Incredible fact: Hopkins appeared for less than 20 minutes but his presence is unfforgetable during the entire movie.
To me, he ruined a potentially great movie.
@@RIVALContentJammerz😂😂 you're funny
The first Jurassic Park had less than 10 minutes of computer graphics.
@@RIVALContentJammerz😂😂😂
@@RIVALContentJammerzlol you should try in stand up comedy
she nailed that accent. She made it subtle instead of forced. It came out more when her character forgot herself. Incredibly well done
It was okay. Lol
No, she just said that Hopkins made it up, on the spot, within the scene.
It’s improv. She was never using a West Virginia accent, or hiding one.
She used a slight accent, based on where the character is from, but she wasn’t acting it to come and go, depending on the scene and dialogue.
Her performance was excellent, and Oscar caliber reactions, to situations that we don’t normally see, even in more serious thrillers, or movies about serial killers.
She wasn’t hiding the accent. Hopkins just makes a point, to let her know he’s smarter than her, and anyone she’s likely ever come across. He reminds her of her roots, as a power move, because she seems to be in the position of power, when they speak. His calling her a rube, and talking down to what her life must’ve been like, is to take away her confidence, and frustrate, while also showing he can help her.

😆
@@CorbCorbin um no. I watched the video you’re repeating. And I’ve seen the film. Many times. And she does it throughout the film.
@@peterlohnes1yeah precisely but that works for her character because she grew up poor and in foster homes and joined the force to be something more, so obv cultivated a more "well bred" image to fit in. Lecter sees right through this. But she slips in times of stress and you here her more rural accent come through, specially at the shoot out in the dark in the end. Perfectly played.
What a gorgeous lady, humble & charming, great actress.
I could listen to her tell stories forever. There’s something so calming about her. 😊
It’s the voice.
@@kellygreenii Voice, posture, sense of calm surety, as well as being good at structuring the story. It all comes together to form a pleasant experience for the listener.
She did a voiceover role in an episode of X-Files. It's worth a view.
I was thinking the same thing!!❤
@@AlextheENTP Those things make her a good storyteller, and add to her charisma. Her voice is what has the calming effect the poster mentions.
Make her a soprano instead of a deep alto, most of that soothing effect would vanish.
“… that accent you try to hide; pure West Virginia.”
🤔
Sounds like a compliment!😂
Actually the moment she's speaking of: "Who was you father dear? Was he a coal miner? Does he stink of the lamp?"
@@AlextheHistorian that line sounds to me more like he is mocking her heritage- not necessarily her accent.
@@AlextheHistorianhe also mocks it when he says “oh Agent Starling, do you really think you can dissect me with this blunt little tool??”
West Virginian by any chance ? :D
“That accent you’ve tried so desperately to shed; pure West Virginia”
She always gives great insightful interviews.

Two actors who create energy together during a scene is what makes some movies special.
Agreed. That’s why I love Mia Khalifa and Sasha Grey
Which scene ? It's about the hole movie : when two incredible actors meet each other !
🎈but at no time during the filming of the movie were they ever acting at the same time, in a scene, together, never,

As long as you're not John Hinckley you are good.
They both were next level in this. I remember the scene. He was so in character to improvise that line.
As well as aerating the "nice Chianti".
Jodie is so lovely to listen to, her sense of humour and intelligence just jumps out at you.
Or he just enjoyed humiliating her. She didn’t once mention it was a trick to help her act, but instead focused on how inadequate it made her feel. It’s a perfect moment, too, nobody can accuse him of anything but acting.

He was cleverly making her play the part perfectly ❤
Yes. Well stated. Lecter was mocking Clarice as Hopkins was mocking Foster. Pure genius.
Great actors are pulling something out of each other. Love that synergy.
Or he's an asshole.
@@garlicgirl3149Things like this helped to make the film a masterpiece.

Jody Foster is just so endlessly interesting. And smart. And honest.

