I played this character in MvC for years. I finally got to purchase this game this week and was shocked at how brutal it was. It is literally robocop the video game with gore, brutal attacks, and other kinds of death for kids
I'm surprised you didn't mention that not only does Captain Commando feel similar to Final Fight, but in the intro it tells you that the setting is Metro City in the future, which of course is where Mike Haggar was mayor all those years back!
Great retrospective! This was one of my favorite FF-style arcade games, so I was extra-excited to find out the story behind it. One tiny addition - 'Mack The Knife' is a song from the musical 'Threepenny Opera', by Kurt Weill and Bertholt Brecht. It would later become a standard due to the recordings you mentioned - and it later inspired short-lived MacDonald's Spokesman 'Mac Tonight', as well as a classic Far Side Cartoon.
So Captain Commando shortens to Capcom, so would Ninja Commando be Nincom...does that mean when he goes to the bathroom it's a...Nincompoop? ...I'll show myself out.
Captain Commando actually holds special memories for me as the Snes version is the very first rom I ever emulated back in 2000, recommended by a guy who was playing it in my GCSE Computer Science class.
Dude, your quality just skyrocketed. I remember we had a chat on Twitter when you told me about your channel. I've subscribed to it and now revisiting. Just wow! Keep up the good work!
The ol Capn wasn't just on NES boxes. He also appeared on computer game boxes of the time. I remember seeing the character on the Ghosts n Goblins box for the C64.
Mac The Knife goes even further back than those songs - they are referencing the play Three Penny Opera by Bertolt Brech (Alabama Song, originally comes from him and Kurt Weill).
Mack the Knife might be my favourite song of all time, so I will always have a soft spot for the Captain Commando arcade game :) Great video as always!
8:16 Ginzu's alternate name is Sho, not Ninja Commando. The "Commando" moniker are titles, so Baby Head/Hoover is Baby Commando, Mack the Knife/Jennety is Mummy Commando, and Ginzu/Sho is Ninja Commando.
DJ Slopes, thanks so much for doing a CH on Cappy Commandy! I played it in the arcade in Japan when it first came out, and was such a HUGE fan! It was, as you mentioned, from an era where side scrolling beat'em ups were everywhere, and I recall capcom having 3 others circulating arcades at the time Final Fight, King of Dragons, & Knights of the Round. This one really stood out to me, as I had NO idea what to expect at every turn. They went from modern day, to feudal Japan, to prehistoric times, it was CRAZY! Since Cap Commando was really an unknown character, they weren't really held to any specific plot, so it was all quite crazy! When I got back to the states, I told my friends about it, but no one believed me! (pre (consumer) internet)
I played Captain Commando with only two players in the arcade. This was early 1993 so it was kinda an older games. It was in the corner and not really featured because Mortal Kombat was the hot new game. I was still into this and the X-Men beat em up styles in that arcade.
Actually, what if that follow in Section Z *is* Captain Commando? It would explain why he's the selection cursor in dozens of other Capcom games including the console ports of Street Fighter II'.
The heck? "Mack the knife" ? I feel McDonald's also took inspiration from that for their commercials in the mid 80's; "Make it Mac Tonight", advertising their Big Macs featuring a half moon headed mascot wearing sunglasses. Hmm
Thank you for the video. Further confusing me as a kid was Captain Nintendo, whose recorded voice could be heard by calling an 800 number in the late 80s
glad you take some more capcom games i hope you could do a complete history of more capcom titles like 3 wonders, cadillacs and dinosaurs and many others, thanks a lot for keep doing this videos
Apparently she was placed in MVC3 and replaced him from being in it, which sucks as Viper is not popular but Capcom were forcing it to happen (which never works) when people actually wanted Juri from Super SF4. Cap should always be in the Marvel series as he is Capcom's actual superhero!
Awwe i was hoping you'd talk about the rumor that Guy and Maki are related to Captain Commando because Captain Commando takes place in metro city, Captain uses Bushin-Ryu which is Guy and Maki's fighting style, and that he has blonde hair.
What a coincidence. I never knew of this game in arcade or snes I wish I did but I did see it show up on many all time beat 'em up lists. I was on a recent kick of playing arcade games I never played before and I *cough cough* this rom just a few days ago and it was so good I beat it back to back in one sitting.
