    Damn, I do like the old "long toms". Still has elements of its predecessor, Martini Henry, while moving into a modern bolt-action repeater, yet with features that are somewhere between the two, such as volley sights and magazine cut-off.

    • @nebiyuesayas5600
      @nebiyuesayas5600 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Side note, the first Lee Enfields were modified Lee Metfords updated with Enfield barrels (for smokeless powder), so that would make the Martini the grand-predecessor of the Mk. 1
      I also believe some later Lee Enfields (specifically really early models like this) did retain some of these features like the volley sights, since it wasn't until WW1 that people realized those additions didn't work for trench warfare.

    I think Bloke wouldn't like you "palming" the charging handle. He's quite adamant about period manuals saying that you should hold the charging handle between thumb and index finger and the advantages of such handling. If you have to use so much force that the using the palm seems necessary, that indicates that something isn't right... or so I was told ;-)
    Anyway... Another great video Mae, thank you.

    • @SlavicCelery
      @SlavicCelery 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bloke also insists there are no practical issues with Lee Enfield pattern rifles and there's no primary extraction on Mausers. So take what he says with a grain of salt.

      @@SlavicCelery if there's absolutely no record of such issues from its extensive use by armies of different countries and then the moment the rifles get surplused to civilians, suddenly the rifles start having issues they never had before, there's very little doubt for any smart person, that the cause of these issues is what is in IT referred to as "the component between the keyboard and the chair".

    • @SlavicCelery
      @SlavicCelery 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Daddo22 Suddenly surplus'd weapons tend to be in better condition due to rework at an arsenal level. See also: French rifles "dropped once" bullshit. Unless it's like an African cache that gets dropped on the USA.
      A bunch of reworked rifles, of the survivors...isn't an all encompassing view of the weapons.
      Also, I've seen tons of issues with various Lee rifles. And not just the beaten up ones.

      My first instinct was you could've re-barreled and re-habbed it. Realistically, though, that wouldn't be cost-effective. These aren't scarce enough that I'd have done any different in your position, even though it still hurts a little bit to see a piece of history's run end.
      Also doesn't help that they weren't terribly accurate to begin with. Long and Short Enfields have great actions, but barrel concentricity didn't seem to be a huge priority at the factory.

    Lovely rifle and always outstanding as ever Mae. I prefer a longer barrel on a rifle, the 16" "standard" these days is good for closer engagements. Though growing up hunting I like a nice 20"-24" preferably chambered in 7mm rem mag. I used to have a 7mm rem ultra mag for antelope long shots, but that was a heck of a barrel burner. July 1st Washington State gets a 10 round mag limit just in time for Independence Day, I daresay that is an excuse for a Barrett?

    These were used by both British and American troops in the film 55 Days at Peking. In actuality, the US Marines were armed with M1895 Lee Navy rifles during the Boxer Rebellion, but the production crew understably didn't have such rifles to use. The two rifles looked vaguely similar, anyways.
    A similar problem would arise when John Milius directed his 1975 film The Wind and the Lion, so the production crew compromised by using the Krag-Jorgensen Model 1896.

      This specific rifle? Must be haunted and crave blood.. Instead of putting up a wiki link, show the actual citation(s). Then someone can actually read the original story instead of a page lacking true information, or the good old; 404: the page you are looking for does not exist.
