The raw milk thing is actually interesting. I work on a dairy farm so I’ve been drinking raw milk my whole life. Milk bought in a store is pasteurized. Raw milk still has the leftover bacteria and therefore spoils much faster. The milk I drink usually goes bad within 4-5 days. Now why would you drink raw milk then? Different waters is a real thing in Scotland for Whisky as there is a lot of mineral level difference depending on where it was collected. Mind you Scotland has some amazing water full stop right out the tab and I do enjoy bottled sparkling mineral water from this country. You can tell the difference easy regarding waters origination, its a real thing.
I'm not an expert in the field or anything but if anyone is wondering what the thing was about them selling raw milk here's a brief summary. regular milk is put through several processes to make it more uniform in consistency (homogenisation), safe(pasteurisation) and palatable. if you go to the supermarket there is already several different types of milk available, regular whole milk, skimmed and semi skimmed(reduced fat content), organic long life and filtered to name a few that come to mind. raw milk in this context is simply milk that hasn't gone through any processes and is entirely natural. that's not to say its good though, without the pasteurisation process milk contains a lot of germs and stuff that if you are not used too can make you very sick. the germs also speed up the rotting process causing it to go off way quicker that it would if it had been pasteurised. the homogenisation process is designed to bind all the different elements of the milk together and prevent separation, when stored in the fridge. I'm old enough to remember when this wasn't normal in the UK and I remember the milkman delivering milk in the morning that had already started to separate giving you a thicker layer of milk almost like cream at the top of the bottle. as an aside it's where phrases like the cream of the crop comes from, the top bit was the best bit. raw milk may therefore be more natural, which is likely why rich LA millennials think it's a good thing, but it is most assuredly worse and may not even be entirely safe for consumption, a lot of us states and countries around the world even have laws limiting/banning it's sale.
My mom still buys milk raw from a farmer every week and she has to boil it to get it usable (she also gets clotted cream from this process, uses the milk itself mostly for yoghurt making though)
@@markusoliverasagtg9704 Yeah, I can see a culinary reason for raw milk, say for cheesemaking or making yoghurt or the like, just not a direct health reason. Same with the alkaline water trend, a neutral tasting safe to consume alkaline solution can be an amazing tool in the kitchen; for example an alkaline solution would help onions caramelize faster, which is a real issue if you're making French onion soup, or if you want to boil pasta noodles into gaining the flavor and consistency of ramen noodles (which are typically made with sodium bicarbonate). However the health reasons are.... sheesh they're mostly complete bullshit beyond the normal benefits of drinking any kind of potable water (short of super distilled water, which isn't ideal to survive off of).
@@jamesc3953 There's probably ways to prevent contamination, but factory farming standards being what they are in the US I wouldn't trust it unless I milked the teat myself. Even then, maybe cooking it up a bit first just to be safe.
Well to be fair we describe water as "without taste" but as we know that's literally impossible. We just say that because as plain as it is it's a good benchmark when comparing other things to it. But when comparing different waters to other waters there's a definitive difference, so it's not so crazy that he managed to do this.
The sarcastic “thank god” for it being spring water is really funny. You seen some of the water in some of the states, Joey 👀 a lot of the spring water bottles also say it’s from a natural spring, but can sometimes just being purified water that you’d normally just get from running tap water through a filter.
Essentia can be found in regular grocery stores and it’s definitely affordable but it’s definitely charging for a premium product. It’s definitely a solid choice for the rankings.
Those brands that say "It's got electrolytes!" has me flaskbacking to Idiocracy. Also, anyone who's taken a basic chemistry class should be laughing their ass off at "hyper hydrogenated" or "hyper oxygenated".
What set me off, oddly enough, is the third one when he talked about pH levels. Water BY NATURE is meant to be at around 7.0 BECAUSE ITS A NEUTRAL SUBSTANCE. Wanna know what has a pH above 7? Cleaning substances, salt water, baking soda, your friggin bath soap
those are extremely high ph levels, ph levelsup to 9.5 is safe unless you have organ issues.....higher ph levels are also helpful in a bunch of different situations for instance higher ph levels helps you stay hydrated more so than 7. its also good for people who have IBS, also for some people it has helped with people who have acid reflux
A lot of the ones talking about ph levels are talking about having LOW ph levels. The whole "We have low/high ph levels" seems like a sales gimmick and for normal people it typically is. However it can have some medical benefits. For instance I had recurring uric acid kidney stones and beyond reducing certain foods in my diet, drinking low ph water was something that I kept having to do due to them being recurring we had to do everything to lower my bodies ph levels. So yeah, there are genuine reasons to take lower or higher alkaline water but when it comes to just everyday people not having issues it's a gimmick to make the buy.
@@Goldenkitten1 why would taking in lower pH substances improve an acidic issue? If I remember my highschool science correctly lower pH is acidic too, right?
The water that tastes best varies from person to person based on the composition of the saliva. The water most similar to their saliva usually has the best taste. When you drink different brands of water after each other, your mouth’s saliva changes and can cause taste variations. The basic pH (for me anyway) allows me to drink a lot with out getting heartburn from cheaper waters.
So just in case you actually wanted to know, Joey. Hard water has excess levels of magnesium and calcium, its responsible for a lot of buildup on showerheads and water spots on your dishes. It also doesn't work as well to wash with because it doesn't create a foam or lather like water that has been run through a softening system does, so for example you wash your hands and kind of end up feeling like there's a film left behind.
10:16 if it's written Artesian, that just means it comes from a spring that water only comes out of because it's such a deep hole that the surrounding water tables are higher than it after rainfall, so the water leaches out of the ground.
So for those who dont know: Hard water is like straight from the ground without any softening and softening is a process used to remove the minerals in water (like the iron and calcium and such) Normal knowledge for well water drinking chads like me
@@drtyhay not most, literally ALL OF IT. It just gets the tap water from different cities. So that's the only difference with the water brands. It's such a scam.
Electrolytes are the minerals that let you actually process water, without them you’d just piss it straight out in a bit after drinking it. As someone from the south US, raw milk usually means it hasn't been processed and the cream is still in it. It actually tastes EXTREMELY different from regular milk and is delicious. However I bet this store charges like $12+ for a gallon which is too expensive. Should be about $5