hhaha, this ad have reached Brazil by the same time and we still make jokes of the ginsu2000 just like you xD Captain comando is the best game of this kind, there will never be anything like playing this on arcade
Imagine if this was in the cinematic universe...done correctly though, actually might not be bad. Commando was one of my favorite capcom characters back in the day on the arcades
Ill add another one to the challenge series its called Hyper Dyne Side Arms. Got it on my 5 1/4 floppy for the c64. Has good ol captain commando on the front.
Would you ever consider doing one of these on the "Golden Tee" series of Arcade games??? I think it'd be an interesting to see how this became one of the most recognizable Arcade games by casual gamer's.
Holy shit this video is so good,I hope this guy works with that translator again,I never knew any of this andI actually read about beat em ups from time to time
When I hear NEC I think Bonk. Captain Commando is one of great Capcom beat 'em ups, in the arcade. I personally thought the SNES port was ok, but flawed.
1:14 "When you think NEC you think Johnny Turbo"hahaha no, when i think NEC i think Hudson and Bomberman and maybe Bonk. also wow Stuart Ashen, first you're Clive Sinclair and now you're a british Captain Commando XD
My hypothesis (I write this like there's any research or insight backing it, but no; it's just my own tangential observation): The soldier in the NES game "Bionic Commando" is Captain Commando. No, hear me out -- 1.) The NES game is the sequel to the arcade game ("Bionic Commando/Bionic Commandos") which starred a character which was renamed 'Super Joe' after the character in the original 'Commando' game (which later split the timeline and became "M.E.R.C.s" and "Wolf of the Battlefield"). 2.) Everyone seems to think that the character in the NES version of "Bionic Commando" is a guy named 'Rad Spencer,' but this is WRONG. The character is only ever referred to in the instruction booklet as "Our brave man" and in the game is only ever referred to as 'Captain.' The name 'Rad Spencer' wasn't introduced until the Game Boy version of 'Bionic Commando,' which while having essentially the same story is a re-imagining and does not take place in the same universe as the original (there is a reference to a 'Ladd' in the original game, but there's no indication that it's the Captain speaking and could just as easily be referring to the helicopter pilot or another solider). 3.) The characters share several physical attributes, such as: Arm-mounted bionic enhancements, spiky/wavy hair, and an affinity for sunglasses. Hair color, physique, and the nature of the bionic upgrades could be due to the passage of time between the games. 4.) The NES game is being told from Super Joe's recollection, meaning that it could be an origin story of sorts for Captain Commando's rise to the level of superhero. Now, granted 'Bionic Commando Re-Armed" and "Bionic Commando 2009" have fleshed out the story a bit more and reaffirmed the 'Rad/Nathan Spencer' identity, but those games made Super Joe a mustache-twirling villain and gave us the 'wife-arm' so F*** THEM AND THEIR MOTHERF***ING WRITERS!
If you ever cover the Kunio games then you might want to split them into different videos. Not sure you could fit them all in one unless you only covered the brawlers. BTW, any chance of a TMNT complete history?
great episode! though I don't believe the Captain actually made it into MVC3, I always used him in MVC1 and sometimes in 2 when I play it but as I recall he didn't make the cut in 3/U3. (unless we're talking some kinda background cameo appearance, anyway)
I'm surprised you guys went through the trouble of translating the story from the Japanese flyer, considering there's an English version of the same flyer with perfectly localized versions of the same story and character bios. flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=thumbs&db=videodb&id=182 The U.S. cabinet was different by the way. www.flyerfever.com/post/98284225328/captain-commando Also, I wouldn't dismiss the similarities between Captain Commando and the original Commando to be a coincidence, considering Commando was a pretty popular game at the time. Had to open my boxed copy of Section Z that I have for "reasons" and yes it does say in the manual "you and Captain Commando". Now I just need to know what the "Z" in Section Z stands for.
Slope..... oh man you evoke so many memories with cc arcade.... look... ive got sonic R on vinyl. I had to sell my decks and all my segas because if hard times.... would you want this rare vinyl in your collection? ~ i did comment on an earlier vid but you never got bk to me??!!

