    Still prefer the original line. I love the white eyes with no pupils, like the comic, and the model-kit like all brown weapons and weapon racks (I dig minimally painted figures). I'm more excited by the recently released 1990 movie theater TMNT figures, which makes more sense for more paint detail and articulation. All very fun figures. Great review sir!!

    I think it's a testament to how great the animation and writing was that a high schooler would still want to race home to watch it. The voice acting was superb too! Great review of these totally awesome figures - for their simple shortcomings, we have to keep in mind the other toys being released around that time and also the forward thinking designs of the turtles themselves. Stacked up against the modern iterations, the articulation of the new will always be better. But when you consider the wrist articulation of the older figures, it did add something most figures at the time didn't have. I also think the ingenious weapon storage in their belts was very clever and displays great. Mikey's nunchucks do break a lot, but the plastic just becomes brittle over time, they were very pliable at the time of release.
    You also pointed out something I've missed in all these years of owning TMNT figures, the fact that you could utilize those weapon carriers as racks themselves. I can't believe I missed that detail! My friends and I always just threw them away, thinking they were simply excess plastic (like the HOOK toys, for example). I didn't realize they could be propped up and used to store the awesome weapons. Super 7 is now doing some killer versions of the classic Turtles that I think would be great to compare to your 2012 collection. Also, NECA did some awesome cartoon versions exclusive to Target that really capture the line - would love to hear your thoughts on those.

    Excellent timing. The Ninja Turtles were my first action figures as a child that were mine alone and I had a fairly large collection which I still have in various states of repair (poor Rocksteady still dealing with a Dad repaired arm that doesn't quite stay on). I had Leonardo and Raphael as well as a number of the villains and side characters and I recently picked up a Donatello and Michelangelo to complete my Wave 1 Turtles ironically being my favourites as a child and the only 2 Turtles I never got although I did get an Undercover Donatello when I had trip to hospital as a child.

    Great vid. Was born in 84 so TMNT was my #1 toy line. Have you checked out the cartoon accurate figures by NECA? Also, Super7 is now doing a TMNT line that is inspired by the Playmates line (like they’ve done with MOTU).

    Nice one, Mr. Tony! While I didn't collect the TMNTs, the 1980s cartoon was one of the better shows of the 1980s. April O'Neil was one of the best looking cartoon heroines ever.
    The figures were rather well done. The articulation was limited, but the original & 2012 anniversary sets were far better that the recent set Michael recently reviewed on Retroblasting, which were really wanting in terms of poseability.
    The 34 points of articulation make the 2012 set on par with Toy Biz's Marvel Legends line.

    Excellent, as always Tony. I was in high school as well when the figs were released. I had been reading the comics however before then and was really tempted to buy the figures. The only thing I did buy, and I admit it was a ton of were the Hostess TMNT pies that came out later. Delicious. Wish I had one right now.

    One Saturday morning in 2012, I went toy hunting to the flea market, and I found the four wave 1 turtles with belts and some random weapons, only 2 dollars each one, I had to contain my joyness inside my mind, and just bought them inmediately! That's still my best toy hunt in my life.

    Yes indeed, most lovely.
    I remember when I saw the Classic collection released and thought "I say! A set of TMNT with all bells and whistles of Marvel Legends figures? Yes please!"
    You weren't missing much with Bebop and Rocksteady. Saddens me we never got a Classic Shredder, though. 😢 Oh well.
    I'll say this for the 2012 incarnation toys (seen in the little catalogue), they have the same appeal as the vintage figures, but vastly improved articulation and sculpting. Same scale too. Each turtle is also physically different, Donnie's taller and slimmer, Mikey's shorter and rounder, Leo and Raph about the same height with the latter being more blocky and bulky.
    Nice to see these talked about. Good work, man. 👍

    Even though I had stopped buying toys in my teens, I made an exception for the Turtles line, the cartoon and toys were just too fun. I remember stuffing a shelf with most of the characters they offered, the big Krang and his body was a cool one too. The toy line they released for the movie were really great sculpts, you might want to check them out too. Sadly I sold all them years ago...sigh... P.S. Casey Jones is a must have, he's the best TMNT character, just sayi'n.

  • @TheNightBadger
    @TheNightBadger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I consider the Turtles the last big success of the 'golden age' of toys / morning cartoons. I was a little too old for them when they came out at the time though. I don't know if you know this (or whether you'd moved to Aus yet or not), but the Beeb had banned the word 'Ninja' for kids shows, so they were called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles for years in the UK.

  • @craigcharlesworth1538
    @craigcharlesworth1538 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I bought the classic collection figures but found them a bit disappointing. The articulation felt over-engineered, like many early Marvel Legends, and the head sculpts looked fine at first but why are they all scowling? I wanted at least Michaelangelo to be smiling. When I saw what NECA and S.H. Figurarts had done with their classic looking Turtles the Playmates ones suddenly looked a bit crappy, though there was no way I could afford those.
    In the end I sold them and started collecting the Playmates 2012 line instead. They're more obviously toys designed for kids rather than adult collectors, but the 2012 designs are my favourite version of the Turtles and the line had decent articulation and a really nice assortment of characters.

    Excellent review, sir. I love both these lines, flaws and all and I'm glad to see you have an appreciation for them as well. I really wish Playmates would have continued the Classics line as their price point and their quality were wonderful. I own both Classic sets and can vouch that the Secret of the Ooze set is just as good. Thanks for giving my favorite franchise some love!

    Great review as always Tony, especially from someone with limited first-hand experience with the vintage line. The TMNT figures were undoubtedly influenced heavily by the MOTU line, which fizzled out right when this line started. They did add a little to the 5-POA standard with the inclusion of the forearm swivels, but in an effort to appear more "dynamic" than the somewhat cookie-cutter MOTU poses, the pre-posed sculpts "posed" an issue as you said with displayability. As a kid though, this was largely a moot issue, as you rarely needed the figures to stand on their own during play sessions. One of the other things I think is most notable about the vintage TMNT line is the sheer number of variants, with the bulk of the toy line made up predominantly of wacky costumed figures and equally ridiculous accessories and vehicles. The fact that the toy line never took itself seriously was tonally very different from popular toy franchises of the past, and something that really resonated with children.
