This, to me, is Kon's masterpiece. Being a film graduate, I highly admire the editing in this feature along with that fantastic soundtrack and script. The whole thing is directed pretty much like a live action feature, but happens to be an anime. It's just a shame that I could never get any of my instructors to watch it, they thought it would be Pokemon and Sailor Moon all over again. :(
Agreed. A masterpiece. Even watching this extract has me in tears (for Kon-sama, perhaps, as much as for Chiyoko?). A shame, a *crying* shame that your instructors has such closed minds. I encourage you to make up for that deficit, some day, somehow. & if you have any films of your own for me to see, plz send me links here, kudasai. Arigatou gozaimasu!
I think that the painting of Chiyoko and this letter prove that the artist loved her back as much as she did. When she cries "wait" when she's on the moon and finds the painting that's when I cried as well, she has fought so hard to see the painter and he just disappears in the painting. It was so heartbreaking. I hope that Chiyoko finally finds him in the afterlife. Satoshi Kon is an absolute wondrous creator in his films, it's a shame he died early. 😢😔
One of my favorite scenes of all-time ever! Everything leads up to this helluva pay-off of a scene... the editing and transitions, the dialogue, music, it's all absolutely insane and heart-wrenching. I can't help but tear up every time! I adore that final shot too... the snowy hills that zoom out to resemble the clouds of the Earth as she shouts "I'll come to you wherever I must go!"
its basically a blend of all the moments and movies she filmed in the past that showcase her endless search for this man, except she is so old now that her recollection of them is less orderly and more of an overlapping supercut.
It’s hinted in the movie that it unlocks the box where he keeps paint. He didn’t mean it literally though. When he said it’s the key to the most important thing, he meant peace ☮️ . The end of the war. The key that lets him go home to finish his painting in Hokkaido.

Such a wonderful, magnificent movie, it tears your heart apart.
This scene is so lyrical, it's just perfect.
The way the music ramps up to include a bit of the leitmotif at 1:35 and 5:39 is so, so good! This whole scene is a masterpiece.
wonderful observation, I thought the same thing!
Everything, everything about this movie is so brilliant

If ever someone were to ask me what cinema is, I'll probably answer "motion". If they asked me to elaborate, I'd just show them this scene.

beyond movies, time periods and stories, she ran to the man she loves.

but yes the theme of this scene is the theme of her life; the thing that kept her making movies and progressing in life: the chase
Je veux juste savoir, c'était la clé de quoi ? Il a dit que c'est la clé du bien le plus précieux au monde, qu'est ce qu'il voulait dire ?