I always thought Megaman was the mascot for Capcom. Looks like I stand corrected. Seriously, why have I not heard about Captain Commando? Like I know he was only in one game but still. Although to be fair, modern Capcom does a pretty bad job using their IP's. Hell, you be lucky to even get a collection or a compilation of those old games. Like at least Megaman has the Legacy collections. Where's a good port of this arcade game?
I played this character in MvC for years. I finally got to purchase this game this week and was shocked at how brutal it was. It is literally robocop the video game with gore, brutal attacks, and other kinds of death for kids

Bee Ill That explains why there is a pick up item of a Mike Haggar statue in the game
Not a whole lotta love for Captain Commando amongst viewers? Views seem slow with this one. What a shame. Great video man!
Great retrospective! This was one of my favorite FF-style arcade games, so I was extra-excited to find out the story behind it.

"When you hear NEC, you think Johnny Turbo!"
You just made both of those things up.
Thank you for this! People usually forget about captain commando fucking classic man
Dang, Slope -- I forgot all about Captain Commando being the official mascot of Capcom back in the days of 8-bit gaming!
"Her classic cap"
"His genetic bandage"
What now?
Yeah seriously, I wonder if its a typo.

I love when you get Larry and Ashens to do readings.
Johnny Turbo haha That was a good one, my friend!
I played Captain Commando with only two players in the arcade. This was early 1993 so it was kinda an older games. It was in the corner and not really featured because Mortal Kombat was the hot new game. I was still into this and the X-Men beat em up styles in that arcade.

Man. I had genuinely forgot about Captain Commando. When you said you were doing a vid on an obscure Capcom game I had a few ideas but not this one.
You showed mvc2 footage when mentioning mvc origins. Mvc2 was not a part of that.
I love the captain commando beat em Up game.. I played it both the arcade version.. and the ps1 port..
Omg, Ashens is Captain Commando! So that's why he hides his face!
Slopes, you are the best at these kind of vids! Hands down, world-class work, my friend.
+icebeam23860 huge thanks bud :D
One of best games in my life, I still playing time by time.
Man i got addicted to these complete history video the back story of some of the games is crazy......you a blessing man lol
Ahhhhhhh dude. Thanks so much :D
The heck?
"Mack the knife" ?
I feel McDonald's also took inspiration from that for their commercials in the mid 80's; "Make it Mac Tonight", advertising their Big Macs featuring a half moon headed mascot wearing sunglasses. Hmm
Yes you're right. McDonalds used their own version of the Bobby Darrin song Mac The Knife in that ad campaign.
I sang mack the knife for a.choir concert once, its a dark song
13:13 No the original Captain Commando wasn't playable in UMVC3, that was the protagonist of the reboot in the series, Nathan Spencer.
Warren Bradford Spencer was actually the main character from Bionic Commando, different series from Capcom.
Nathan Spencer was Bionic Commando
Thank you for the video. Further confusing me as a kid was Captain Nintendo, whose recorded voice could be heard by calling an 800 number in the late 80s
glad you take some more capcom games i hope you could do a complete history of more capcom titles like 3 wonders, cadillacs and dinosaurs and many others, thanks a lot for keep doing this videos
I'm surprised you didn't mention C. Viper from SF4. Her moveset is heavily inspired by Captain Commando.
Apparently she was placed in MVC3 and replaced him from being in it, which sucks as Viper is not popular but Capcom were forcing it to happen (which never works) when people actually wanted Juri from Super SF4.