I heard that during the scene where she's describing the lambs screaming they had originally planned to cut in flashback scenes, but their faces were so powerful that they left those as the actual shot. I can still remember her facing as she recalled the memories, the interaction was chilling. This is one of those rare times we get to witness true magic in story telling. "Thank you Clarice..."
You're right, there was going to be flashback scenes.
Extremely talented and well spoken star
Anthony Hopkins is a great actor!❤
I think it added profoundly to the feel of that moment - the heightened tension was palpable

When two actors both get an Oscar for their performances facing each other… chills down my spine.
Sir Anthony Hopkins knew what her button was to make her performance even better and he pushed it. Thank you, Sir! 🙌
Exactly!!!!!!!!👍👏
Then he made migs swallow his tongue. The man is a master manipulator
It wasn't ethical though, cuz she didn't consent to be caused emotional distress (cuz the anger WAS, however small, a form of distress). I wouldn't chastise or punish the dude for it, just thought it's worth pointing out.
@JDdr86 no its not worth mentioning especially if you don't work in their industry and deciding what's "ethical". They both survived. They both won Oscars.
@sonofhollywood2648 Ah, c'mon, dude! Please, don't break my balls with that whole "you need to be one of them to have the right to formulate/express an opinion" bull$h¡✝️. Do you seriously think that I need to, for example, work in the circus, to be able to determine that, ethically speaking, they shouldn't pinch or electrocute the animals?
They worked beautifly together. Two pros.
❤ l really love when artists i admire turn out to be so intelligent and so emotionally well tuned. Jody Foster is amazing.❤

It's amazing how the scenes between Clarice and Hannibal MADE this film. Their interaction as officer in training and psycho psychologist, or even student and mentor in a way is captivating.

This is how chemistry is made on screen.
That IS a great moment in the film. Clarice worked so hard to get from her West Virginia roots to the FBI but Lecter knows she still has shame from being from a poor, place with a lot of uneducated people. He jabs into that soft spot by shaming her for the accent that she had not overcome.
FBI is also in Clarksburg WV
It's Amazing this Fabulous Film owes so much to the 4-or-5 scenes between Clarice and Hannibal... Those scenes were the Spinal Cord to the Movie...

Agreed. Saw it first at age 12 in a theater. It's just such a well crafted work of art. I've seen it lots over the years. Sorta comfy at this point. Can just relax and enjoy the show.
This woman has had prominent roles in 2 of the greatest films ever made Taxi Driver and Silence of the Lambs.
I concur. She is so talented and beautiful. Very down to earth and sweet.
Among an otherwise stellar career outside of those two films.
She has a singularity about her acting ability. One of a kind.
Plot twist: he didn’t know the cameras were rolling 😂
Nice😂
😂😂😂
I heard that he was locked up in a room for much of the film and what is shown is NOT them actually talking face to face. I also heard her say that they hardly actually saw each other for the entirety of filming.
@@noirjacques3274Eh, I’m not sure I buy that, there were quite a lot of scenes where they were both in the same shot. Though I could believe that they didn’t see each other too much during filming considering that Hannibal isn’t actually in the movie for very long, he’s just so memorable that it feels like he was in it for longer than he actually was.
@@BLZ231 I was sceptical hearing what I heard too… and that was from Jodie Foster, herself. She was quite aloof about SAH, saying he and her didn’t have to much communication during shooting, as I said.
This was a genious scene in the film. My take was that Hannibal Lecter is able to detect the accent that Clarice Starling is trying to suppress and, in doing so, assert intellectual and psychological dominance. AH and JF acted this scene and the film brilliantly.
Lecter knows she's a hillbilly.
She acted very good, but he is overated, just like he overacted in every role.

That's the thing with stage actors. They are, generally, a much higher caliber than the run of the mill screen actor. Often they have extensive years training in the art and then many years of night, and day, performances on stage at the theater. So often is that they can just switch up accents instantly.
Chris Pine was also amaze by Benedict on how swiftly he could go from non acting to acting and from mild mannered to convincing rage. Because they are highly trained and experienced in the art.
Now, by the time Silence came out, Hopkins was already a legend of stage and screen. Many decades of experience.
Stage actors have to do more with less and camera actors have to do less with more. Michael Caine was famous for saying it was all about the eyes. Got to do more than eyes on the stage. And stage actors have to play to the single eye of the camera and not to the "back seats",
Jodi is still beautiful

I’ve always liked Jodie Foster’s acting since she was a kid. Wish she’d be in more movies.
Anthony did that to make her mad. Brilliant acting on his part.
It actually mirrors the book. In the book it was her coming from a poor, rural background that she was trying to cover and he saw through it. Love that they found that dynamic authentically.
Solid work by Anthony.

