Have you ever made eggplant bacon? You make it exactly like this, but just use eggplant instead of tempeh. It is light and crispy like sad bacon. Try it!
January 22, 2019 and I am still watching you videos. This was so helpful to me as I have to go glutenfree and needed to learn to make this. I love and miss ya Jill
Oh Miss Jill I am so excited! So many people told me " I am sure you will not like tempeh - it is so gross". They are soooooo wrong. OK so this is what I did...I went ahead a cut a few pieces off the slab and cooked it sorta like the package said. I only used 1/8th t of olive oil & some Tamari and cooked it on top of the stove. While that was cooking I watched this video again & steamed the rest in pressure cooker & now it is marinating in the refrig for tomorrow morning & I will be cooking on my old fashion (LOL) griddle! Now I am positive it will be even better than what I tasted today & with no oil!! Thank you for the video. Going all out starting today with WFPB!!! Thank you for being the sharing you! ((Hugs))
I just shared this video with my best friend. He's not vegan or into cooking, but I had to share your beautiful family with him. The love you have for each other is so obvious, and it's wonderful how you're so playful. It blasts my heart open. You all are a shining ball of light. Much love ❤️
+Shannon Cunningham THANK YOU for sharing this video and for all your kindness & support. (((BIG HUG))) You should join me on my weekly live broadcasts on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm central time. go here to join: HangWith.com/user/JillMcKeever
Thanks for the vid and for the OIL FREE recipe. I will be switching to vegan diet after finishing 30 day juice fast. Can't believe how many vegan recipes on TH-cam have so much unhealthy oil. And great to see a mom so loving and funny around her husband and kids. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Edward! Holler anytime you have questions about cooking or a recipe. I'm online MOnday through Friday. Saturday mornings, 10am central time, I put on a live cooking demostration here on this channel. Make sure you're subscribed to the channel and you've clicked on the bell icon to turn on the notifications. When I go live, you'll get either an email or a text message (depending on how you've got your notifications set up).
We've been blowing through the Rockin Broccoli Salad and the grocery stores can't keep my tempah bacon habit up. I had to go Breaking Bad and turn my kitchen into a tempah bacon lab. Check it. HERE'S ALL YOU NEED for the MARINADE 1/4 cup low-sodium tamari 1 tablespoons teriyaki sauce 3 tablespoons maple syrup 2 teaspoons liquid smoke, (I used Pecan) 1 garlic clove, crushed If you are overwhelmed with the desire to support my work in inspiring others to eat plant-based, become my patron via this PATREON link: www.patreon.com/jillmckeever
I'm new to your channel, since discovering you I have purchased a Instant pot, ordered soy curls, yum... I can't wait to make this. I love your family also So precious! Bless you
I literally just gave a thumbs up because she said "You better give this a thumbs up! I did this for YOU!" hahaha :) I'll try the recipe too. I have a brick of tempeh in the fridge that I haven't used. It'll be my first time using tempeh.
Hi Jill🙃 I'm an Austinite too. You are awesome make me laugh and smile and I love your videos! Maybe our paths will cross someday at wheatsville's and we can have a Sammie with carrots together and a sparkling kombucha and carrot cake. Haha. So I've been making tempeh bacon too and I'm seriously addicted. I marinate, don't steam, but cook in my toaster oven using the broiler for about 30 minutes with one flip at 15 mins and a quick refresh with the marinade. I love it crunchy!
+Suzanne Ulicny Ward Hi Suzanne! I would love to meet you for lunch at Wheatsville! I always order the Very Veggie then wrestle with my urge to buy the Chai cake. Nom nom nom What temperature do you use to bake the tempeh? I have a Breville Smart Oven (love that workhorse) I could easily bake a pan of tempeh in it.
Made this for the first time today, & it's deelish - thanks!! Very easy to make too. I'm happy to have an easy tempeh bacon recipe. Even gave a slice to my dog, and he begged for more - LOL!!
I think hickory smoke and watered down tamari and maple syrup (or no maple syrup) would taste much more bacony. Plus, you could try using a tea of marjoram and savory instead of water to dilute the tamari.
Love your channel! It's inspiring and funny! I don't have a griddle. Would you bake or pan "fry" the bacon? I'm thinking bake 'em. That's what I do with tofu bacon.
I've successfully baked tempeh bacon in my Breville smart oven plenty of times. Pan would work, I wouldn't want to stand there and work in small batches.
This is soooooo goooood!!! Even my son loved it! I did it on convection in my toaster and the garlic was the best part! My tempeh completely fell apart, no problem though. I had enough marinade left over for coconut bacon!!!! I'm gonna continue on my plant based journey with a happy belly!