"Here he is in Marvel VS Capcom Origins" *footage of MVC 2 which is /not/ included in Origins in the background*
Errrrr, yeah.
hhaha, this ad have reached Brazil by the same time and we still make jokes of the ginsu2000 just like you xD
Captain comando is the best game of this kind, there will never be anything like playing this on arcade
My mind is blown, after the Captain Commando/ CAP COM, spelling reveal! Like how could I have missed that all these years!
Woohoo, JimmyHapa shoutout! :) Great video! I always thought the baby in the giant mech was stupid, lol.
Love your videos keep up the good work 👍
I was kind of expecting a mention of Battle Circuit, which felt like a spiritual sequel of sorts.
When I hear capcom the first game that comes to mind is definitely Mega Man
So, Daniel Ibbertson is the alter ego of Larry Bundy Jr, right? :D
we are actually the same person!
I Kneeeew it!
@PastoKage: I think of Daniel Ibbertson and Larry Bundy Jr. as freelance, video-game-nerd versions of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost respectively myself.
He thinks he's fooling us by talking to himself in the comments sections, too, the sly dog.
Great Video as Always, i always wonder was the Oirgin of the Captain was
Ayyyy I see gumshoe. Ace attorney: complete history will come someday. I can hope lol.
captain commando ... cap com, capcom, how did i never see this before
Imagine if this was in the cinematic universe...done correctly though, actually might not be bad. Commando was one of my favorite capcom characters back in the day on the arcades
Capcom for life
Is it me... or did Captain Comando died his hair black and become an attorney?
Don't believe me? Check 13:20
I want him in Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite. :I
totally dug this man, fantastic content!
Ill add another one to the challenge series its called Hyper Dyne Side Arms. Got it on my 5 1/4 floppy for the c64. Has good ol captain commando on the front.
I own two Ginsu knives, and they are as amazing as the infomercials would have you believe.
Would you ever consider doing one of these on the "Golden Tee" series of Arcade games???
I think it'd be an interesting to see how this became one of the most recognizable Arcade games by casual gamer's.
A missile production facility built into the leg...impressive.
Awesome, I think I might have the one to suggest this game title😁
I thought it was going to be about Captain Commando. I was right. YESSSS!
Loved this game.
Captain Commando! He's our... Uh, MANDO!
I think I remember Mack the Knife on the Fallout 3 and 4 soundtrack
I wish I had known about this game before this video
I miss when he was just a lieutenant. Sure, he was less experienced back then, but he had more personality.
Holy shit this video is so good,I hope this guy works with that translator again,I never knew any of this andI actually read about beat em ups from time to time
no captain commando is not playable in UMVC3..that was bionic commando..cheers friend ..always love your time consuming efforts in all of your vids
not playable but it was in as a collectible trading card. technically cyclops and others too are in the game. just not playable.
Fucking love SGR complete history series
Complete History of Fire Pro Wrestling please?
Looks very similar to a TMNT arcade game that I forgot the title of, also Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and Battle Circuit
you mentioned mvc origin but showed mvc2 game play, also he's not playable in mvc3
masenko86 but he does appear as a card and i believe background poster, as he DIDNT say he was playable in mvc3.
When I hear NEC I think Bonk.
Captain Commando is one of great Capcom beat 'em ups, in the arcade. I personally thought the SNES port was ok, but flawed.
Was... was that seriously an offhand "Johnny Turbo" reference? Subscribed, just for that.
Love how Stuart's American accent quickly falls into Irish lol
+The W hahahaha
I've always believe that Ryu is the poster boy of Capcom.
Awesome! ;)
wait Cap Commando isn't in UMVC3, maybe a color for someone, but not playable
Is there anyway to make these guys "MORE" over powered lol
Great video. Captain Commando looks more like TMNT.
Random Gaming Plus Most beat 'em ups from the era looked similiar.
This is easily the best side scrolling platform fighting game of all time - yes, even better than Double Dragon and Metal Slug.
1:14 "When you think NEC you think Johnny Turbo"hahaha no, when i think NEC i think Hudson and Bomberman and maybe Bonk. also wow Stuart Ashen, first you're Clive Sinclair and now you're a british Captain Commando XD
Capcom the king of the side scrolling fighters nobody does em better
I play the Capcom Classics vol 2 version on Xbox, it's good fun.
epic videos
Captain Commando is *not* in UMvC3 unfortunately. He was my main guy in the two previous games...
Pretty sure it should be "hover cradle" not hoover

Fun fact : when I was a kid I thought Captain Commando and Captain America were the same character 😂
Street Fighter and Resident Evil more recently? Resident Evil is about old enough to legally drink.
If you ever cover the Kunio games then you might want to split them into different videos. Not sure you could fit them all in one unless you only covered the brawlers.

Who's Johhny Turbo? Surely you think of PC Genjin, he was NEC's mascot, after all.
I'm surprised you guys went through the trouble of translating the story from the Japanese flyer, considering there's an English version of the same flyer with perfectly localized versions of the same story and character bios.

The U.S. cabinet was different by the way.

Captain wasn't playable or referenced in Marvel 3 and in Project x zone 2 he is a playble solo unit
