    I said it in every other comment that I've made in Comix Zone related videos and retrospectives and I'll say it again. Someone should make a spiritual sequel or even a direct one. This is my pitch for it:
    - Cel shaded graphics in the line of the Jojo's bizarre adventure games.
    - Implementation of 3D for the transitions from page to page, for Mortus's hand drawing and for Sketch Turner when jumping from panel to panel. Those things could include 3D that contrasts with a very 2D feel of what happens inside the comic.
    - A story set decades after the original game in which we learn about the different changes that have happened in Sketch's comics that merges the crazy fantasy aspects of the original with the real world. The story could be Sketch revisiting his old comic backlog, recounting what happened since: Did Sketch really get into a romantic relationship with the fictional Alissa Cyan? Did he ever lose creative control of his work to an editorial? Was it given to other artists? Did it go through a Rob Liefeld like Heroes Reborn stage or an Ultimate version or trippy Alan Moore or Grant Morrison period...?)

    • @KF-hf4nt
      @KF-hf4nt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Viewtiful Joe is pretty much this game's spiritual successor. A fan gets pulled into his favorite medium and brawls through it using what makes that medium special, joe using movie/film effects like slow mo, zoom in, fast forward, etc. The basic brawling in VJ (ie when you don't have any powers) feels a lot like CZ if slightly faster, more of a deliberate, slower, more calculated use of attacks rather than just mashing the attack button and split second timing and with dodges instead of blocking.

    This and Alyssia Dragoon did for the Sega what Mayhem in Monsterland did for the C64, and later on, Shadow of the Colossus on PS2. You just look at it and think, jeez, it was capable of doing this the whole time? SotC was the last time video game graphics genuinely impressed me, but Comix Zone and Mayhem were the two that did it first.

    I just beat this game a second ago, took me a few hours of dying and re-starting from level one but, I finally nailed it. Could never beat it when I was a kid. Man, this has to be my favorite game, even more so than any Sonic game on the Genesis. Really cool video dude, it really helped satiate my want for more Comix Zone. Who knows, maybe it'll get a sequel before I grow old and die, haha. Or maybe it'll just remain an awesome-as-hell old-school classic (I think I'd be fine with that.). Anyway, super cool video dude, loved it, cheers~

      Charziken909 I know that. But holy shit, Streets Of Rage 2, my so far favorite 2d beat em up, had lives. Even if the game started you at the beginning of the level, (which can happen, randomly) I still cant even get close to level 3. I got there, once, died on the first enemy.

    • @OdaSwifteye
      @OdaSwifteye 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to see the game completed you'll have to cheat which is very doable even on emulators.
      I would warn you though. You'll still have to get gud to get the good ending.

    • @TaskMaster5
      @TaskMaster5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Oda Swifteye
      You don't need to cheat to beat the game. Not by a long shot. The game's difficulty is often over stated. It's not a cake walk but the game boils down to: 1.) Knowing the optimal route to take in each level 2.) Managing items (The game honestly gives you exactly what you need to progress, it's just a matter of knowing when to use said items) and 3.) Knowing how to optimally deal with certain enemies (Like the female assassins can be insta-killed by Roadkill, Creeps are easy to bait into jumping kicks, etc).
      The game takes only 20-30 minutes tops to beat.
      You also get up to 2 continues. You earn one for beating level 1 and another for beating level 3 I believe.

    • @OdaSwifteye
      @OdaSwifteye 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** I am very familiar with the game. I was speaking to a person who has played the game. Presumably a lot but hasn't gotten to the end. That would be an easy way to the end after getting a lot of failures.
      Besides. I even said that if you have to cheat the way to the end you probably won't be good enough to get the good ending so you have to get good at it eventually.

    funny occurence i had as a kid: in germany (at least in former east germany) we hadn't any arcades. we in the 90's were going to a local toy store, where they had some mega drives and super nintendos for you to play. so i was there all afternoon long. :) we had the rule: if you die once, the next in line can play the game and you had to go to the end of the line.
    and while you had to wait until the person in front of you died, you could have some talks from "gamer to gamer". so it happened that a guy that looked just like sketch (he was younger than him, but looked a lot like him!) was talking to me about the last boss from yoshi's island. he wanted to know how to beat this guy. i told him how he had to do it an he told me to win against the final boss from wario land. i remem ber this so fondly because all of the other older (like 10 to 16 year old guys) were always looking at me like "this girl just happens to be here and doesn't know ho to play". so i thought this was extremely nice from him (maybe just he saw how i played and thought i had some skill :D).
    such great memories! i wished i knew how this guy was called, but i decided to call him sketch after i knew this game.

