  • Welcome to the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania where Saint Vincent College and Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve are located! This camera showcases the many bird species that live in the broad collection of wild areas that surround our college's campus. It is attached to the rear of the Learning Center Barn at Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve (WPNR). It is maintained jointly by the Department of Biological Sciences, WPNR, and PixCams, Inc. We are able to point the camera at different feeding stations, so your view may change from time to time.
We are excited to share that the audio feed from this camera is linked to the Bird Weather system, which automatically analyzes bird sounds and identifies them in real time. Daily statistics for how many species are being detected can be found here: app.birdweather.com/stations/266 . In June 2022, more than 56 species were detected. The three most common were the American Robin, Northern Cardinal, and House Finch. You will see that non-birds sounds are also recognized. Since WPNR is near a regional airport, we do get a large number of "engine" detections.
The WPNR (www.wpnr.org) is a 50 acre nature reserve adjacent to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The Reserve includes native landscapes, trails, meadows, gardens, Nature Explore Certified play spaces, pond, wetlands, and more! The property is open to the public for recreation, conservation, and education. Find your way there with this street address: 744 Walzer Way Latrobe, PA 15650.
Saint Vincent College (www.stvincent.edu) is an educational community rooted in the tradition of the Catholic faith, the heritage of Benedictine monasticism and the love of values inherent in the liberal approach to life and learning. The college enrolls approximately 1,500 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students. According to the college mission statement, the programs, activities and encounters that make up student life at Saint Vincent encourage the intellectual gifts, professional aptitudes and personal aspirations of students to mature harmoniously. This bird feeder camera is part of that! Students develop a love for nature and conservation by viewing our bird and maintaining this camera; and they learn to interact with others through the integrated chat feature here on TH-cam.
Saint Vincent's Department of Biological Sciences is where many of our students train to identify and study birds. We offer degrees in Biology, Environmental Science, and Health Science. Dr. Jim Kellam teaches Ornithology, Wildlife Biology, and Conservation Biology courses; Dr. Michelle Duennes teaches Ecology, Evolution, and Invertebrate Zoology courses; and Dr. Pete Smyntek teaches Earth Systems Science. We all supervise numerous undergraduate research projects each year, some of which utilize the data collected from this bird feeder camera.
If you interact with us through TH-cam's chat feature, you may be talking with Dr. Kellam or his ornithology students. We love to respond to questions!