As someone who just left their job at a local whole food store (not whole foods lmao) this whole water wars thing is a total reality. We carry a lot of these brands and people really do pay out the ass for water. My favorite was a guy who'd special order 10 cases of Essentia water. Like huge boxes. Norwegian here, DON'T BUY VOSS. It's just tap water from the Voss area, and they haven't even got a particularly good water cleaning facility comparatively to the rest of the country. So it's not even the best tap water from here. You can get really good water from the wild here, from mountain springs and glacier runoffs etc. That stuff hits differently. But Voss is not what it claims to be.
He didn't even buy or drink the thumbnail water. If you are in the mood for glass and it's the only one, Voss is fine. I didn't even know Voss was Norwegian. I guess the price is a consequence of import. Still, it might be degraded for you, but tap water in SoCal depending where, can be limestone, hard, legally ppm of deadly stuff from some wells. It's definitely a more pleasing just water, compared to US based Dasani or Aquafina filtered tap.
“Electrolytes for taste” so…you add salt? All that does is help water get in your cells. Also, I imagine the Jason Mamoa water just tastes like watered down Pocari Sweat
It wasn’t in the video but it was in the thumbnail was CORE brand water. To anyone who reads this I highly recommend you try. No joke I got it one day from my local gas station and was shocked by how good it tasted! Bonus is its pretty reasonably priced in my opinion (at least where I live).
Core water is something I like too. Only reason I ever tried it is because one of the most in shape people I've ever known swore by it so I figured I'd try it.
You should try pouring the bottled waters into verti glasses before you drink them. This will help the water aerate slightly whilst keeping in a relatively similar drinking dispensing profile for an optimal experience.
As far as I know the raw milk is supposed to be used for cheese making. It's typically used in cheeses that age for multiple months to years as it is said to produce a better flavor. However this expensive water is quite laughable. Just buy a dollar gallon of distilled water if you want is so "pure"
As a New Yorker, I’m spoiled by our water where tap + brita filter = neutral refreshing flavor. Not sure what LA tap water is like - is it drinkable as-is or heavily treated?
I've had LA tap water once, and that's only because I was dehydrated and had no other choice. It's not great tasting... not as bad as the tap water back home, which either tastes like pool water or slightly rusty depending how treated it was... but definitely not enjoyable.
I recently tried out Liquid Death-a canned water sourced from the Austrian Alps. Pretty decent, comes in a tall boy (~16 oz) can for $1.49. I'm not big on sparkling waters; it's that nasty bitterness that turns me off.
@@requiemforameme1 The regular Liquid Death isn't carbonated, though they do have a few flavored sparkling waters that are-lime and peach flavors, IIRC
That was the only water to get at the last concert I went to. I'm guessing because of covid so the fountains were turned off. But that Liquid Death was awful, and I live in Texas where it's hot 10 months out of the year 😫
The difference between hard and soft water is the amount of dissolved iones responsible for scale. It also affects how soap acts in water and it’s cleaning efficiency. Basically the softer the water the better.
I feel cheated - I spotted the Icelandic water and was curious about your judgement but you did not even drink it... I tried it while visiting Iceland and I quite liked it - really smooth and soft, easy to drink.
To be fair, raw milk is an actual thing. The milk you buy in the supermarket is UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) treated. But it is most likely a rip-off since raw milk is cheaper than UHT milk, and you can just buy it from farms (at least in Belgium)
dam i was hoping he would do fiji and aqua panna (funny cause theyre on the thumbnail) edit: just realized he tried none of those in the thumbnail XD fail
