  • FBI Smith & Wesson 1076 10mm
On April 11, 1986, eight FBI agents engaged in a rolling gunfight with two armed bank robbers. The bad guys shot and killed FBI Special Agents Jerry L. Dove and Benjamin P. Grogan. In the incident’s aftermath, the FBI concluded that a failure of equipment caused the debacle . . .
Special Agent John Hall, chief of the Firearms Training Unit at the FBI Academy, presented then FBI Director William Sessions the results of a series of ammo tests. Agent Hall’s report concluded that the FBI needed a more effective caliber: 10mm. Director Sessions told Agent Hall, “If you find the right gun, we’ll find the money.”
Smith & Wesson stepped up to the plate with their brand new tough-as-nails 100 percent stainless steel Third Generation Series semi-automatic. In coordination with Agent Hall, the S&W Model 1076 was born. The FBI signed a contract for 9000 pistols over a three year period.
We’re talking about a nine-plus-one capacity, single stack, double/single action semi-automatic pistol chambered in 10mm Auto with a frame mounted decocker and no magazine disconnect. The 4.25″ barrel was stainless steel. It was topped off with a single piece wrap around Xenoy polymer stocks and Novak Combat three dot sights.
This 10mm Model 1076 was intended to be the be-all-end-all of police pistols. A dead nuts reliable handgun that was impervious to the weather, heavy enough that you could kill a man with it, unloaded.
The pistol’s take down was similar to the 1911 that somewhat inspired it. Pull the slide back until the take down notch aligns with the slide stop catch, push the pin out, move the slide forward until it is off the rails, remove the guide rod and recoil spring, and drop out the barrel.
Recoil? We don’t need no stinking recoil. The Model 1076’s weight soaks up the energy that the 10mm Auto dispenses. The trigger is like every other Third Gen Smith: a smooth 12 lbs. trigger pull in double action with a deliciously short, sweet, and crisp single action pull of less than 3 lbs.
When the decocker is engaged, it resets the hammer to the half cock position. So the trigger pull isn’t as long as a traditional Third Gen Smith like a S&W 4566 TSW.
Part of the FBI Contract stipulated that the 1076 lacked a magazine disconnect so it could be fired without a magazine inserted - another shift away from the standard Third Gen layout.
The contract also called for a 15 round magazine.Yes, you read that right: a fifteen round, single stack 10mm Auto magazine for a full size stainless steel pistol. Think about that for a second . . .
You’re a FBI Special Agent working a dope case in the dark gritty streets of Liberty City in Miami. It is 2am and you’re sitting in your unmarked car doing surveillance. You have your 1076 in your hip, two nine round mags on your belt, and a fifteen round mag in the map well on your driver’s side door.
Sounds exciting right? Where exactly do you stick that thing when you get out of your car? Back pocket? Ahhhh the mindset of the late 80s and early 90s. What a time it was. Anyways, back to the main topic on hand . . .
The S&W Model 1076 had a very short life span at the FBI: less than five years. The birth of the .40 S&W in January 17, 1990 sounded the death knell for the 1076. The FBI load for the 10mm: a Federal Federal Cartridge Company load of a 180 grain Sierra JHP bullet, delivering a muzzle velocity of 980 fps. The .40 S&W duplicated that “stopping power” on a 9mm framed pistol with greater capacity to boot.
Smith made precisely 13,805 Model 1076s. Only a handful of non-federal police agencies issued the gun (e.g., the Kentucky State Police). As the FBI doesn’t surplus their guns, actual FBI 1076s are a treasured item.
That said, legit FBI guns got into the wild via Smith & Wesson. The company purchased them from the FBI and sold them to distributors like Lew Horton Distributing Co.
Used model 1076s aren’t cheap. The fifteen round magazines sell for over $100 a piece. Collectors will pay well over a grand for a Roy Jinks (S&W Company Historian) lettered 1076 with FBI provenance. Parts are hard to find, as are the original FBI Safariland Holsters. Worth it? For someone who knows the history and appreciates quality, yes. Of course.

