  • In this video I will show you the proper tools, materials, and procedures for installing the scratch and brown coats. I will be concentrating on the 3-coat stucco system. We will start off with the type of tools that should be purchased and are widely used in the industry. From there I will show you the proper materials to purchase to complete your project. After we are completed with that we will move on with the application of each coat.
    I will provide animated illustrations that go into detail of how and why certain materials work and how they are used in everyday use. Some of my animated illustrations will try and expose the proper way the process should be done.
    Once we are finished with the scratch and brown installation I will provide a quick recap of my procedures, then follow up with some funny bloopers.

    Hi lionfishtriger, you can apply a new stucco color coat to an existing stucco house as long as it is power washed prior to the application to remove any mud splash or debris. If your existing stucco has been painted you will either need to sandblast the paint off of the walls or apply a high quality bonder to the paint prior to the application of the new color coat keeping in mind that the bonder is only as good as the paint it is adhering to. If your existing stucco is clean, free of paint and you are considering keeping the same texture you may want to consider having it fog coated. Fog coating is less expensive than restuccoing. Fog coat will absorb into the existing color coat, whether you keep the same color or desire changing the color, unlike paint that only sets on top and doesn’t absorb into the stucco. Hope this explanation has helped you.

    As for applying a bonding agent over a cleaned painted surface, in areas with freezing temperatures it will hold up well.
    Due to moisture penetrating the new stucco untill it reaches the paint barrier.
    There it will seperate when freezing takes place.
    As for the base coat mortar, today there are numerous different types of premixed cement based mortar.
    Whereas in past years there was simply portland cement, hydrated lime, and sand used in the mixing of mortar for both laying block or brick, and plastering over masonry or wire lath.
    Using a darby on the base coat is more important with wire lath than with block walls, and with a smooth sand finish than with a texture finish.
    Assuming of coarse care is used to apply the mortar evenly.
    This is one of the better videos.
    The man doing the work is in fact a plasterer, not just a BSer like some of the others seen on TH-cam.

      Typo, in that i meant to say the bonding agent wont work well where freezing temperatures are involved.

    Hey there. just watching your videos because I'm nerdy like that. I am a 20 year stucco plasterer. I love your technique and it is clean work. Where I live, we spread our walls left to right. I know in the UK they spread right to left like you do. When they plaster interior walls they go left to right though. I've always wondered why the difference. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it

      Back in the early 70’s when I first started in the stucco/plastering industry that is the way the journeyman plasters were doing it, so I really don’t know anything different nor do I know why it was done that way. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

      @@eddaher5682 No problem. That is my working theory anyways. We do as we were taught. Just trying to see if there is something I'm missing. I have a syrian immigrant who is a plasterer and it is hard to get him used to going left to right with us as they go right to left as well. I find it interesting

    Can I apply another stucco color layer to old stucco? I want to change the color of the stucco in my house... but don’t know if the new stucco color will stick to the old stucco... current stucco finish texture it’s sanded

    • @brad6523
      @brad6523 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes it will. You need to pressure wash the house and then apply a bonding agent like weldcrete. If you are doing a dark color you should higher a professional though. Very easy to screw up

      Hello and great job explaining all from start to finish. My question is about your material being used. You used plastic cement,sand and water as your base coats. Can you use lime and sand as your finish coat or won’t that work? Or are you better off using one of those color coat packs with its own base coat mixed in all together?
      I am building a garage/workshop soon and wanted to apply a plaster/stucco finish but wasn’t sure what to use as the finish coat. I would prefer lime but not sure if hydraulic lime can be used alone with only sand as a finish coat. Can you straighten me out? I am a carpenter, not a plasterer by the way.
      Thanks so much for explaining things.

    • @eddaher5682
      @eddaher5682  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@gizmobently Thank you for your kind words. It is possible to only use lime and silica sand for the finish coat as long as it’s a very thin coat. It might not have the tensile strength to stop checking (fine cracks) if it is 1/16" or thicker. Since the pre-mixed color coat bags include the right proportions of lime, white cement, and silica sand, I would suggest using them. These come in several different grades sizes of silica sand.