Nope, mine is so full of minerals it leaves white dust after cooking in kettle, its just not good to drink. so bottled water it is. Joey should try reviewing bottled water in Germany next, we got even more brands, now with added option for or without gas.
Big brain move: buy the most expensive bottle of water, drink it, and then just fill it up from the tap. All of the clout, minimal price, minimal environmental impact.
Wanna learn how you can get this stuff for free? It is an ancient, sacred art that is unknown to the common water snob. First, go into your kitchen and take out a soup pot. Second, go to a river, pick up about 3 fallen tree branches, and take them to the shore from the forest, make sure they are dry branches. Place rocks around in a circle, place the branches inside, and put a camping stove on top. Take the soup pot, and fill it with river water. Place soup pot on top of camping stove, light the branches on fire, let water boil for 30 minutes, let cool, drink water. To shorten this, just boil river water, it's fucking free, and is exactly the same as bottled water.
There's a thing called Boxed Water which looks like a milk carton but it's water for fighting plastic usage.. also water with PH levels are for people that have severe Acid Reflux to balance the acids in the body.
It's funny how you say thank *** for natural spring sourced water. It actually has more lax safety restrictions than the tap does. Though spring tends to get the better flavor if a good source and not in plastic, aluminum.
the PH thing is somewhat talked about here in portugal, because of a specific water brand that has a PH of 9.5, that supposedly has some health benifits
Or in other words. "Water is refreshing. I usually like to ensure that the PH of the water is strictly 7, sometimes 8 if I am feeling a little bit more alkaline-y, anything 6 or below is a no go. I check the acidity with an electronic PH meter just to be sure. You want a nice crisp balanced flavor....."
Milk is actually technically cooked, in a way. Pasteurization is used to kill off bacteria and stuff, and is actually a pretty important step, so if they're selling milk that hasn't had that pretty crucial step, they're probably charging more for what is definitely a much worse product.
btw "raw milk" is actually a more normal thing in more rural countries! (and way less pretentious lmao) i remember 5-7 years ago we used to by fresh milk from one of our neighbours. you just have to remember to boil it all before you even put it away!!! boiling the whole batch makes it safer for consumption as it kills most of the bacteria (hopefully all of it). it is a more natural way of consuming milk. HOWEVER HOWEVER, as it is not put through all the processes supermarket milk does, it's technically not as safe. so people, drink your supermarket milk, it is treated to be safe for you.
Only drink from the tap if you can filter them in the US. There are either lead or military grade fire retardant in most US water supply. In certain places during certain season, toxic algae that can't remove from filtering or boiling.
You know it's all marketing BS when companies pull off this kind of crap: Company A: We put more hydrogen in your water to make it better. Company B: We put more oxygen in your water to make it better. Well... Which direction makes it better? 🤣
If you've been drinking pasteurized milk you have in fact been drinking cooked milk. Pasteurization is a process where the heat and milk up to kill any bacteria, raw milk is actually a really big deal here in the US because it's illegal in many areas to sell it unless it's just for the consumption of your pets. But it doesn't in fact taste better.
So when you brought out the Nirvana water and said "ohh, my favorite band", I paused and said "if when you go to give it a sniff test, you say 'smells like teen spirit', I will go to your patreon and give you 20 bucks" I'm disappointed Joey. IT WAS RIGHT THERE!
Raw milk is actually a big deal in the US. The sale of raw milk is completely prohibited in 20 of the 50 US states, and only 13 states allow it to be sold in retail stores.

