Which 2021 Kia K5 is the BEST to BUY - EX or GT-Line?

  • Kia has done it again with the 2021 K5. Following on the fantastic success of the Telluride this K5 is ready to take the midsize sedan segment by storm. Under the hood of the K5 is a 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 that is producing 180HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The K5 is longer, wider, and lower. On the outside you will find the K5's signature "heartbeat" DRL, and provocative styling of the GT-Line pkg. On the inside you will find more interior room because of its longer wheelbase, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and specific GT-Line interior trim. Which 2021 Kia K5 is the BEST to BUY - EX or GT-Line?

    For those considering a purchase, you will be glad to know that KIA makes a quality car. I had 60,000 miles on my first Optima and now have 30,000 miles on my second one and I have never had to repair anything. I just change the oil every 5,000 miles and that's it.

    Not sure if anyone else has commented this, but I test drove a K5 GT-line the other day and it did have the 10.25 inch screen with navigation, a heated steering wheel, and heated seats. What Joe stated made it seem like this wasn’t an option for the GT-line so I wanted people to know it is an option not just for the EX. But loved the video!

    My last Optima was an 07, and it lasted over 230000 miles. Just purchased the K5 EX in glacial white with a “baby blue” interior. Such a nice car. It is actually nicer than my 2016 AUDI A6, I enjoy driving this one better! Keep up the great reviews!

    • @nurzrachit7133
      @nurzrachit7133 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh a baby blue interior? That sounds like something I may need to look into 🤣🤣. Listen.. the K5 caught my attention the first time I saw it while we were on Vacation in Panama City Florida. The car was so ridiculously sharp in the Matte Grey I had to go over and investigate. I literally had no clue at all that it was a KIA, but I was pleasantly surprised, yet not surprised at all at the same moment 🤪. I had, by that time, discovered that the South Korean Auto Giant was doing anything but playing. Not sure if you can make it out, but my identification pic is of my 2019 Hyundai Veloster N. Bought the first one sold in Middle Georgia, Macon.. performance edition and a slick Manual which I prefer, and would purchase again if doing it over. I did get a chance to test out the Dual Clutch model when it was released. My Dealership actually called me when they got one in stock to give me first choice on that one as well 😂😂. They knew me well by this time because I was going to their lot on a regular basis to see the cars and I had made it known that I was going to be interested in it's arrival. Personally I knew the manual was my car because I was raised on three pedals, but my wife didn't want to drive it because of the stick and I felt kinda guilty for leaving her out 🤣😜😂😂. I think things happen the way they do for a reason however, and when I told her I was going to consider trading for the Dual Clutch model so she could get a crack at driving it from time to time, she laughed and said she wouldn't drive it because it was too small for her!! Well I was glad that she let me off the Hook because I had gotten a really nice deal with my N and they had added several thousand dollars to the sticker of the one that I tested. The car I bought in April of 2019 had sit on the lot for one month and the day that I realized it existed was day #31, and it was in my garage by close of business. See 5 Star Hyundai in Macon had been drinking their own Kool-aid and after the special "N" sales rep and self described "Genesis and Hyundai N car performance expert" returned from the initial Veloster N release/Training exposition complete with photos of him shaking hands with Albert Bierman and another one of him commanding the Helm of a race blue model while wearing full race suit and a complete helmet! I have noticed that every picture I have ever seen of someone inside of a fully furnished street car wearing racing gear and helmet, it reminds me of the Giant Black Bear at the circus riding a miniature tricycle 🤣😂😂😂😂!!! They just don't fit inside the car properly, and their heads are insanely large!! 😂😂😂

I have to wait until February for delivery though because of low stock and they are NOT negotiating where I live. $1500 above MSRP and a doc fee of $699! Ohhffph. I also did not opt for the premium package as I really have no need for the sunroof living in the south where it is torching in the summer and A/C is on all of the time and you want to be in the shade lol. To answer your question though, I would choose the GT-Line trim of the K5 over the EX, mostly because I don't like wood trim in the interior of my car. However, no heated seats or rear vents is a major zonk on the GT-Line. FWD anyway. The new GT would ultimately be my preference in the K5 lineup though. New performance info on the GT is now on the Kia site. 5.7 to 60mph, 14.2 in the 1/4 mile, and just shy of .95G on the skidpad, all very respectable in the class. They compare it to a BMW 330I, which it exceeds in every category.

