@Insta360 you need to take care of your existing users with broken lenses in the previous generation 360 cameras who are suffering the nonexistent service and whatever service is is available, that costs exorbitant money.
NOTICE - he doesnt actually USE the lens guards - since they degrade the footage - NOTICE - he is NOT calling it action CAM - because you CAN NOT use this for ANYTHING ACTION related or you WILL SCRATCH THE LENS. If you scratch the lens - its $99 (at least it was for the X2 - the 3 TIMES I HAD TO REPLACE IT) - Im sure the X4 is more expensive to repair - AND you have to WAIT at least 8 WEEKS - IF - they get back to you within 2 week of the initial email - which they wont - so its more like 12 WEEKS!
Buyer beware on all these videos - this is TH-camr influencer at its HIGHEST - the embargo has lifted - there are 50 videos out there about this "ACTION CAMERA" - and what NONE OF THEM TELL YOU - is that these lenses are DELICATE - like you WILL SCRATCH the lens in snow - or on a bike trail - or a dropping it on a table - and then - it will cost (at least it did on previous models) $99 to fix it - or all your footage will have a smudge from the scratch. Also - you have to write an email to them explaining it - then wait 4 weeks for a reply - then fill out a form and pay the $99 plus shipping - to CHINA - then - wait another 4 weeks - until you get our camera back.....ALL of these videos got a FREE camera - and then went snowboarding - and if they had to pay $500 for the camera - then another $99 if they dropped it in the snow - which WILL scratch it - they would not use it. The lens guards dont work - in fact I had one scratch my actual lens when the camera hit the ground while not even snowboarding - SLEDDING on a bunny hill! BUYER BEWARE! These are just commercials for free cameras given to influencers.
Thank you for this video. I just found out about the X4, and was SO happy to see you had a video comparison out. You're my go-to for 360 video recording. Funnily enough, I don't think I've ever heard you talking about watching these videos in a VR headset, which is the only way I view them. Thanks again for this!
Really appreciate your honest and REAL review/comparison. It doesn't sound like the other "paid reviews" out there. been following your channel even though I don't own a 360 camera ( thought I'm in the market). Thanks for keepin' it real!
Please do a review on Insta360 1 inch vs the X4. If the 1 inch still has better daylight video quality (of course it will have at night) then I think I’ll hold off and wait for an 8k upgraded version of the 1inch which shouldn’t be too far away.
Such a great video comparison!! What setting that you used in this video on both camera? The X3 color seems too soft and bright but only lack of sharpness. I preferred that one. I hope you can make a audio comparison at the noisy place between those 2 models and also make a video on how to double the quality on X4 as what you've done on your previous video using X3. I'm planning to upgrade into X4 next month.
Thanks for the great review. The X4's image seems to have more contrast and clarity, even in 5.7k mode. I'm gutted that I bought an X3 about a month ago for a job that got cancelled the week before the shoot. I'd been holding off upgrading from the GoPro Fusion until a decent 8K capable camera came out. I missed out by just a few weeks!
I just got the X4 (I already have the X3 & ONE RS 1 Inch). One piece of advice is for those of you who edit in Premiere Pro is to make sure your computer has the components needed to edit 8K video. I have an i9 9900K CPU & AMD Vega56 Sapphire 8GB GPU, and it is definitely not enough to handle this. Editing through the Insta360 app is still possible, but they don't have keyframes for 360 Videos (they only have it for the reframed videos). Luckily I am about to upgrade my computer with an i7 147000K and 4070 Super which should be able to handle these types of videos, but for those who don't have the newest CPUs and GPUs you may find yourself having an issue.
@ 1:41 Look at the building on the left. This building is quite straight at X4 but the same building is very curvy at X3. Wish you were talk about thiss.
Hola, es posible saber cuál es la resolución real al exportar reframe desde 8k? En la x3 era 1080p, en esta da la opción de 4k? Es muy importante este dato, pienso yo.
It's whatever you set. Previous exports would pseudo-interpolate in order to give the resolution you ask for. 8K around the circle means 2K (i.e. 1080p) @90° though if you reframe at a wide angle you could arguably get close to 4K real pixels. But in practice 1080p or 1440p are the only realistic non-generative values.