Okay, please don't hate me for mentioning this...I've had a hard time finding Tempe here locally, so I've made Miyoko Schinners "believable bacon" which I make without frying in oil (use nonstick skillet) She has a you tube video show casiing it...uses only 4 ingredients: pressed, sliced tofu, soy sauce, liquid smoke, and nutritional yeast.... We love it! I bet your ingredients would be good with just pressed, sliced tofu too. (refrigerated tofu makes the best results since it is firmer). I'm trying it as soon as I have some of the right tofu in the house!
I zip those marinade bags closed with a straw tucked in the corner, then suck the air out and quick-zip the bag shut while pulling out the straw (while still sucking on the straw). Poor mans' vacuum sealer!
I’m coming back to you Teresa! Right after rollerskating tonight, around 7 PM central time, I’m jumping on a live chat session here on TH-cam to talk about the ideas I have going forward. I’m ready to get to work helping others through workshops and community.
when you buy tempeh bacon, how do you crisp it up? Can I do it in the Breville air fryer? Should I bake it? Help, I bought some and not sure how to cook it. Next time I will make your recipe, probably cheaper and better. I don't have a griddler, if I make this recipe, how should I cook it?
My family prefers the ready made tempeh bacon when it has been baked or air fried to the point it’s dry. We’ve given up trying to make it crunchy because it’s easy to burn. We don’t eat it alone. It’s better crumbled onto salads or slipped into a lettuce and tomato sandwich.
Safe Breville strategy: whatever mode you use, set the temp around 350f and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Afterward, watch it by the minute until it’s dried out. Since you’re learning to work with it, have a strip to nibble on as you go to determine your preference.
I have done king oyster mushroom slabs and the liquid smoke, maple syrup and smoky paprika seemed to be the key to its bacony flavor. Also added some pepper but can't recall if black or white.
Thank you! They turned out great! Hubbs Harry can't wait. I told him that we were making the NoBLT's with them! Yummy. Oh, what I did end up doing was grilled them on my cast iron griddle - like I used to cook real bacon years ago. It worked great, but you are right, I had to watch them, cause they will burn easy.
I didn't know that's how you make granola crispy. Do you have a video on making granola without making it too sweet and no oil, of course???? Great video 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Where are you, Jill? We miss you and your goofy family. Hope everything's ok. I'm having to go back and run your old videos to get my Jill fix. Be well, all. Lynn
I've got my head down writing a cookbook ALL about soy curls. I'm almost finished with my part. It's going to the cookbook designer in two weeks. I'll be back to my normal video production schedule after that :D
If anyone here has tried Whole Foods' new TTLA sandwich, you WILL want to learn to make the tempeh bacon yo'self! OMG ... it is sooooo good! Thanks Jill-ster!
I went to Whole Foods YESTERDAY to try the TTLA. It’s good. However, here in Austin, TX, we have a local veg restaurant that makes a WANNA BLT. The WANNA BLT is so awesome, no one talks while they’re eating it, they only grunt, nom and mumble “yum.” I bought an extra TTLA and picked up a couple of WANNA BLTS to bring home to the family. We turned on the cameras and filmed a vegan BLT challenge. We’re still editing the clips; I hope to have it posted on Monday. :D
And here in Naples FL we have TRUE FOOD kitchen which also features a "TLT"...they do theirs on charred bread and it adds smokiness to the entire experience....and you know what I think? I think Whole Foods is trying to "riff" off of the True Food TLT! and that's ok with me! more options! heh!
+Simple Daily Recipes Marinating for 24 hours softens it plenty without having to steam it....because I forgot about mine too and marinated it extra long! :D
Thank you Gerry! Let me know how the tempeh bacon turns out for you :D Be watchful for burning. That sugary maple syrup can burn on the tempeh before the tempeh has a chance to get crunchy. Keep an eye on it and adjust the heat if necessary.
Yea! I'm all for lunch at wheatsville😀. I think you've got a busier life with skiddles and your You tube wonderfulness...just let me know a great day for you and I'll blow by all the blue bonnets out here in driftwood and come join you!! I'm very spontaneous too...so if you get an inspiration to connect, let me know. How do we do that without giving all your "followers" private info? Hmmm. Oh...broilers at 450 and keep a watchful eye. They come out very crunchy...better have good teeth. I also spray Braggs aminos at the 15 min mark. You are such a great family! And thanks for the tempeh bacon. I have been looking for a recipe for veg bacon and here it is 👍
Love it. will try the recipe. Love to see the family's reactions to the recipes. Great fun!
Love your insta pot recipes. Just got one and you have taught me a lot and how to use it for so many things
Made this today. Oh my... Was this so delicious. It was hard to have self control not eating the whole thing. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