    Greetings y'all's as someone coming from a Ford Focus SEL here. Anything and I mean anything is going to be better than that piece of junk. Okay maybe I'm being a bit harsh because the car is actually pretty good.
    But that dual-clutch transmission is garbage. Ford knew about it apparently for some time and never told anybody. Needless to say while it is driving fairly good now I'm thinking transmission problems later.
    So I kind of came upon the K-5 by accident. So far I've been really impressed with the test drive. For standard automatic it really is pretty snappy. I also took out the E X model which I thought was really nice.
    Coming from a pretty basic trim on my focus this is an upgrade. Mileage probably won't be quite as good. But even mid-30s would be acceptable here. I thought I might miss the paddle shifters as I have in my focus.
    But the sport mode is actually pretty good. Very quick acceleration but it's certainly not going to beat a dual-clutch. However keep in mind something goes wrong with that sealed transmission out of warranty.
    You're going to have yourself a very expensive fix. So this is definitely looking good and considering it has great 10-year Powertrain. Your really not going to beat that anywhere. Great review & has me liking the K5 more here. :)

    It’s odd that the signals are flashing at different rates. I can remember a time when changing out the signal flasher could change the attitude of the whole car. The yellow and blue plastic ones made so many different sounds. The ones that flashed quickly equated to speed, like a Chevelle or Camaro, while the LTD’s and Town Cars equated to sedate dry luxury and flashed verrry slowwwly. I am REALLY GETTING OLD, aren’t I? Sorry, Joe. The EX trim level does NOT allow a customer to option AWD. (7:24) According to KIA's "Build and Price" website AWD is available only on the LXS and GT Line trim levels. In fact, the K5 trim levels are rather complicated and it's easy to be confused. Here's a guide with information from the KIA website.
    () LX ($23,490 MSRP). A rather well equipped FWD base model with a variety of minor options but no major option packages and no AWD.
    () LXS ($24,490 MSRP). The additional $1000 adds a few amenities, bells, and whistles to the LX. More importantly, it adds several driver assistance and safety features. (e.g. Blind spot collision avoidance, rear traffic alert/assistance, and "safe exit assist".) Even more important, however, is that the LXS trim enables optional selection of AWD along with heated front seats for $2100 bringing the MSRP to $28,690. (It also deletes the LX "Idle stop 'n go" feature.)
    () GT-Line ($25,390 MSRP). The additional $900 brings a long list of upgrades, amenities, and additional bells and whistles to the LXS trim. More importantly, it includes access to several major option packages. The Premium Package provides a panoramic sunroof, LED headlights, and upgraded safety features for an additional $1600. That brings the loaded GT-Line FWD to $26,990. Further, it enables selection of both the "Premium Package" combined with AWD for an upcharge of $3700. In effect that means AWD in the GT-Line is a $2100 upcharge over FWD. Finally, if if the "Premium Package" is selected, an additional $800 option (GT-Line Special Edition package) brings features like navigation and upgraded driver assistance. Fully loaded, the GT-Line with the Premium Package and AWD has an MSRP of $29,890.
    () EX (27,990 MSRP). This trim level provides even more upgrades and features to LXS and base GT-Line trim. In addition, it has an optional "Premium Package" of its own that adds a lengthy set of features that exceeds even the GT-Line's "Premium Package" plus its Special Edition package for an upcharge of $3400. That increases the MSRP to $31,990 plus TTL and delivery. At the same time, however, it's FWD only. No AWD option. BTW, the contrary Joe's comment, the "Premium Package" brings bluetooth wireless to the EX.
    () GT ($30,935 MSRP). Available in November this trim substitutes the 2.5L turbo 4 and 7 speed DCT for the engine/drive train of the lower trims. It offers 290 HP and 311 ft lbs of torque. with the same engine found in the forthcoming Sonata "N-Line" as well as in the Genesis G80 base configuration and the KIA Sorento. (Different HP and Torque figures depending on the tune.) And like the lower trims it also has a "Premium Package" (GT1) that largely matches the optional packages of the EX and GT-Line trims for an upcharge of $4000. Like the EX trim it comes only with FWD. Loading the GT with the GT1 package puts the MSRP at $34,950.
    Bottom line? If you want AWD and a relatively comprehensive set of amenities, bells and whistles, go for the GT-Line with its optional packages. Want even more amenities without AWD, go for a fully loaded EX for about $2100 more. Want your cake and performance, too? That's a fully loaded GT with the GT1 option package. But remember that the GT, like the EX comes only in FWD. At an MSRP of $35,000 its specs compare very favorably with the Accord 2.0L Touring, the Camry V6 XSE, and the Mazda6 Signature for several thousand dollars less MSRP. (Real world transaction prices may vary.)
    As noted, the options and trim levels can be very confusing. Best to check KIA's own "Build and Price" website for accurate information rather than relying on KIA dealers' salespeople. Either they don't know the details of various trim levels and option packages or they prefer to guide customers to the configurations they happen to have on their lots.