Wow, very impressive video and review about the new product of Insta360. This new product has significantly higher frame rate than X3 in 5.7K mode, which is certainly something good. Besides, the low light performance is very strong, which is very useful to people like me. And the footage quality, I think I don'y need to say because this video already told us how good the footage quality this very camera has. This is the most amazing 360 camera I've ever seen!
@The360Guy: How is the stiching in comparison to the "One RS" (what I use at the moment) ? ... I would need this for Skydiving and therefore mount it horizontally on my helmet to not stand out that much. I'm a bit worried that it could have worse stiching than the "One RS" because of its length. Would be nice if you could try this out.
4:10 and pretty much ALL side by side 360 footage shows the X4 in what seems to be a tighter crop, less FOV whereas the X3 shots are wider with hella more distortion. *Except in the 360/5K side-by side, it seems the X4 is slightly wider. Very odd what is going on here? Sorry if I missed why so please explain? Thank you for the video.
Apparently the fins on the back of the camera are for heat dissipation and they work quite well they say. Can't wait to get one, the video quality is much improved, I was worried about the same 1/2 sensor but it all looks great!
Has max clip length on the X4 changed from 29 minutes on the X3? And is there a similar down time while the camera changes files (it's several seconds in the X3).
Quite a miss opportunity to have slightly larger sensor or a lens with a larger aperture, since they have made the camera larger and thicker to have a bigger battery anyway. Oh well.
Thanks for the hard work you put into this. It is what I needed to see to make my upgrade decision. All I can say is, ouch. Great too to see the London locations... County Hall where I worked in 67/68 (yup), the London Eye which I saw being hauled upright and the cable broke, the Barbican area where my ancestors had their musical instrument shop in 1800... One great thing about the London Eye is that it makes a great resolution test location!. Cheers from Melbourne.
When the X3 came out, I posted some long side-by-side videos of X2 versus X3. I was surprised how many folks liked the X2 better. Now I find myself in the same situation where alot of the low light ones in your video look brighter on the X3 versus X4. I may have to redo my long videos tomorrow. I’m curious what folks will say this time. I think the improvement in detail in bright light is worth the upgrade, alone.
Yeah in many scenes I've seen so far it does look to me like the lighting and color on the X3 look better. I'm sure that could be fixed in editing but it's interesting how different they look and how in some cases out of the camera the X3 looks better.
In this video the footage looks so dull. But looking the footage at the release back than it looked not that bad. I think this comparison is a bit biased somehow.
@@gnarfle I’ve been testing my X3 versus X4 and I like the UI updates so much, I’d probably have upgraded even if there was no improvement in the video. There’s lots of new stuff in the firmware. I hope some of it makes it to the X3.
What kind of sizes are we looking at on the X4? I saw that it now records in HEVC and I'm very interested because part of the reason for me avoiding the X3 was the potential for having way too much raw clips lying around taking up space.
It looks like the new magnetic mount system they have. I need more than a tripod screw to mount it on my bike. It would not handle all the bumps. The quality does look much better.
can u review Stitching when putting the lens guard on the x4, I'm considering upgrading from X3, but I'm still not sure. Stitching still looks like the X3.

one camera is picking up the other one, the other is not because of the way I reframed them. It's just picking up the other camera I'm not sure why you're struggling to understand.
My brain is miswired I'm thinking two-dimensionally. Only thinking about the fact that the two cameras are side by side and not thinking about the fact they're not paper thin nor considering the possibility that the x4 may be a degree or 2 off 0°. I wasn't saying it was because of the reframing I said it was happening during the reframing but regardless I've caught up now thank you.
The X3 already produces 8K and 11K video depending on the settings you use. Yes, 8K will heavily tax any system and 11K is not going to be an option for most people without using proxy files for editing. Finding even a player that will play 11K video smoothly is another challenge, though IINA in macOS and MPC-HC in Windows manage it in a flat view. Nothing I have found will play 11k in 360 as yet.