@@markusoliverasagtg9704
Yeah, I can see a culinary reason for raw milk, say for cheesemaking or making yoghurt or the like, just not a direct health reason.
Raw milk isn't that bad. I have had it from the vat when I used to work on a farm here in NZ. Its nice, just spoils a bit quicker is all.
@@jamesc3953 That's fresh milk. Who knows how long the raw milk's been sitting for in the mart by the time you purchase it.
@@jamesc3953
There's probably ways to prevent contamination, but factory farming standards being what they are in the US I wouldn't trust it unless I milked the teat myself. Even then, maybe cooking it up a bit first just to be safe.
its just impressive how joey made water into content
He is a water bender now
Well to be fair we describe water as "without taste" but as we know that's literally impossible. We just say that because as plain as it is it's a good benchmark when comparing other things to it. But when comparing different waters to other waters there's a definitive difference, so it's not so crazy that he managed to do this.

The sarcastic “thank god” for it being spring water is really funny. You seen some of the water in some of the states, Joey 👀
a lot of the spring water bottles also say it’s from a natural spring, but can sometimes just being purified water that you’d normally just get from running tap water through a filter.
Slightly basic/acidic water is not harmful in any way, in fact it's quite common for water to have a pH >8.
Just so y'all know I am reading these and enjoy the science side of YT. Thanks for the info I'm too lazy to look up myself

Artesian, not Artisan. It means it is from a source that forces groundwater to the surface by pressure in the underground rock structure.
Right? It's like Noone knows what a well is anymore.
You shoud've arranged some sort of blind taste test. That would've been a hoot.
The best water I've ever tasted comes straight out of a mountain. They stuck a pipe in and it runs all year, full of rich natural minerals
drinking water from an actual waterfall was the best thing. i vouch.

Joey: drinking each bottle and expecting something other than water..
Joey: *disappointed* Yeah, its tastes just like water...
After the sensory deprivation Joey opened a youtube channel reviewing water bottles
10:16 if it's written Artesian, that just means it comes from a spring that water only comes out of because it's such a deep hole that the surrounding water tables are higher than it after rainfall, so the water leaches out of the ground.
So for those who dont know:
Hard water is like straight from the ground without any softening
and softening is a process used to remove the minerals in water (like the iron and calcium and such)
Normal knowledge for well water drinking chads like me
Raw milk is milk that hasn't been pasteurized. Best for making cheese and butter and various dairy products.

Oh, didn’t know it was carbonated. They started selling it at bodegas in NYC recently. $1.49 is cheap, though imma guess it’ll cost like $4 here.
@@requiemforameme1 The regular Liquid Death isn't carbonated, though they do have a few flavored sparkling waters that are-lime and peach flavors, IIRC

The difference between hard and soft water is the amount of dissolved iones responsible for scale. It also affects how soap acts in water and it’s cleaning efficiency. Basically the softer the water the better.

Milk is actually technically cooked, in a way. Pasteurization is used to kill off bacteria and stuff, and is actually a pretty important step, so if they're selling milk that hasn't had that pretty crucial step, they're probably charging more for what is definitely a much worse product.
Joey wearing a Kaiji T-shirt just made my day
btw "raw milk" is actually a more normal thing in more rural countries!
TIL America doesn't sell Fiji Water, but is still worse in every kindof water marketing...
Only drink from the tap if you can filter them in the US. There are either lead or military grade fire retardant in most US water supply. In certain places during certain season, toxic algae that can't remove from filtering or boiling.
You know it's all marketing BS when companies pull off this kind of crap:
Company A: We put more hydrogen in your water to make it better.
