Zelda Skyward Sword 4K HD vs Original - Next Gen vs Wii Graphics Comparison

  • This is a graphics comparison of Skyward Sword in HD and Skyward Sword for the Wii. This is running on Dolphin Emulator in 4k HD with enhanced lighting effects to simulate what a Nintendo Switch or next gen version could look like compared to the original. Note the original Wii version renders at 480p, but the example in the video is rendering at 528p due to Dolphin not being able to run at standard 480p, so even the bad version is going to look better than the original.

    You messed up the colours, the HD version is way too dark and washed out, it looks uninviting.

      Lee Grant It brings the whole atmosphere of the game down, it's supposed to look like a bright impressionist painting, not an LCD TV from a side angle.

      Arceus is right. I mean everyone has their own opinions. A lot of people think the remake of the arkham games for ps4 xbox one look worse than the original ps3 / 360 version even though they have better lighting, higher resolution and are running on a superior engine. but here, the lighting settings I was using wasn't optimized.. if you watch in the middle of the video, I actually change the lighting to make it look a bit better. Each area needs different settings to look optimal. So settings for the lanayru province will look bad when on skyloft.

      It does look odd. I played it all the way through on dolphin at standard 1080p. It didn't look like that exactly. It was MUCH sharper and more inviting looking than the original Wii version or even when you play it in the Wii U. But the coloring seen here in the video, at least on mine, was definitely not as washed out. Two problems I did come across using Dolphin, though, we're CTDs when entering a trial, this forcing me to use OpenGL instead of one of the DX options. It was choppy, but it allowed me to get through it. The second, at the very end when you are running down the spiral toward the final boss and all those movies are running at you - FPS drop from consistent 30 to 5-10! That was then, though.... I believe I was using a GTX 460... Wow, this game has been out for a long time....

      Jace You are correct on the painted look of the art style of the game. It's really inspired by the works of impressionist art. That's what they are trying to achieve with it.
      4K one kinda defeats the purpose of the art style though. The graphics may look more sharper and crisper than the original but at the sacrifice to the colors of the graphics. They look too washed out and dull. If they do make a remake of this game on later Nintendo consoles like the Nintendo Switch, I hope that it doesn't look washed out and dull.

    The lighting mod messes with the colors a bit too much and obscures some of the visuals. It doesn't feel as natural as the conversion from Gamecube Wind Waker's lighting to the WiiU Wind Waker's. Other aspects are a welcome upgrade, but the game just looks too different.
    Such differences are the reason why Twilight princess HD wasn't messed with too much in terms of upgrading the polygons and adding 3-d texture mapping techniques.

    The thing about Skyward Sword is that it's made to look like a water painting, and this does amazing well with draw distance on the Wii. Far away buildings look like watercolor abstract paintings almost but when you get closer it renders them in softly and still retains that soft hue. I don't know if this would be lost in a remaster but I'd hope not. A lotta of original themes and concepts get lost during remasters, upscales, and HD ports. Really happens in movies even more.

    Skyward Sword HD is less colorful than the normal wii version, it ruins the experience honestly (also it lags :/) it's not as cool as the wii version, plus who wants to play a Zelda game using a keyboard or an Xbox controller this game is best with the wii's motion controls. I grew up with this game and it's one of my favorites but this isn't the way it should be played, it kills the nostalgia and the feels of the game.

    It's important to note a couple of things.. First off is that almost every Zelda game only runs at 30fps and is not even playable at 60fps. 60fps in Skyward Sword means 200% speed (2x speed up) instead of 100%. That should put most of the "it's not even 60fps" comments to rest.. There is alot of that in every video that shows Zelda being emulated with Dolphon.
    Second is that he's running the game with shaders. An unofficial version of Dolphin known as Ishiiruka allows you to put shaders/filters and texture packs on the games you emulate. Giving them different pallets of colors, tone, blur, lensflares and more. (Think of them as Reshade/SweetFX like you can get for several games on PC)

    SS had a pretty cool backgroundblur effect that tried to look more like a blurred painting than a real camera blur. the problem was, with the Wii's resolution, you couldn't see too much of that.
    Here this effect looks supercool and makes me hope they're working on a HD remake for Switch. Doesn't have to be 4K at all, 1080p would be absolutely fine. But that game seems to have aged far better than I thought and still looks nice with higher resolution.

    • @GameOverJesse
      @GameOverJesse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      when I fixed the lighting, it looked good for the second dungeon. Adding a secondary lighting source to the one the game already has is a bit tricky. Since you're combining the two, you need to optimize it for the area you are in. So a setting that looks good in the lanayru province, may look like crap in skyloft where it is already brighter, but may look a little better inside a house or dungeon.
      I'll be making a future one without the second lighting effect though, but if you watch around the middle of the video in skyloft where link is just standing, you can see the lighting change from me trying to adjust it.
      Anyways, thanks for the comment. Hopefully, I'll be able to find a setting that looks great for every area.

      Menges I have to disagree with you man. I only have to recalibrate the Wii Remote Plus at least twice and they are very rare.
      If you have to constantly have to recalibrate your controller that frequently, that means neither your Wiimote Plus, Nunchuck, or both may be malfunctioning.