Tbh the camera looks amazing. I've went through a couple of reviews already and compared to older cameras the footage looks soooo crisp and sharp. Can't wait to order my own X4 very soon, hehe. BTW: Does anybody else also notice that the X4 performs way better in low light? Pretty neat for a 360 camera.
Excellent Video!!! Do you know if the X4 will still work with a GPS Action Remote? I am looking to use the X4 for my motorcycle trips. It seems like the X4 would do a better job with more frames per second and higher clarity. Can you tell me if you take the camera out of 360 mode and just use single direction will the video quality be as good as the top of the line GoPro's etc. Thanks!
Motion blur is often preferred in action scenarios, Makes it look like you are going fast. Hopefully they will make a ND filter for it so we can change the shutter speed to match.
You can use the Motion ND effect in the app/desktop software. It's not perfect, as it isn't "real" motion blue, but for things like motorbikes/skiing etc it looks ok.
Too bad that the sensor size hasn’t increased. I’m not even sure if the sensor is newer - but the processing is on a whole other level! Better noise reduction especially in mid light, macro and local contrast ramped up, looks like auto-HDR has also been improved.
BEST COMPARISON EVER!! fantastic video...can the iphone app handle the new 8k video so that I can reframe my 360 video directly on my iphone? I have a15 pro max...the X video is definitely better...maybe the bump in quality will be lost on cellphones's screens but I can see a big improvement on my imac.
Disappointed that it's not a Leica Lens with a 1/1.3 sensor. I guess this means they are still committed to the One RS 1-inch 360. Perhaps an upgrade to that camera is coming.
I have an x3 and the images obtained with it don't look as bad as the ones in this video, what I really observe in this comparison is that the light control on the x4 is better, perhaps your older camera (x3) had a dirty lens or worn, obviously an x4 would have better results for the simple fact that it has not been used much with more intact lenses, another point I observe is that the shadows of the x3 are much lighter, all it would take is an adjustment of the gamma, shadows or even reducing the exposure in the x3 to lower the overall brightness at x3 and get a slightly better result. The x4 is better, but much of this improvement also comes from better processing tuning, which is also welcome. Thanks for the video.
Just bought the x3... With extra batteries and the triple charger. If I buy the x4, do the batteries of the x4 fit/charge in the x3 charger? Can I use x3 batteries in x4 camera? (Yes, lesser video recording time...) Greetings from Belgium
One of my constant fears is breaking or scratching the lenses. If the Premium lenses are tempered glass why not leave them on all the time? Will there be a quality difference between the Premium and leaving them off?
good comparison bro.. i have insta360 X3, i like to use this camera for 360 virtual tour.. if they improve lens size it might help a lot for virtual tour case..
I am expecting a 1" sensor size, lukewarm feelings on the X4. and all existing accessories have to be changed, the mic adapter, the quick reader, nevertheless, quick battery charger and the spare batteries. I do see better in terms of slow motion and smoother images for the day, but disappointed that the night still struggle. wonder, if possible, can we have a video comparison between the 1" 360 edition vs X4, especially in the night.
Three substantive differences that make me very excited for the 8K version of this camera: 1. Night-time image stabilization "smudges" and "sparkles" are much less irritating visually 2. 60 Hz really really improves the aesthetics of fast-moving action 3. Is it my imagination or is the stitch line much harder to see in the X4, despite the thickness?
You did make one mistake/omission and that is using Studio - One can combine only Reframed clips together. Studio will NOT Export combined video’s together in Project. Just wanted to make this clear to everyone. To combine 360 clips together one must use a 3rd party app or software. Otherwise enjoyed the video although I would have preferred to see a comparison to the RS1 Leica 360 cam also.
