Replacing Rear Springs on a Renault Clio

  • The Clio failed its MOT the other day because of a broken rear spring, i didn't notice this issue when checking the car as the break was so small.
    Although the Test only said one spring was broken i decided to change both at the same time, the cost for a pair of springs from a local motor factors was £38.
    Changing the rear springs in a clio is a very easy job to do, just unbolt the damper, drop the axle on one corner, pull out the spring and put the new one in.

    I had a go at replacing a broken coil spring on my Clio Mk3. To my surprise, when I removed the shock absorber bolt, the rear axle didn't drop down very much. I eventually realised that I had to remove the bolt on the other side as well to let the whole axle drop down. Unfortunately for me, this bolt was unbelievably difficult to remove. Aching body, scraped hands ... sounds familiar?

      Haha i remember the joys, sitting on concrete in the cold, bits of rust going into the eyes and ahces from turning something at an ackward angle.
      A cordless impact wrench though can make a huge difference on this sort of job.

    Where did you put your axle stands in this video, and would you recommend putting them on the rear beam?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what i remember i put them on the rear sill, i kept them away from the back axle as i had to move it to get the springs in.

    I have a slight knocking noise from the back left area when going over ramps, just had brand new springs installed. any idea what it might be?

      Were the rubber ends put on the spring as it was reinstalled, and in reasonable condiiton?

      peugeotCitroen2CV thanks for the reply, sorted it out, the boot catch was just a bit loose and was knocking on bumps

    Just got given my daughters 2001 Mk2 1.2 16v for £70 with long MOT as my corsa is due for the crusher just saved all but a couple of your videos as they are really concise. Just Redex'd and carb sprayed rather than removing the throttle body due to stalling and blown all the crap out and cars running sweet. however I have your guide should I need to do that. I am also going to replace the anti roll bar bushes so that vid was great shame you got rid of your clio would have been great to see more vids. Thanks for all the info on here Regards Bill

      Great to hear that, £70 isnt bad for any car with an MOT
      The wee clio i had was an okay car, i just sold it as i wanted something bigger and replaced it with the 406
      I actually have an accident damaged clio at the bottom of the yard i plan to fully strip and do videos on.

      They dont really rust (bar one spot near the petrol filler cap) and for all their minor niggles, underneath it they are fairly durable cars.
      Best of luck, and hope you get plenty of good motoring out of it.

      cheers buddy glad I came across your vids showed me how easy they are to work on just got to get the battery leads off now the last owner before my daughter put narrow nuts on and I cant get a spanner on it and no room for a socket I will probably need to remove the ground from the body to take the battery out :-)

      meant to ask how the hell do you get the seat cover off as the passenger side tilt cable has become dislodged in the back of the seat so it's not tilting and can't work out how to lift the cover up enough to reconnect the sheath to the frame. Any tips?

    Would this work if you were replacing old springs with lowering springs?

    **Word of advice** Spray some WD-40 inside the tube that the shocker mount/hub is welded to. The end of the bolt protrudes in to the tube and gets quite rusty, just done mine and spent 20 mins unscrewing the shocker mounting bolt.....The rest of the job took about 5 mins!

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A can of WD-40 is a very handy thing to have close by.

      Same, had 950nm impact gun on it, wouldn't move after half way out...screwed in and out whilst spraying with wd40 half a dozen times until it came out easy, really didn't want to break the bolt....I put a big blob of grease on the end of the bolt up the tube when I was finished.

    Did the comfort increase after the coil spring changes?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      TRUCK DRIVER
      No not really there was very little noticeable from within the car with the broken spring, the clio was a fairly soft car there was no sudden change in ride quality

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cant remember what brand it was, just one bought from a local motor factors that was at the standard ride height for the clio.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, the coil spring itself had cracked off at the end of one of its coils its just about possible to see whats missing at around 1:50 when the old and new springs are compared.

      Seems to happen as they age, this one had been driving around with no noticeable issues, the mot man brought me over to the car and pointed out how the spring had cracked.

      They are very easy to change, mainly because no spring compressor is needed, rusty parts are the only thing that might make it a bit more difficult
