I learned something about cutting glass, but why did you cut the hexagon out of the middle of the glass? I would have aligned one side and one point with the edges so if I messed it up I might have enough glass left to try again.

The glass is scrap I salvaged form changing the windows on my house, so I have a ton of that stuff lying in storage :)
If I was limited by the quantity of usable glass, I would definitely take the approach you've mentioned.
In general, it is easier to cut glass when you remove bigger pieces. Removing really small pieces can be a pain in the neck.
