    I'd just like to clarify some points that have been raised regards a couple of my 'tips' in the video.
    Firstly my advice to not watch TV. By that I mean the mainstream media drivel. The lowbrow, low value, unintelligent garbage such as those programs I mentioned. I'd also readily include Britain's Got Talent (surely the top candidate for a misrepresentation lawsuit?)
    Secondly the segment about not drinking. I should have added 'excessively' to this. It's a sad fact that around 50% - 60% of 'liveaboard' boaters (I've encountered my fare share), will develope a drink problem at some point - whether as a result of unhappiness or a desire to be with others due to loneliness (the pub). Ironically alcohol can amplify, not cure, these symptoms. Of course a beer or glass of wine every now and again isn't a drink problem and is actually very good for you.

      @bohomaturebabe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think you need to realise that most people (not all, of which I am one)) see TV, microwaves et al, as an essential part of life. Many people have the telly FOR company so as not to feel lonely. Hopefully intelligent people will be selective in their viewing though?

    • @bohomaturebabe
      @bohomaturebabe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      As for alcohol, I know a fair few boaters - mostly singles. Yes.we might settle down for the evening in fronyt of the burner with a bottle or two, have tow-path parties, BBQ. sing a few songs, get a bit drunk (smoke a bit of blow even) fall in the bushes, - you know the sort of thing, but 70% of us are not alcoholics or druggies.

But eventually some toxic person stole my van and my dream after three years of amazing adventures enjoying nature wherever possible. And yes while visiting a historically interesting city (Seville Spain) to enjoy the history and architecture etc I came back to find my van stolen.

    I think this is spot on and exactly why I am moving on to a narrowboat. It isn't that I want to be sad or lonely, it is just I think some people struggle a bit with what society throws at them, and I am one of those people... constant shopping for stuff, alcohol ( i don't drink anymore ) and so on, stuff and more stuff, tv and wasting time on random ideas trying to overfill my head with stuff, irrelevant stuff ... it is as if everyone else has a super power where they can resist all this stuff no problem... but some of us can only do it by not being around it.

    Kevin have watched this "video" many times now and you are very inspiring, since my wife left and both kids are now grown up, I have been thinking about selling my home and buying a boat, probably a 57 foot. The only thing that has me worried is the loneliness. Your video is a credit to you. Particularly enjoyed the black and white narrow boat beginners guide. I am an engineer like yourself, so jobs on the boat ( and for other boaters ) will be no problem. Only got 11 months to retire ,so starting to look for a boat. Thanks for your advice and keep them coming 👍

I thoroughly enjoyed watching your video and felt happy for you. I am sure your honesty and advice will help others too. Thank you.

    Hello, I have only recently found your channel & have just watched this video & the one about the attack. Firstly & boringly I am sure, so sorry to hear about it.
    I just wanted to send you greetings & let you know I agree totally agree about not having to feel lonely even if you are alone , for me, I enjoy my own company,& this became really handy about 22 years ago when my life changed totally & due to life's happenstance I lost my health, my job, my wife, children & home all within 6 months.
    Of course this meant I had to rebuild my life at the age of 40 with no money or home & had my elderly mother not been around, I would have been on the street. So, as is always the case, past friends choose sides, & I lost everyone so upon rebuilding my life, alone is what I am but not lonely.
    You are correct about keeping busy & I love lists!!
    So many view life as hard & sometimes it is but one cannot allow yourself to be ground down.
    As time passes, one adapts & if lucky, life becomes less of an opponent & more of a cohort in life's adventures.
    So 22 years on, health worsening but have my own place & someone nice in my life but as you say, nothing can be achieved if you allow yourself to get bogged down.
    I even dabbled on TH-cam myself for a few years so feel free to check out my channel.(no new content these days due to health but hope you enjoy what's there)
    Keep well Sir, enjoy the network
    All the best

    Really have enjoyed watching all the TBN episodes. Your comments on how we perceive the world around us, is in our own minds, our relationship with TV and News is an important observation.
    It seems many are not aware, or chose to ignore, the anaesthetic effects of mainstream TV and how TV is the “Soma” of our current society.
    The general news in any country is designed to maintain a world view most favourable to that particular local narrative. It’s often of little real value in your day to day life. Keep up the philosophy!!

      Very very true, Dos. The continual stress and worry from being force fed all this garbage from the media on a daily basis, was a significant driving force for me moving onto a boat, and ditching the TV and daily perusal of the mainstream press. Me and my husband just started watching you on Netflicks here in USA. Never really thought about Narrowboats before. Saw a couple on the canals in Dublin and I think on the Seine and thought they were nice. You really open our eyes to a new world, thank you. And we were worried that you might get lonely or be besieged by people that like the sound of their own voice, so I would just like to advise that you pretend you have the runs, tell them you have to leg it to the Jax urgently, they won’t hang around. It worked for me during a bible class I didn’t want to be at and someone went on and on and on. Best of luck, we love your style Kevin.

      Those are words that takes on a completely different meaning, once the “ what doesn’t kill you” part; comes extremely close to, but doesn’t kill you. I can relate. I was attacked by three guys who tried to steal my necklace by yanking it repeatedly off of my neck when I was visiting Chile in South America. When you mentioned that on your walk back to the boat you had a heightened sense of awareness, as if another attack was imminent, I completely understand. Your older than myself by a few years, but I can tell you, that life is full of chapters. That was a chapter, that may have impacted the coarse of the rest of your novel. I’m a middle school science teacher, and before I start my first day of distance learning with my students tomorrow. My wife and I are going to, as we have been for quite some time, settle in for the night and enjoy our supper, while enjoying your show! Cheers Kevin!