Looks yummy. I don't have a gridler - can I bake it on a stone in the oven?
LOVE your IP recipes!
This video is so perfectly timed for me, have some tempeh so going to do this tonight
glrendon81 AWESOME. Let me know how it turns out for you.
Trying this one
Love your videos! !!
I think hickory smoke and watered down tamari and maple syrup (or no maple syrup) would taste much more bacony. Plus, you could try using a tea of marjoram and savory instead of water to dilute the tamari.
I'm wondering if instead of steaming it, I could smoke it in my stovetop smoker, then marinade and grill it...what do you think?
I think it looks cooked the way it should be for bacon. The last time I looked, bacon is brown. Looks delicious! !!
Love your channel! It's inspiring and funny! I don't have a griddle. Would you bake or pan "fry" the bacon? I'm thinking bake 'em. That's what I do with tofu bacon.

This popped up on my feed today. I am happy for your new life making art, but gosh I so miss your cooking videos!! You are very missed. xo

How can you steam the tempe if you do not have the machine that you did?
Whenever you were doubting yourself I was literally saying out loud “NO GIRL THAT LOOKS GOOD!!!”
You are so funny! Glad I discovered your channel 😄

Any ideas for a replacement for the Teriyaki sauce? I don't have any and I want to make this...ideas?
I have done king oyster mushroom slabs and the liquid smoke, maple syrup and smoky paprika seemed to be the key to its bacony flavor. Also added some pepper but can't recall if black or white.
Can you recall where you got the grill
I own the Cuisinart 5-in-1 Griddler :D
simpledailyrecipes.com/Cuisinart-5-in-1-Griddler
Can I broil the temp bacon in the oven? I don't have a griddler!! ;( I am making this right now!!!!
I would bake them; roasting would be too hot and the tempeh is easy to burn with the maple syrup in its marinade. Let me know how yours turns out.
Thank you! They turned out great! Hubbs Harry can't wait. I told him that we were making the NoBLT's with them! Yummy. I love that you're from Texas! Can be hard being from Texas and vegan! Especially the southern of Texas you go!
Maggie is my favorite part of this video. I have a tiny bite person in my house too. She is so cute.
I didn't know that's how you make granola crispy. Do you have a video on making granola without making it too sweet and no oil, of course???? Great video 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I have an oil-free, mildly sweet granola recipe but not on video. Thank you for letting me know I should make one. :D
this is why i prefer eggplant bacon. They pieces are bigger and more bacon-like. :) It's also a good way to introduce eggplant to your family's diet.
Can you tell me what brand of grill you were using?
Here's my Amazon link to learn more about it: simpledailyrecipes.com/Cuisinart-5-in-1-Griddler
Wonderful!🙏🌱
Also...have you ever eaten at Bouldin's on 1st? They are all veggie restaurant and food has been pretty swell😋
+Suzanne Ulicny Ward OH yes, as a family, Bouldin is our go-to spot when we eat out.

I finally successfully grew several slaps of tempeh. I will have to try this recipe with some.
Let me know how it works out, Azannah :D
I've learned I need to slice it thinner! To thick and it was just soggy. Frying might make a difference but, nah staying away from the oil.
I don't have a instant pot so how about I cook the tempeh??
I've marinated tempeh without steaming it and it works just fine. :)
+nellievance That's good to know. Thank you for throwing in here. :D

I like this video
I love that fakin bacon too but you are right, this way is so much less expensive.
Is there a reason you call it tempah instead of tempeh?
+Patty Cormier That's a typo. I was testing your foodie knowledge 😉
Fun vid!!
Ronnette Mckinnis THANK YOU for watching!
indonesian java bacon tempeh is very very..delicous...
That sounds good!
you're so funny.... :D
i use to eat tempe with chili souce... or sambal ( it's indonesian traditional chilli souce..)
THank you!
I wonder how it would be if I used coconut bacon instead
You'll have to let me know how that turns out. :D
Please, please, please make the rice paper bacon. Your family is adorable!
How do I make rice paper bacon?
instantly subscribed. so funny you're like the vegan aunt I never had!
I use this with tofu instead and bake the slices. Even my omni kids love it, in fact, I have to hide it!

Lindsay Steaming removes the bitter flavor some people taste.
HUSBAND ABUSE!!!....LOL...You all are soo cute...I will be trying this recipe. THANKS!
lmao! I love you and your family!
Dang I just got some tempeh for the first time and I don't have a steamer or any of those ingredients. Haha oh well. ;)
Team Broccoli Tempeh keeps very well in the freezer until you're ready to use it.
But plant's have feelings tho....😂😂
www.veganer.nu. Then search rice paper bacon. It's pan fried but I bet there is a way around that, fingers crossed.
THANK YOU! Anytime I come across fried recipes, I convert them to oven recipes.

so silly lol