Great video man! Awesome pistol! Back about 2001 I was working for a large gun shop and we had 5 ranges on our main range we where sponsored by Smith & Wesson with a range day. Being a NRA Range officer I was in charge of the affair that weekend. I was able to shoot much of there line and a few from the then new Preformance Shop.
I bought a Colt Delta Elite in 1987 and then another in stainless Gold Cup version in the early '90's. These are pretty much safe queens now as the Glocks get used most in 10. Big fan here too.

Absolutely fantastic Pistol. I really like it. ..... On a side note I'll unfortunately probably never have the pleasure of owning one because of Justin "Sock Boy" Trudeau. He's planning on introducing legislation that bans the purchasing of Handguns. I'm frustrated and sick over it because there's fuck all I can do about it. Enjoy your freedom. The USA the last holdout in the ENTIRE WORLD.

    Just came across this video!
I've been a 10mm fan since the Bren 10, but have never even seen one in the flesh. I picked up a blued Delta Elite in 1988, then traded it for a SS one in early '89. I was lusting over the 1076 since the article in American Rifleman in the early 90's. After the FBI had issues with the initial batch, they sent them back to S&W for repair. Every one of them went through the Performance Center, but at some point, the FBI decided that they didn't want them back, and S&W put them on the used LEO market.
In the summer of 1993, my best friend had just finished Sheriff's Deputy training, and I went with him to Lou's Police Supply in Hialeah to buy his duty and off duty weapon. Sitting in the case amongst the Glocks, Sigs and sundry S&Ws was a 1076 for, IIRC around $350! I was in lust, but alas, couldn't afford it. My friend ended up buying a 4046 and instead of an off duty gun, bought the 1076! I was insanely jealous. A year or so later, after the AWB was enacted, my friend was looking for an AR and not having much luck. I happened to have one I was willing to let go, so we made a deal and the 1076 was part of it. I've owned it ever since.
About 12 years ago, I was considering selling it, so I started poking around the S&W forum, and was contacted by a retired FBI guy who collected 1076s. He had access to some database and was able to determine that my gun was originally issued to an agent in the 91-10 class, which, as best I can tell, was the spring or summer of 1991. He also told me that mine was one number off from the 1076 that Paul Liebenberg of the S&W performance Center used as the "Master" of the 2500 1076s that they processed in early 1993. It's a reliable tack driver, and I'll probably never part with it,

    • @ebomey
      @ebomey  หลายเดือนก่อน

Damn that is an awesome story!!
      I am missing the 1026, 1046 and 1086.
I have to say that the 1076 is definitely the one that is the most cool because of the proof of it's time with the FBI and that the Performance Center went through it, but I have to say that if I was forced to keep only one of mine it would be the 1066 .... Lets just hope that day never comes!
I am a 10mm fan for sure and of all my 10mm pistols I have to say that the 10mm family for S&W are the favorites for sure!
      Thank you!

I bought my 1076 when my agency switched to a Glock 40 cal. I received mine new in the box, when they switched over they let us purchase ours if we wanted. Many Troopers chose not to due to the cost. I gave 600.00 for mine in 2001. It has the State Police seal on it as well as a State Police serial number, and not nearly as desirable as your FBI issue 1076. I’m confident I could recoup my money I have invested, but nothing like yours. Very nice.

    I’d like to find a 1006.

I got very lucky, my 1006 was actually new in the box.
How you could have a pistol like that sitting around all those years and not enjoy it is beyond me.

I have been waiting along time for this video. I watched it last night about 30 minutes after the upload. I liked it but was on my TV. I have the 1006 and the 1066 and made a run at a 1086 one time. I have often thought about getting the 1076 and now you are making me want it more than ever. I am glad you continue to build the 10mm collection. I need to catch up someday. P.S. The white gloves was a funny touch.

LOL ... I needed the gloves to keep the jizz off my hands ...
Well I don't need to tell you to get your hands on as many as you can.

I have a 1076 along with four other 3rd Gen SWs. Where do you find your mags to the 76? I’m heading to a gun show today to look for some. Also having difficulty finding mags for a 4006/4046.

The 10mm mags work in all the 10's ... shoot it has been so long I forget where I got them .... I'm sure they are WAY over priced now!
