Students at Columbia University and Barnard College in New York have set up dozens of tents to occupy the South Lawn of the campus to create a Gaza Solidarity Encampment. Democracy Now! spoke to some of the student-activists, who say they are occupying the space, despite the administration's threats of suspension and disciplinary action, as part of a demand that the Ivy League school divest from companies and institutions that profit from Israeli occupation. "It seems like the repression is only getting worse and worse," says Maryam Alwan, a student-activist with Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine.

Imagine the change in tone if every single protester was individually and collectively held responsible for the actions taken by their fellow protesters. Universities should be an institution of education. They should not be associated with any corporations or any foreign countries. The soul purpose should be based on teaching and intellectual debates depending on subjects.

In response to these US campuses protests Sydney has been energised, yesterday's Sunday rally was gigantic and i myself have now made the decision to be ramping up my protests and will be seeking to devote at least two or three whole evenings a week to internet research and activism, as well as writing to Australian politicians. This movement from now on will just get bigger and bigger and bigger.

Columbia was my dream school 23 years ago and I went to visit before accepting my acceptance and the vibes on campus were so bad that I changed my mind within 5 seconds of being there. Glad to know my instincts were on point.

I had to take to the main stream media that it was a solidarity movement and anti-war movement. Its not something of minor detail that they are using rhetorical statements to divide and reframe this movement into a religious conflict
These "students" appear to be so unhappy here, in the US. Why don't they go back to their countries? Why are we putting up with this sort of behavior. The right to protest is granted to American Citizens. You have the right to protest, as long as it does not prevent others to go about their business without being inconvenienced by these protesters. Why is it so hard to pass a law to prevent this sort of behavior, and to stop these people from blocking roads, etc...?
Why is it so hard to understand that decent people feel compelled to take a stand against genocide, ethnic cleansing and starvation . Its called humanity! Something the government does not have! Thankfully the comment section stands with the students!