    Though getting rid of the jaggies and gaming in 4k is a must (or at least 4K DSR if you have a 1080p monitor), your choice of the lighting mods is making the game look a lot worst, it's super washed out and overly bright. Is there an actual texture mod in your video or are you simply rendering the game in higher res using dolphin?

    hey man. just wanted to add that, you can play this game if you have a wii or wii u as well. by that i mean. Plug in your wii/wii u. connect sensor bar and place wher eyou want it. and turn it on. Sync Wii Mote to computers bluetooth and it'll now work with sensor bar. so you dont need to buy a dolphin sensor bar. and you dont need to grab a 360 controller. as long as you have the new wii remote with motion plus or an old wii remote with motion plus sensor you're gold. i played through ALL skyward sword like this. i initially had issues with swinging until i realized you dont actually swing your arm, rather flick your wrist in the right direction and link swings 99% of the time the way you want. this issue was there for me on the original wii as well. - let me explain this better. when im playing my hands are right infront and my controller is facing the TV. lets say i need to swing the sword from right side to left. what i would do with my hands is, quickly jerk right and swing to the left as if i was actually swinging a sword. now the problem is that first jerk movement i did to position the controller more to my right so i can swing left would cause an input to be made making link swing LEFT to right instead. making me hate on the game. however this was easily fixed by just flicking the wrist in the direction you wanna swing.

    Everytime when I look up on TH-cam and Google and thinking my head, I am always obsessing and wishing for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD to come on the Nintendo Switch with a good lighting quality Graphics just like they already did with Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Link's Awakening. Skyward Sword is my favorite game since 2011 so I think it will be fun to look at the Remake and have a lot of fun when hopefully Nintendo will changed there mind about shutting down so my question is *Do you guys all wish for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD to come on the Nintendo Switch?

    While the HD version is definitely better, it seems like some filters or colors were altered. The HD version has an odd green tint and the flying segments are almost blinding due to the whiteness. The Wii version looks more natural and while having a lot more brown and yellow, seems better color balanced.
    Just my two bits, but I'd love to see the HD graphics with the original tint and color balance.

    While I find 4K HD to be quite excessive for just regular viewing (especially since most screens literally do not have enough pixels to display in 4K), I can see this being absolutely *great* for GMVs where the scene is cropped. I've seen some great Zelda GMVs where some of the scenes are cropped for the purpose of only displaying relevant parts of it, but the video quality had to suffer because of it. Having access of 4K recordings of the game would eliminate this problem. :D

    I like both, but prefer the original. I don't know, the blochy/blocky/pixelated-ness of the original helps give it the whole feel of it being a painting in motion... And I agree w/ other comments about the HD being a little too bright or washed out.
    Definitely am hoping for an HD remake for the switch either way with hopefully the same feel as the original! It'd be nice if it were a bit similar to Breath of the Wild's graphics, I think.

  • @Teddy2tie
    @Teddy2tie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    This may sound crazy, but I prefer the quality of the original game to the HD. I'll admit the HD one does look good and I'm excited to see it in Breath of the Wild, but the crispness of the footage detracts from the overall aesthetic of Skyward Sword. It's always reminded me of a water coloured painting where sometimes the lines blur between what is seen. The graphic quality of the original was not great, but it worked with what it had to produce what I would say is a beautiful game. I think there was room for improvement with the original game, but just raising the graphical quality of the footage ruins what art style the game had.
    With all that said, I love what you've done here. It does look a lot cleaner and was a great test to see what it could look like. Thanks. ^-^

    Is there a version that adds the color filter back in?
    The colors were vibrant, and the golden hue of everything made it look like an old storybook, because that's almost what it is, the origin story of the Hero, the Goddess, and The Demon. I might get this just to try it out, but I'd still prefer the older colors come back. if there was a mod that added outlines to everything, that would also be great. just something to make this amazing game even more charming, and memorable.

    The reason why this looks bad to people is because the game was upscaled to 4k, this isn't running at native 4k, and not only upscaled, but upscaled FROM standard definition. And not to mention, the game is running on textures and stuff suitable for 480p.
    If Nintendo were to remaster this game, it will:
    -run at native 1080p
    -60fps (hopefully)
    -ultra high quality textures
    -ultra high quality lighting
    -ultra high quality shadows
    -MAYBE FXAA if needed
    And some other graphical improvements. Which will look 100x better than this upscaled 4k footage (plus most of us rendered this video in 1080p)

    • @hyliankate4804
      @hyliankate4804 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The game is being rendered in native 4k thanks to dolphin. if you have a good enough monitor, you could even render the game in 8k or higher. Also, Wii textures are at 576p. but it outputs in 480p. This is similar to rise of the tomb raider on ps4 having 4k textures but only rendering in 1080p

      Na realidade pode, mas não é feito para tal. Desde o Pikmin 3 foi debatido sobre o 4K até mesmo no WiiU, mas o console passaria um sufoco. Penso que Skyward sendo tão otimizado quanto é e sem muita necessidade de ajustar poligonos ou iluminação, basicamente seria um upscale com apenas texturas mais definidas. Acredito que o switch seria capaz de tal.
      Tambem não gostei dessa tentativa de filtro e cores no video.
