    We are continuing our series on restarts this week with a lesson on how to restart in the middle of your fill and cap passes with 7018. The most important thing to remember when you strike your restart is that you need to strike above the point where you ended last, long arc down to the highest point of the bead, fill it in and then continue on with the weld.

    You da man Bob!
    I've been welding for 28 years, but I've not done everything through those years, due to limited equipment or procedures at places I've worked.
    Never too old to learn and I always pick up a little something from your videos. I wish there was a way to come out and take a course from you, because I would love to learn more!
    Thanks for the continued videos, advice and help!!

    This guy is a character, no doubt about it! I'm really looking forward to hearing about how his experience with the MTS 221 STi and which positives exceed his expectations. Not having to touch the machine after several stops, starts, and solid arc initiation is good.

    After 6 weeks in an evening arc welding course at the local college, I am finally getting the hang of it (ran some pretty decent beads last night, if I do say so myself. ha) Plus I am understanding your stick videos so much better. This is great information that you provide, for free! Thanks for your time and effort. And thanks to camera guy for his work as well.

    After getting my Everlast I started learning with this rod 3/32 7018 and I've learned it's helpful to have a flat file on the side to hit the slag covered tip on. That's about the only good use for a harbor freight file.

    i know this is a 2 year old video, but I was always told to break your arc halfway on 7018. the first time you terminated the arc it looked to be on the left side. like on a weave break it halfway in the middle. the reasoning for this is when you start up top(like you did) it gives the rod a chance to heat up and so you burn out the porosity of the long arc and also it gets a little easier to look smooth because it has a bit longer to heat up so it wets out a bit better.

    Good video, I use a piece of a broken file on a fat magnet to clean the rid tip. When I was welding truck chassis there was rarely a clean surface close by to use. An older welder taught me that and other tips.

      @eddiekawecki2510 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea as long as you don't stick it on the frame or any steel part your welding on and have it arc every time you scrape the rod on it. I take it you lay it down next to you.

      He means when you are finished a pass flick the electrode (in a safe direction) immediately after and that slag will come off in a molten state before it has a chance to solidify. Makes it so you have a nice clean electorde to start without having to tap or file it.

    One thing that I have noticed in your multi pass welding demonstrations is what is done to the prior pass. I notice that you only wire brush the previous pass. I work in the pipeline industry and the common practice is that when the prior pass is completed, it is then ground so that it is smooth and does not have any ripples from the previous pass. What are your thoughts on this?

    Wow Bob your channel is bloody amazing really professional. Top class. Just love the work you do. Now what do I buy arc mig tig. I'm leaning more to arc/tig.
    Bob when I find a suitable welder could I get your advice on it. Ounce I've found one.
    I'm restoring a 80yr old metal lathe. And the back gear cover got damaged in transit and needs repairing. It's cast iron. I do intend to learn first before I even attempt to try and repair it. But I got in touch with a local company & they wanted to charge me £250 on one side of the flange . And both sides needs doing. I just can't afford £500 for the repair.. I've watched quit a few of your videos now and I'm thoroughly enjoying your channel thanks for all the effort teaching us new to welding really is appriciated. And a big Hi from across the pond UK 👍👍👍👍

    • @kf8575
      @kf8575 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agustin Hernandez good amperage setting, good arc length, and clean steel, then yes you can do, more often than not it seperates completely and falls off. The peeler effect is more exagerated with an iron powder or a rutile rod such as a 6013

    Hello Mr.Bob , good teaching video ,i am learning a lot .I do have a question for you about 7018 rod .
    Can you clarify this for me once and for all !!
    The vendor tells me not to buy 7018 rod if i have only a couple of welds to do ..!!!????
    Because he says , once the package of rod is open , i have to use them all right away ????
    To prevent humidity , and they won't be of any use after a couple days ????
    He pushes me 7014 rod instead
    What do you think of that ( i know that any type of wet rod will not work but to that point ??)
    Thanks in advance
    Serge ( from Mtl )

    • @bobmoffatt4133
      @bobmoffatt4133 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      S Faucon Should store them in an oven for code work. You can run them just fine for quite sometime after the box is open. Why not a 10 lb can?

    • @merlyn703
      @merlyn703 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sir the reasoning behind that is the 7018 rod is what is know as a low hydrogen fast fill rod it absorbs moisture from the air the best and only way to prevent that is to keep them in a oven specifically designed for low hydrogen rods

    • @bobmoffatt4133
      @bobmoffatt4133 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      merlyn703 Yes, I know it is low hydrogen. Not fast fill. Fill/freeze.

    • @allenmckinney9533
      @allenmckinney9533 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      S Faucon if you plan to store them for a while just store them in a sealable container with a moisture pack to absorb any moisture that may be in the rods. That's why when you buy something that comes with a silica gel pack you keep it. You can dry the packs out in a microwave to reuse them. Also Walmart sells 2lb Lincoln electric packs for $5-6 same as harbor freight but Lincoln's are much better.

    When you restart, do you ever have to worry about slag getting trapped under the beginning of the next weld with that long arc downward movement?

    • @juhis950
      @juhis950 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      WILSON! You are not really depositing Almost Any metal by doing so. Just leave arc marks Which you cover by Welding over Them. I would think That three is much higher risk of slag trap, by starting directly on the previous pass, with a short arc. The long arcing heats the rod very quickly, and then When you stop To form the weld pool, its hot and liquid straight away. And so it blends and penetrates in very Well, and makes a smooth looking restart also. Hope this helps. I live in Finland, Where We stickweld with 7018 only, open roots Also. So there is a lot of restarts and They have To be x Ray quality. These are my thoughts That have helped me a lot.

    I bought a surplus of old ESAB OK 21.03, they are gouging/cutting electrodes. I used them per instructions but they do not work, they just give a small burst like they should but then "turn off" so to speak, almost like my amps would go way down (they dont, other larger rods burn fine). It was a sealed, full pack, although old, and they dont atleast feel wet. Does anyone know if they can be saved by drying (what temp/time?) or is the shielding material just broken down by time so it doesn't hold the blowing jet like it should?
    I also got full packs of stainless and hard facing electrodes from the same pile, they seem to work just fine.

    • @NSW
      @NSW 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Catrik moisturiser is not the issue. Some machine's won't run them. Maybe try to increase arc force. But I would say that you should try them on an other machine.

    • @Catrik
      @Catrik 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No arc force, it's just a simple inverter. ESAB catalog says it doesn't need any special manchinery and it's supposed to work on all machnines.. I'll have to try to find some other machine to try them on.

    Well why are my instructors telling me that weaving is not good and isn't allowed on weld tests? Everything for us is stringers and it's a lot harder to keep slag out of that weld when you have to run stringers.

      Training Grounds As far as I know it Varies, some people want stringers some want weaves, the usual reason weaves are not allowed is because weaves tend to put more heat into the metal, and this can theoretically cause a failure in the heat affected zone. At the end of the day I recommend learning both, in the field you will definitely use them both

      It's all about the weld test. You get the job if you pass the weld test and that's what these videos are about. So are you saying you have experience with companies accepting weaves in their weld tests in order to get a job with them? Or are you just saying that in the field you can do both? I'm talking about the weld tests and it's my understanding that you are never allowed to use weaves on the weld test. I can do both myself if I were on the job but you can't get that job without passing their weld test which always require stringers.

      Training Grounds I’m actually in welding school myself so most of what I know is anecdotal, but according to my instructors, weaves are sometimes allowed on weld tests, it will be specified of course, and usually when they are allowed they are limited to 2 1/2 times the diameter of the electrode.
