3 years on from my daughters diagnosis, at aged 19, I remain amazed that Counselling wasn’t even mentioned for her, or us as her parents. My daughter won’t go to see anyone, but I went and grieved the loss of my dear daughters health, and talked through the fears I have for her future. It was so tough - but I am so much better for it now. That makes me a better support for her. So Counselling for loved ones is important too. MS affects the whole family 💕

I believe every person would benefit from seeing a counselor. If you have ever had a good counselor, you would agree. If you see a counselor that feels like it’s not a good fit, you just need stop at the counter and ask for a new one.

Important that the therapist is someone you are comfortable with. I didn’t luck out the first two times, but just recently found a good one. I didn’t feel they really cared so the therapy wasn’t effective. Excellent points about grieving and change management.

Thank thank you for posting this. I'm in the process of residency for LPC mental health and professional counseling. MS has become my passion to advocate for, one day integrative medicine will be a reality and counseling will become a part of treatment. My biggest concern is people are given life altering news and more often than not, aren't given the tools to emotionally process this event. I love this so so much. You've wonderfully articulated the benefit and profession of professional counseling! Care for the whole man, mind, body and spirit!! I love this so much, and comparing it to grief is spot on! Resilience has been one of the biggest factors in Cognative health and there's empirical evidence that shows it improving physical health!! Well done!!

Marie, that's where I was. Still fantasize that it could have worked if he would have been willing to go for counseling. I spent a lot of time at the counseling center for family violence, way before I knew my issue was MS. He wouldn't come along. Now mourning loss of function, but, after DMT, diet, supplements and self care and a loving community, feeling better too.

Dr. Boster, I watch your videos and after every time I wish even more that you were my Neurologist! I have lived in different places and have had a handful of Neurologists. I can think of two that were genuinely concerned about me-Dr. Ruth Fredericks in Jackson, MS and another one who was at The University of South Alabama that I cannot remember his name. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate the fact that you have used your personal time to help educate me, a stranger, AND that you have been doing this for years! (I found some vintage videos). Thank you from the bottom of my heart and may God bless you tremendously for your compassion and willingness to help!

Thank you for posting this topic Dr. B. I would like recommend to this community, to also speak to a trained psyc outside of your church or synagogue. Sometimes, as the person looking for guidance, you may get caught up in representing your faith in front of this person at church or synagogue. MS, at times, feels like a theif you HAVE to live with. When dealing with how to reconcile your faith and the path your on that wasn't your choice, you should be able to show all your emotions to this counselor without the thought of, "am I representing my faith correctly? Am I expressing myself as they recommend or expect during service?" Remember this illness is affecting You. Don't sucumb to the expectations in your mind of your faith. Talk to someone else not in that circle, but if it makes sense to continue reaching out to your church or synagogue or wherever it is that you practice your faith, then do so. I wish you all better days and improved health. 🤗

Thank you Dr. B. I remember one of the worst experiences for me, was my change in attitude towards my husband. My temper became too short and I lost my ability to reason with well thought out thoughts. I didn't realize my body was being injured and my mind was running on a compromised capacity. I try my best to listen to my husband, and still have times I fall short. But his patience and love for me have helped me cope with being a different wife. I will seek help to continue to improve myself and my marriage. I have nothing to lose and so much to gain.

Hello and thank you so much for putting this video up. I have MS and at the beginning really struggled with coming to terms with it whilst balancing everything else in my life. I went to some very dark places.
I sought professional help and went to many therapy sessions. This helped immensely but I felt like a 'fraud', a 'drama queen' and guilty.
Watching/listening to your video has helped slot everything into place. In a few short minutes, I have felt like my needs have been validated and it's helped me to review the help I was given. Looking back, it's obvious how much the therapy helped!
MS or no MS, therapy really helps!
Big thank you again Aaron, for this and all your awesome videos 😘

Yup...I’m seeing a couples counselor and she’s fantastic. My hubby is an excellent support group..no complaints there but my adult children still have their heads in the sand. She explains how they perceive my illness and she also acknowledges my concerns about the things I can’t do anymore. The sad thing is, I had a friend of 25 years and she’s known all these years I have MS. Recently, she sent me a nasty email saying I make “excuses” for not doing things. I came to realize that SHE was disappointed that I chose NOT to move to South Carolina because well....it’s humid! Why would I do,that?! This was her agenda because she had family there and wanted me to be there since she and her family are at odds. I would be her buffer. The point is, I’ve learned that if a friend or family member can’t accept me as is, then I return THEM to the world. Free shipping back to their denial land.

Thanks, Doc it's great advice, & I truly believe in counseling, even though our very first family councilor we were seeing or rather my children were seeing to cope with the death of their Grandmother, told my husband to leave me, yes that's true, she advised my husband of 9 yrs at the time, to leave me, she told him that he would be better off & so would my young children. Well, I immediately stopped their treatment with her, informed the school of her advice & she was fired. Turns out, she was was very wrong in a lot her ways with others as well. Even though after 37yeas of marriage we still need counseling, life changes & so does the MS, as we get older & the kids are grown with families of their own. MS is a hard disease to live with & no matter what stage we're in we all can benefit from talking to someone else. Thanks again for being such an amazing, caring doctor, I know a lot who could learn from you. God Bless 😊💜🧡

I am glad that you have addressed with this Doc B. I had no problems accepting the practicalities of MS and how it affected me, accepting it emotionally was a whole different ball game. I had had MS for 10 years before I realized that I hadn't and I was in counselling for 3 years and I am now now in a much better place because of it. From personal experience it is something that I think all MSers need to try to do so that they can live and not exist, getting on with their lives and accepting whatever the MS throws their way, however frustrating it may be.

Now that I am in palliative care, they supply me with access to a counselor. And it has been a blessing to have someone I can vent to about not being able to do what I use to or dealing with a relative that doesn't think anything is wrong because they can't see it unless I am using my cane or Walker and they are still in denial. I was a very private person so it was difficult at first telling a stranger my personal feelings. But I have a good counselor and she has gotten me through it. So for those that are like me and private just give it a try give it time and you will be glad you did.

I'm very happy with this video. One of the things I decided to do after my diagnosis and during the time I was recovering from the symptoms of the relapse was to see a psychotherapist. I still go every week. Even though ms has not limited my life, my first relapse was pretty bad. I decided to make exercise regularly and to follow the "run for 4" + 1 - to see a psychotherapist to help with unprocessed emotions. I think the whole combination was the key of the relapse recovery and hopefully for the prevention of future relapses :)

I think that is great advice. I was a office manager at a Psychology Office for 17 years, until I had to stop working a year ago because of too many issues with my MS. Luckily, my bosses (Both Psychologists)were very understanding and I have a close relationship with them even today. So, although I don't see my own personal counselor I still talk with them about issues I am having on a regular basis.

I went about my life as i would have if i didn’t have ms because i didn’t know when it would stop me so i did university and got married had my son and then it started to go downhill. Your presentation as you've continued to expand your ability to inform the infallible using multimedia gets an A+ , Doc. Very on par, bullseye, no doubt touché. I'm fortunate to have been divorced prior to Dx but understand the intolerability that has come with the MonSter, so see and hear myself incorrectly snapping and causing difficulty just in my contact with friends and family. As Dr Boster explains, this is why I see a psychologist-there is only so much family can help with. This is why it is also important that family members have their own trained listeners.

The best example in my life would be the SSA deeming that I have improved and are terminating my benefits which include medical coverage which means no more treatments for my ms, physical health or mental health.