    A brilliant vlog Kevin and such valuable and obvious advice that most of us don't adhere to until someone like you explains it. Negativity is so toxic, its like a magnet that tries to draw us towards and with a few simple rules we could quite easily change our ways. You look very well since your last youtube video, you are obviously practising what you preach. 👍

  • @themodelrailwaymen3649
    @themodelrailwaymen3649 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Great stuff. Particularly the observations on toxic people and TV. Negativity does ooze or pour out of some imo. I have read it described as energy vampirism. Also, the alcohol/nicotine use observation. They are very strong narcotics and should be avoided whether you are prone to depression or not imo, but each to their own also applies.

    Nice to hear from a likeminded person. Just because someone choses alternative accommodation, doesn't mean they've chosen an alternative lifestyle.
    I lived in a motorhome for two years, and only met one other van dweller with no tv. I haven't watched it for 13+ years now. If I want to watch something specific, e.g.. Blue Planet with D Attenborough, I'll find a way..download or DVD whatever.
    The cooking thing is massive, and it's integral to the whole concept of looking after one's self. Self sufficiency. It's wholesome, it's heartwarming... and once you achieve a degree of skill, you get used to a much higher quality of life, than most other people will ever experience. Home roasted and ground coffee, sourdough bread..the list is endless.
    I wouldn't say that I suffer from loneliness..... being alone is mostly superb.... but I occasionally feel a sense of melancholy. Simply because we are such a tiny minority that act this way.
    I say act, rather than think.
    Because in my experience whenever I've told somebody that I haven't owned a TV for many years, immediately they will say "oh I hardly ever watch it".
    Which translates to "I know I shouldn't watch it but I haven't got the willpower to get rid of it".
    Anyway it was refreshing to watch your video, and to know that there are at least a few people out there with like minds.
    Very best of luck in your endeavours........J
    Ps... fewer than 2% of people in the UK don't watch TV. Which means that 98% of those that we share this country with, don't hold the same views as us.....

I really love the media limited viewing, I used to do that but got away from that for a while and it’s depressing. I think a lot of your points are very relevant to daily living, not just for boaters. I especially liked and laughed out loud about when sadness sneaks up and yelling “f#$% off” hilarious! Thanks for this..

    I love how you cope with the feeling of misery creeping into the day by shouting at it to F off. Unfortunately, i have tried this on many occasions in built up areas, only to find the local constabulary being alerted to some nutjob shouting at a brick wall and upsetting the locals. Nowadays it only seems to happen when the Mother in Law visits.

    Hello Kevin. I discovered your narrow boat series on Amazon Video at Christmas and have watched all of the series and episodes over the holiday season, and loved them. So real and down to earth. So much better than watching rubbish on TV. And I loved your cooking segments. You are such a good cook and your food looks delicious. I hope you will do some more series as I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms! All the very best from an 85 year old fan.

Chasing the new car, the nicer house, the best phone, the latest tech, the trendy clothes. For what? Our lives have become much too complicated and uneccessarily so. I am envious of your life on the canals. Bravo Sir! You espouse much wisdom here.

    I’m watching you Travels By Narrowboat from the beginning and I forgot this episode. I really respect the advice you give. When my wife and I started dating we gave up the tv and after we were married we gave away the tv because we decided that it there was time to watch there was time to go on an adventure. Of course, we had our ups and downs with the tv, but today this video has renewed my need for adventures! My kids are going to hate me . . ., but we are turning of the imagination killer and spend our time taking adventures and one of this biggest adventures is cleaning their rooms!!
    Also, read the news about 1 hour total a week. Just enough to keep me conversational, but not enough to get depressed. Besides, there is scarcely anything new being reported.

    Phil has obviously started a bit of a trend. Interesting to hear your take on it Kevin. Well if I do end up on a boat by myself at least I will be halfway there - I have never smoked, I don't drink, I haven't bought a newspaper for over 40 years and I haven't watched the news for more than 10 years. I could easily give up watching tv too - apart from watching F1 and Gardeners World (and even that is getting too pc for my liking). Take care mate.

    Hey CHG, I've been really enjoying watching your series on Amazon Prime during the past few months.
    I remember (in Series 1, I believe) you stated you were in the middle of watching Star Trek: The Next Generation. I watched TNG for the first time within the past 10 years and it became my favorite show of all-time. In this video you recommend not watching TV as it is a monumental waste of time. I'd argue that shows like TNG (and others such as documentaries, etc) can be very stimulating and inspiring. I don't watch a lot of TV by any means, but was hoping you could comment on that.
    Will continue to watch all your shows. Thanks again, and cheers from California!

    • @CountryHouseGent
      @CountryHouseGent  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, I didn't word it quite well in the video, did I? ☺
      In hindsight, I'd change it to the mindless dross that's so prevalent on mainstream TV - including talent shows and the news.
      Stuff that stimulates the mind such as TNG, or even TBN, are heartily recommended, of course. 😊

I live alone (but not on a narrowboat) since my partner died, I did a lot of retail therapy thinking it would make me feel better (it didn't) and my main problem to tackle now is clutter.