    • @RaitisRides
      @RaitisRides  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super complicated

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RaitisRides Yup. Stems from several factors. First, KIA has apparently found in their market research that the K5 (as well as the Seltos) appeals to two major groups of consumers. One group finds amenities, gadgets, bells and whistles especially appealing. A largely separate group of potential customers are prepared to sacrifice some of those features in favor of "sporty" looks, performance, and the handling advantages of AWD. Second, though all automakers spec their trim levels to meet specific price points, it's especially critical for KIA that still retains its reputation as a "value" brand priced somewhat below its competition. This division of a single market category into discrete sub-groups enables KIA to broaden a vehicle's overall appeal while containing prices.
      Furthermore, KIA (and to a lesser extent Hyundai) specs their vehicles with lengthy packages of features or wholly different trim levels rather than allowing customers to add or delete long lists of individual options. (A practice common among European premium brands.) Doing so has two effects. First, it eliminates the production complexity (and therefore the cost) of producing a huge range of slightly different vehicles some with a particular feature and some without. Second, of course, it encourages customers to purchase a more expensive trim in order to get one or more particular features they find especially appealing. Want a panoramic sunroof? It's standard on an EX or GT but comes in a package of other features on the GT-Line.
      Finally, it's worth noting that KIA doesn't offer AWD on the highest priced trim, the GT. How come? The same reason that the top trim Camry and Altima don't offer it. Doing so would presumably add $1700 to $2100 to the GT's MSRP, diminishing the K5's "value proposition" compared to its principal rivals. The V6 Camry constitutes only about 5% of all Camry sales. Even for the best selling midsize sedan, adding AWD wouldn't come close to being a profitable addition for the top trim V6 XSE. The same is undoubtedly true of the K5.

    Hey Joe - I recently bought a K5 GT-Line and love it. I also wanted to say that I love your review videos. You're very good at it. Down to earth, very knowledgeable and funny at the same time. My question for you is I noticed in your review video that you had the tail lights doing a sort of strobe thing (you can see it starting at about the 4:30 mark in this video). How did you get it to do that? It looks so cool! I've been trying to figure it out ever since I saw it and I can't find how to do it. Can you please help me out?

    • @smurfguy77
      @smurfguy77 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you made this comment almost a year ago but I can answer your question about the strobe effect on the taillights. The reason they appear to have the strobe effect has to do with the camera they used when filming the segment. When they film the taillights the strobe effect occurs because of the refresh rate of the camera. The refresh rate of your display refers to how many times per second the display is able to draw a new image. This is measured in Hertz (Hz). For example, if your display has a refresh rate of 144Hz, it is refreshing the image 144 times per second. When the video is completed and shown on screen the strobe effect appears. The cameras refresh rate cannot capture the LED lights correctly thus giving the strobe effect. I hope that makes sense. I am a freelance videographer, vídeo/sound editor. I’ve had odd things appear on video because of the refresh rate on my camera. If I film a tv screen I see vertical lines on the tv screen when playing back the video. I’m jealous you have a K5! Do you still love it after having it for almost one year? I have a 2015 Optima EX and I love it! I was in a car accident (not my fault) on 10/20/21. I don’t know if it’s totaled or not. My insurance company won’t know until November 1st 2021. If it’s totaled I’m getting a K5 for,sure.

    The sad part of turbocharged engines is on paper it gets good gas mileage but in real life, not a chance. As for downgrading an engine and strapping a turbo on it to get good gas mileage, your better off just getting a Mazda 6 with the 2.5 or the Camry 2.5 and you can get the same gas mileage as a small turbo motor.

    Just thinking out loud (and as I said in a previous video Joe, I only watch you and Sofian from Redline) - don't get me wrong about this but you guys never ever have "bad" reviews of any car. I understand the concept I think - a dealer (or owner I guess, could happen) lends a car for a review and you kinda need to be "respectful" about it and careful about what you say. But after watching possibly hundreds of reviews I can't recall any sort of conclusion being, even moderately - as required by the business model - "well, this and this was good on this car, but overall this is notthe best car and there's better out there in this very segment". Which is the kind of personal opinion/engagement I would look for from people like you guys who know more about cars than I do, when I'm looking for my next car. I guess my question is, how realistic/feasible would it be for you guys to get more personal in your reviews without hurting any manufacturer's "feelings/image" > leading to fewer videos...which obviously neither you nor us (the subscribers) want. That being said keep the videos coming. they're always instructive (and my wife's still angry about me watching too many of 'em)