I just want to be able to edit the videos with any video editing software I want The Insta360 video editing software is legitimately the worst thing I've ever used
And if you fix two cameras on such a platform and shoot them with two cameras at once, and then mount their video on two halves of the screen from each camera on half the screen, look so that each eye sees only half of the screen, will you get a stereo effect? It seems to me that your video is not synchronized at all, and there is no effect.
waiting for insta 360 rs 1-inch 2~ думаю если все плюсы четверки приправить 1дюймовым сенсором, и на нем оставить хотя бы такие же характеристики. могу взять м за 750 долеров
It looks better, the 8k makes it much more usable l, but... Only during daylight, at night I think I prefer the X3. Let's hope that release an X4 pro, with better sensor and low light
Until yesterday the videos that you recorded from the X3 looked very good. Today, strangely, in comparison, they look of much lower quality than the ones you have been uploading regularly. The X4 is logically better but the drop in video quality of the x3 that you upload in the comparison is very strange. I think the X3 doesn't look as bad as in your video today
These are just side by side so little editing to give the fairest comparison. I could edit the hell out of both but not everyone can do that and it would take soooo long. Future videos with the X4 may look better as I edit more thoroughly
I must admit, I was expecting to be Wowed, but I’m not at all. For a proper action camera it’s an awkward shape and the specs just don’t seem that impressive to me. I’m still holding out for the nearly mythical GoPro Max 2….😅 Nice solid review with good footage examples 👍🏻thanks.
Love the video, but your 60p to 30p comparison at 04:50 is just plain silly because your upload is in 30p, so we CANNOT compare the X4 at 60p vs X3 at 30p (the motion blur on the X3 is not due to frame rate, it is due to shutter speed [or APP editing options]). Granted that the 4X at 60p will NOT have a shutter speed that is less than 1/60, so yes, less motion blur than 1/30, but the X3 set to 1/60 or higher should also have similar (i.e. less) blur. Comparing shutter speeds of 1/60 to 1/30 and then saying it is the frame rate (fps, 30 vs 60) that is causing the blur is just plain silly talk. The shutter speed (1/xx) and frame rate (fps or p) can be set independent of each other in various combinations. What you are showing us at 30p is a X3 video shot at 30p and 1/30 vs X4 shot at 60p and 1/60 but then converted to 1/30p for the upload (by dropping every other frame) but still retaining 1/60 shutter speed quality. Redo this segment using the same shutter speeds (e.g. 1/60) and the two different frame rates (fps) and you will see same level of motion blur per frame (though because of sensor pixel size variation (not pixel count), there may be some quality variations). Try comparing X3 5.7k w X4 5.7k in great light with both set to the same high shutter speed (e.g. 1/240) and do the same hand motion and they should look the same, except for the extra frames of the X4 (which you are omitting when you upload as 30p anyway).

Thanks for the review! How about the mobile soft/ desktop app, do you see any issues with editing 8k videos (because of larger files, etc)?
I noticed that too! Quite a pleasant surprise given that there were so many comments that the sensor was not upgraded.
Thanks!
Can't see why not, but I haven't tested it yet
so dope! just bought with your link
yooo thanks my man. These videos take so long to make haha
How does X4 compare to the Pro2 for 360 video?
Motion blur is often preferred in action scenarios, Makes it look like you are going fast. Hopefully they will make a ND filter for it so we can change the shutter speed to match.
You can use the Motion ND effect in the app/desktop software. It's not perfect, as it isn't "real" motion blue, but for things like motorbikes/skiing etc it looks ok.
I bought an insta360 One RS 1” a few weeks ago. What do I do? 😅 is this an upgrade?
Perhaps an upgrade to that camera is coming.
can you torn down sharpening effect on X4? image is definitely better but too much sharpening is applied
you can set it to low. I had it on medium
I wanted a lowlight chip like in the ace pro 😢
Does anyone know about the camera overheating issue? I have the X3, and it gets fairly warm.
Does get warm when shooting 8K but I've shot for 30 mins and it hasn't overheated yet. Will depend on weather etc
Great review as usual. One thing not clear about the battery. Is X3 battery compatible with X4?
No, they are different sizes
@The360Guy As its 8k Do you see any lagging in editing on iPhone 13+?
Great review. Thanks. Question, are the X3 batteries compatible with the X4
No
thanks bro. half inc sensor goes to disapointment. same as exprience x3 to low light image quality horiable. dont move to change cam from x3 to x4
I was waiting this camera to do Skydive… I have the x3 and I’m excited to use the x4.
Just bought the x3... With extra batteries and the triple charger. If I buy the x4, do the batteries of the x4 fit/charge in the x3 charger? Can I use x3 batteries in x4 camera? (Yes, lesser video recording time...) Greetings from Belgium
Which color profile did you used? HDR, LOG, Vivid?
