    Something happened to me last December that changed my entire stance on guitar modelers, amp pedals, and tone. I really can't believe I'm saying this but... After two years of playing on digital guitar modelers and amp replacement pedals, I'm going back to tube amps. No, I'm not joining the leagues of tone snobs who swear you need a tube amp to sound good. I don't think modelers suck at all. But if you haven't played on an amp in a minute, then I think it's time you give it another try.
    The amp that did it for me was actually a $160 Orange Micro Terror head. I plugged into it because it was so darn cute, and was immediately blown away. Was it the most glorious amp tone I had ever heard? No. But there was just something to the texture and feel of playing a guitar through an amp. I refuse to say it was "pushing air" because I hate that phrase. Still, the experience was different enough that I said out loud: "I think I've been playing on digital for far too long."
    But, I like many of you live in a condo, and I can't crank my tube amp to those ear piercing levels to achieve that sweet spot tone so I decided I would try out a Hybrid Rig. Now with my Quad Cortex, amp head, and Two Notes Torpedo Captor I'm able to get the modern convenience and flexibility of digital with the creamy, rich, and lively tone of my favorite tube amps. I've been recording guitar this way for about two months now, and it's been an incredible experience.
    In this video, I'm peeling back the curtain on how I was able to utilize the FX loop on the Quad Cortex paired with my favorite amp & load box to easily implement my tube amp into my guitar workflow. And the best part, all I had to do was substitute the amp in my go-to Quad Cortex presets for an FX loop and I was off to the races with tone for days. Oh, and also pretty cool: I can crank my tube amp and still have total volume control. That's right: sweet spot tone and no upset neighbors. Now, I'm sure you are wondering how big of a difference this actual makes? To help out, I've got several tone comparisons throughout the video so you can hear for yourself. But if you ask me, I think the difference becomes larger as you start to layer more guitars. It's the cumulative effect that's helped my guitars sit even better in a mix.
    Be sure to grab a copy of my Quad Cortex preset through the link to my Etsy store, like the video, share it with a fellow guitarist, and subscribe to the channel, if you haven't already-

    If this doesn’t get the Tube Amp Diehards off of my back, I don’t know what will…

    As an old guy that has never even seen a tube amp in person, I've always been tempted to get one. But, having to use something like the captor because of the high volume, well, it kinda beats the purpose, so I will stay digital. Until I win the lotto without playing! Then I will get a few dumbles!

      @JustinMuncy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you got an amp with an FX loop, or a line out then you could skip the captor. Neither of my amps have an FX loop though, hence the captor. Believe me, I thought exactly what you wrote until I tried it. Well worth the couple hundred bucks to get my custom amp back into the workflow- Doesn't defeat the purpose at all for me :)

    Tube amps rule always, BUT components go bad and need replacing every so often. My reissue Ampeg R 12R is in the shop to replace all the capacitors.
    I also have both a solid state (JC40) and an FRFR (Fender FR12). The FRFR doesn't scratch that real amp itch. It gets real close but if you know the difference, you just know.

      Oh for sure! Components can go bad on anything though.

    Hi Justin. A few weeks back I sold my QC and then I bought the Fender Tone Master Pro. I am way happier with it. I am going to try running it through My Fender Twin's effects loop and see what that sounds like. The Twin is a monster of an amp. Entirely too loud for any venue I would be in. Maybe the two together could work for playing at home. At church it is silent stage. I hate wearing ear monitors. So I turn my hearing aids up a bit and I always play where I catch the sound off the PA speaker going by... small church. Keep up the great work!

      I'm glad you landed in a great place for you! I haven't tried out the Tone Master Pro, but I'm sure it's solid. Literally all of the modelers are on a pretty level playing field tone wise now. Hahaha that's funny. I grew up playing on IEMs so I'm the opposite. I hate playing without them-

    Sounds great! Curious, have you tried any of the Fractal stuff? I've used the Axe FX III now since I think 2019, and it has been incredible. I prefer it to the QC or Kemper by a large margin.
    EDIT: I prefer the amp modeling of the Fractal. Effects I don't necessarily have a dog in the fight, though Fractal verbs and delays have been incredible.

    • @JustinMuncy
      @JustinMuncy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks dude! I haven’t used it personally, but I’ve heard it in person a few times. I think they all sound good now. Fractal seems to attract a more metal/rock n roll crowd for whatever reason, so I’ve really only heard it in that application. I bought the QC specifically for touring. It had the interface I liked the most, and I preferred the sound over what I heard with others. But even with the QC, it’s taken about a year of experimenting to get it to sound how I want it to. I don’t doubt you could get the same sound fractal though-

    I'm running one of my rigs pretty much the same way with the Captor X and all but, don't you get ground noise problems? I was able to fix mine by adding the Radial SB6 in the chain of the FX loop but, without that, I feel like this setup is unusable. Otherwise a certainly insteresting way to use the QC.

    • @JustinMuncy
      @JustinMuncy  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm my setup this way is very silent… Like you’d have to max out your output volume to hear the hiss… My guess is either your pickups are noisier, you’re running more gain, or maybe just dirty power?

    • @dimi409
      @dimi409 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Could be a power issue I guess. I work on a tv set with cameras and lights all over the place. It felt ok from home but, when I got to the studio, I had a bit of a panic until my buddy let me try his Radial thing. It truly did the trick. But, I’ll have to see in a different context if have the same problem. Thanks for your answer.

      Yooooo!! Thank you so much!! If you have two amps with FX loops then the 4 cable method can sound pretty great for sure! I just like not having an actual volume. I'm the anti-guitarist hahaha.