Jodie Foster: One of the few really greats 🥰
Her performance in Taxi Driver was incredible…she is one of the greats.
Man does she even age
She does, but without any plastic surgery and it’s not needed! She’s true to herself and real. I recently watched the movie “Nyad” where she plays alongside Annette Bening. Good movie, awesome acting of both ladies. But I already am a fan since I first saw Jodie in “The Accused”.
You also have a great story telling ability
.. great movies under your career...thanks
That explains the tension that was so important to the story. Absolutely brilliant.
All five Oscars were heavily well deserved. Let The Silence of the Lambs be the purest introduction of the horror genre to the Academy Awards, and not just some slasher film like Nightmare on Elm Street, or Friday the 13th, or others of the like.
Hopkins doesn't really have rhe male lead though. There isnt one. Granted,he still deserved to win for supporting but lead with that little screen time is nuts.
@@christofferjenzen78I think it just goes to show how good he is. It feels like he's the male lead despite the fact he's not in the film that much.
@@christofferjenzen78 Lead and supporting have nothing to do with screentime. It has to do with the importance and impact of the role itself on the story. Yes, Clarice is the main character but Lecter is the driving force that allows the plot to unfold. He actually drives both the plot (the events that transpire) and the story (Clarice growing as a character as she overcomes her childhood trauma). Even when he's not in the film, his presence is felt throughout. They only have a few scenes together but the impact those scenes have on the plot and character development have so much weight to them that those scenes feel much, much longer than they actually are. Clarice and Lecter almost feel like a duo. That's why he's a lead, not supporting.
@@rustincohle2135 Lead and supporting are definitions for protagonist, antagonists and tritagonists. Hannibal very much drives the plot which rarely is the definition of the protagonist, they usually don't drive their own plot. Importance to the plot is a reason mentioned but it's often misguided, like Day-Lewis in Gangs of New York. Everything about Hannibal is the definition of a great Supporting character and Hopkins did win several awards in that category.

You Ms. Foster, are more powerful than you realize.
Silence of the Lambs was utterly terrifying but had a kind of dark, poetic beauty to it as well. Psychological Thriller / Horror perfection.

I specifically remember that moment and yes i felt it deeply. It was all over your face. You two made the movie what it was and I doubt anyone can recreate that level of authenticity and genius. ❤
Adore you Jodie and your fantastic career. Never stop 😎🙂🙌
Man i would love for them to fo one more movie one more time 😭🙌just the old cast
Wow , he actually helped her a lot ❤
As a great experienced actor he created the atmosphere which helped her immersion into the role ❤
on the one hand, it's of course intimidating for a young actor to have such a prominent partner, but on the other hand, it probably helps a lot! Not only in terms of learning from him, but also in terms of immersion into the role. It's easier to believe you are Clarisse when there is amazing not-blinking Anthony Hopkins in front of you.
Now I started to wonder how does it feel for a more or less competent young actor to work in one scene with a ridiculously bad partner. An experienced one probably wouldn't care, just would do their job and be professional, but for a young actor it must be super off-putting to have a wretched partner. Pity, we will never know how it feels (because everyone is polite and will never share what they thought and felt about their partners when those were bad).
She is brilliant 🙂

Jodie Foster really is just Clarice. Perfect choice.

So fn brilliant!
This was such a beautifully sincere reflection
That's how good he is 😅
No, it's how good the two of them together are. Neither could have pulled it off alone.
Why does she still look absolutely beautiful
Such a talented actress
And you're FANTASTIC, my dear!
BOTH of you!!!
I watched the movie again yesterday and Jodie is right: as Clarice she’s humiliated, scared but brave at the same time when interacting with Hannibal.
I’ve heard Jodie was genuinely scared overall of how Anthony looked and acted.
At the end of filming she admitted being scared of him, only to have Hopkins immediately respond, “I’ve been scared of YOU this whole time!”
Wouldn't be surprised if they were intentionally kept apart between shooting to really ramp up the illusion of them being total strangers
I think Dr. Lecter was poking fun at her hick Southern accent (no offense to myself for having one), not her attempt at one. People from the south, or New England often get ribbed about their accent. It isn’t usually insulting or even mean spirited.