Just standard for both
One of my constant fears is breaking or scratching the lenses. If the Premium lenses are tempered glass why not leave them on all the time? Will there be a quality difference between the Premium and leaving them off?
I'll do a video to check just that
Apparently the Premium ones are dust magnets, surprisingly, but may be more scratch resistant long term.
good comparison bro.. i have insta360 X3, i like to use this camera for 360 virtual tour.. if they improve lens size it might help a lot for virtual tour case..
1 Inch 360 comparison coming soon
When will you update your course for the insta360 x4?
Almost everything in the course still applies to the X4. I'm making some X4 specific lessons now which should be uploaded soon.
can you create a small 3d tour so we can see the difference? thanks
What is the best quality you can get making a flat video from 360? I it supporting 4k?
you can reframe and export at 4K. It won't look exactly like normal 4K footage. closer to 2.7K, maybe a bit better
Three substantive differences that make me very excited for the 8K version of this camera:
1. Night-time image stabilization "smudges" and "sparkles" are much less irritating visually
2. 60 Hz really really improves the aesthetics of fast-moving action
3. Is it my imagination or is the stitch line much harder to see in the X4, despite the thickness?
Thank you for this, Sir!
What microSD card do you recommend? V60? V30? Obviously 60 sounds better but are there drawbacks to overdoing it?
the largest and fastest one you can afford!
Where are those mountains trails?
Monserrat, Spain.
That will be a separate video :)
@@The360Guy Thank You - Look forward to your review/thoughts. 👍
I just want to be able to edit the videos with any video editing software I want
The Insta360 video editing software is legitimately the worst thing I've ever used
Does the Dji mic 2 work in Bluetooth mode?
Yes, according to another reviewer who showed it working.
What do you think. Is it worth to wait for a Go Pro max 2? I am a Go Pro max user and i want to buy a new 360 cam in 2024.
GoPro Max 2 rumoured for autumn this year
And if you fix two cameras on such a platform and shoot them with two cameras at once, and then mount their video on two halves of the screen from each camera on half the screen, look so that each eye sees only half of the screen, will you get a stereo effect? It seems to me that your video is not synchronized at all, and there is no effect.
This is not a stereo video? it's two videos from two cameras side by side
I'm guessing this X4 has inherited the same chipset(s) from the Ace Pro to be able to process the 8k
Looks like it!
waiting for insta 360 rs 1-inch 2~
думаю если все плюсы четверки приправить 1дюймовым сенсором, и на нем оставить хотя бы такие же характеристики. могу взять м за 750 долеров
TH-cam upload not process 8k ?
Any trade in offer from insta360 to purchase the X4 and trade in the X3?
@@The360Guy thanks, good video and I subscribe to your channel
@@rangerkayla8824 I will upload a 360 video compilation that you can watch on your Quest 3. I'll talk about it there
Does it have the zoom function?
Reframing when editing gives you zooming by cropping
Is it true that X3 supports LOG and X4 does not?
Can you use the same mic adapter from the X3 on the X4?
Bluetooth headset facility in X4.
Apparently not. It attaches, but doesn't work.
@@HellbellyUK I seen in another video that it doesn’t work you need to buy a specific X4 mic adapter 😒
@@C_Marty9101 That's what it said. It's a bit annoying considering the X3 adapter connects physically to the camera, just doesn't work.
I must admit, I was expecting to be Wowed, but I’m not at all. For a proper action camera it’s an awkward shape and the specs just don’t seem that impressive to me. I’m still holding out for the nearly mythical GoPro Max 2….😅
Nice solid review with good footage examples 👍🏻thanks.
Why is the water on the x3 clearer than the x4?
Compared to your X3 presentation footage why are looking the shots of the x3 in this video so dull?
I didn't do any extra editing for these shots. Just out of the camera
Can you record longer than 30 min without gaps?
According to another review I saw, yes.
Just purchased! Only had the X3 a month too!!!!
I just bought it for 2 days and I'm very unhappy!
Is better than 1inch?
