I love collecting firewood, I have since in the boy scouts which was a long time ago. I have now advanced to making charcoal. The best part of the narrowboats for me are the lovely cozy stoves.
Oh my gosh, what a horrible ordeal you've suffered. So sorry you had to go through that. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. I so glad you had the strength to carry on after a time . We must do so or the bad guys win. We love your vlogs . We are from the US, and were fascinated with the narrow boat world. Hope you have a wonderful peaceful holiday season.
As I’m catching up on your videos in a random order, being as it’s now May 2023 and I’ve just watched this one, can I ask - is there anything you can’t turn your hand to? Talk about capable! 👏👏👏
Hi CHG interesting vlog, I am glad you have shown the exercise example. I asked other narrow boat vloggers and got a load of sarcasm, don't know why. But there you go. Plod on.
Mizpah voyaged across the pond, hitch hiked from east to west until she found herself floating ever so merry-fully in the Sacramento River here in California....just yesterday it was, I was cruising on her whilst doing a bit of Salmon fishing! Cheers!
Hi -- We really enjoy watching your blog. The Mizpah you just showed is my wife’s uncles old boat (he had it built and named it Mizpah). Where is it moored? I am sure he would like to cruise past it some time or at least know where it is these days.
Kevin, Its great to see somebody who can look after a chainsaw.. Nice to see you back on this side of the fence (so to say)... Take care, Regards Steve
Nice one Kev. Delightful dip into your damp, sawdust ridden, chicken eating life! Looking forward to the vids. Keep smiling, keep floating, keep warm.......
Great vid! I used to have a 'log splitting bomb' that was like a conical pair of wedges. Drive it in with a mallet or sledgie and the one log split into four. Great fun :)
Nice chopping ~ Good technique there Mr Country House Gent ! Must be satisfying to use wood for heating / even cooking . That dish looks beyond tasty. I am very close myself to getting a wide beam norfolk broads cruiser with a wood burner
You're quite right. The satisfaction of knowing you're eating food you prepared and cooking it with wood you found and chopped, stimulates and pleases our earliest and most basic human instincts. :) Have fun on the widebeam.
'Loved your comments about your walking exercise vs the gym (only I find that while I may get rained on while walking, I do get pretty sweaty in the gym)! I often wonder if you have room for a bike on Aslan so your shopping trips are easier and quicker? I see this was last year's post ... a friendly tip about using your chainsaw to cut cordwood (I have the same model saw that you do and have cut cordwood for years) : Instead of propping your log up on another one, making a cut then forwarding the log after each cut or two, it is easier to simply lay the log right on the ground and cut partially through all the way down the length of the log. Then you can roll the log (cut side down) and complete the cuts from the top surface all the way back up. Much faster and easier on the old back and you won't bugger your saw chain in the dirt. I love your videos Kev, just started watching this past June, and hope you will be able to continue. Great content!
I wish I could live a simple life like yours on the canals... Really hard to do that living in Canada... I'd love to see your country at three miles per hour...
Excellent video. I'm up to season 4 now of you're video series. Fantastic stuff. It's definitely worth buying for a bargain price. One issue I do have with the videos is that they always leave me feeling hungry after I watch you're dinners :-) . Good luck
Mary had a little lamb, she also had a bear. I often saw Mary's lamb, but have never seen her bear. Keeping fit walking to the shops also saves on gym fees, which I tend to spend in pubs on the way.
Can't go wrong with a "Husky" chainsaw (I have a 378XP after trading in my 350). A bit overkill but get called into service of aid occasionally. Have you seen or tried the premixed fuel in a can? 99.5 RON petrol equivalent and premixed 50:1. It works slick as snot and doesn't go bad. Store it for years. No ethanol and such and won't harm the seals in your saw and can store for a long time in saw as well.

Woo Hoo Kevin I can't tell you how awesome it is to see your mug back here even if it is just a temporary thing! Oh an now I have to run to the shoppes and buy...you guessed it, mushrooms, potatoes, chicken, onion and green beans plus the American version of an Oxo cube. Have you consider running your saw on Aspen fuel? It comes pre mixed, is cleaner running than petrol and less polluting. Also has much longer shelf life than petrol. The only downside is it's more expensive.
Kevin, I guess living as you do out of tins are an acquired taste. Its something I very rarely try. But on a boat you rarely have access to fresh food unless you stumble across a farm shop on your travels.
You can always get a big bag of rice and noodles, pick and dry some mushrooms to use throughout a year, or pickle some cucumbers as they stay fresh forever. Get canned beans, sweetcorn, etc for cooking with "fresh" ingredients. Use flour to make stuff from scratch for best variety. When near a town, hop on the bike to buy eggs, milk, vegetables when you need them. I feel like chinese cooking would work well here, wok may be a good buy for boaters who want to learn it. One thing to note is DO NOT COOK in the original tin, they're all coated these days and you can slowly poison yourself without realizing it. Checkout www.reddit.com/r/gifrecipes for great, easy to learn cooking ideas.
