , her voice , her guitar skills, dark edgy so raw and just multitalented, shaped my teen yrs in high school, in my 30s and wow cant get enough of this song , long live Great Music

My God. What a voice. They had genuine talent that mostly went unappreciated. The crap that is on TV now, it's awful. Why is it allowed? You'll be appreciated more in time.
Their voices shouldn't work together and yet they were absolutely perfect. Shame they fell apart and it took them a lifetime to make up, but so glad they have. People always said the Bananarama girls couldn't sing a note, Siobhan sure can.