    Dan, I wish you went more in depth on the music of the game, especially when mentioning Roadkill. Roadkill's music was essentially parts of Comix Zone's OST with vocals such as Into The Zone which was the title screen/main theme of Comix Zone. Also that Drossin himself pretty much voiced all of the male characters including Sketch Turner. Finally, I'm glad you mentioned overall, him working on Sonic 3 & Knuckles as the guy had nothing to do with Sonic 3's soundtrack as he was apparently too busy working on Spinball, which itself had a problem with the title screen music. Great video, nonetheless.

    Comix zone 2 would have to be a game that revolves around the movie adaptation of the first game. I don't know how you could do it but given the 8th that we live in a really well done comix zone 2 would be absolutely insane.

      i played it as a kid on the genesis, it was my favorite solo game, then i played it on some weird 256 sega game cd for PC or something like that... and now i got it on my tablet, ready to be emulated whenever i feel like making paper airplanes

    Comix Zone was always one of my most nostalgic games on the Genesis. My only Genesis was a Nomad, which came a year after this game, so I got a lot of late Genesis releases including Comix Zone. I've never beaten it yet, but I'm still going back and trying to this very day. I also have the Sega Tunes version of the Roadkill soundtrack and it is rad. I lit up the minute I heard some of it in this video.

    I want to comment that in this game (for those of you commenting about its difficulty) there's actually a hard limit on speed runs on this game...if you beat the game too fast, (I don't remember the exact time) it will lock up during the ending sequence, even with emulation and ports. My roommate will regularly hop on this game even today to speedrun it...it's crazy watching him go at it.

    Good review but I really would of mentioned all the puzzle elements. The game is brutally tough but using tricks to destroy barricades/enemies instead of brute force which damages you, using Roadkill to hunt down items for you and so on makes this game MUCH easier. Every other panel feels like a puzzle which when you figure out, makes your next run in that room a breeze so you get that bit further.
    Lots more stuff to enjoy about the game, multiple routes, good/bad endings, packed with secrets/secret moves like holding the attack button to rip a wad of paper from the background and throw it as a plane. The game is short and tough but packed with creativity and well thought out content in every panel.
    I actually felt Viewtiful Joe was a spiritual successor to this game, as in a fan gets pulled into his favorite medium and toys/plays with the things that make that medium special, like Sketch jumping between panels/turning into a superhero and Joe using special movie effects like slow down, zoom in, etc.
    Good review it could of been probably 5 times longer if you listed all of the game's positives :P

    in the late 90s I really wanted to play Quake and convinced my parents to upgrade to a pentium, they came home with a 'gaming' pc that came with a stack of Sega PC games (it did run Quake btw, with all fx turned off lol), Comix Zone was one of the games I had. Back then all pc game controllers sucked balls but luckily, my pc came with a card that let you plug in a genesis/mega drive controller.

    This is definitely in my top 10 games of all time. People whining about how hard it is irks me. It really isn't that hard if you pay attention and actually put some effort into it. I got this game and Gargoyles for my Genesis at the same time. Comix Zone I had beaten within a few days, and I don't think I've ever beaten Gargoyles. I also don't continually go back and play Gargoyles. This game is enjoyable in every aspect, INCLUDING the difficulty. Everything you need to complete the game is given to you. It's a game that has respect for the player, and if there were unlimited lives or continues it wouldn't be as fun to go back and revisit it. Once I mastered the game it gave me more appreciation for it in that I could take in the scenery and realize what a masterpiece it is. I'm definitely not a hardcore gamer, but I've been gaming since I had a 2600 in the 80s and this is one of the most well crafted and tight games I've ever played. No room for anything that isn't absolutely necessary for completion and not for pansy ass weekend warriors who would rather play Pokemon Go or some shit.

    I bloody love Comix Zone. Like you it was one of my last MD games before moving onto PS1. The soundtrack cd is great too even if the lyrics are 90% nonsense. You're right about the difficulty. I think last time I played it I only got to the second stage. it was really difficult to get an extra life too. I guess they figured it was fairly short so they'd ramp up the difficulty to compensate. Nicely done stuff man.

    I remember feeling like such a badass for being able to beat this game. Then I played the re-release in front of my friends a few years back because one of them was frustrated that he couldn't beat it. For some reason, no matter what I did, Mortus would not let me bait him to the bottom of the screen like I always did on the Genesis. Why do you have to make a fool out of me, XBL Arcade?

    I remembered seeing a blurb about this game in entertainment news back in the day and wanted to get it so badly. Unfortunately I never got the chance until a Shipmate(former Navy) gave me a fuckton of roms for a Sega Genesis emulator and Comix Zone was in there. It's certainly Nintendo hard but it's fun when I want a challenge.

    Back in the 90's when the game came out I was out shopping with my parents and we walked past a 'Bargain Store' type place and I went in to find a $10 ' PC Game Demo Collection' in a set of 3 CD's, all up it had 30-40 game demos all up, I bought it and it was the best 'game' I ever purchased, amoungst the titles was Comix Zone, god I loved it. Those were the days. Anybody else ever buy those demo discs?
