Super excited to have done Triad! Really technical piece, it's definitely one of my favourite parts from Danny. I also recently just got some new recording equipment, so I still have lots to learn. Please feel free to give me any pointers in relation to EQ and mic positions. I also just got some new heads for the kit so it sounds a little brighter, but I'll work them in. This one is going to be the last cover before I attempt the full Lateralus album in one take!
I consistently listen to this about once a week if not more. The drums just sound such more fuller in this then the studio recording. Love Danny's way of doing polyrhythms and this song is the icing on the cake for the Lateralus album. Its just such a primal sound and reminds me of some drums you would hear before marching into battle in the middle ages. Stellar job Tyler. You are an inspiration to me and I envy you for knowing how to play this because it opens the door to some of the techniques of Danny that he incorporates in so many of his pieces.
An absolute monster. My profile picture probably captures the emotion way better. I am guessing the band now knows who to call when Mr Carey goes on a vacation.
Great cover man. 4:15 and onward was very impressive. Definitely the most challenging area of the song and you killed it. Don’t wanna down play it but you are gonna have no problem doing Lateralus front to back. Looking forward to it
Thanks so much man, I really appreciate it! I can definitely agree, 4:15 onward is the most challenging section. It took a bit to build up the coordination!
I had to put on the headphones on for this to fully appreciate it. Far be it from me to say anything about eq or mic position or anything but this is my first impression take: the lows and low-mids on the low toms i felt ran into the kick a bit. On speakers, they seem to blend nicely but on headphones i felt that the low of the kick had a really nice punch and depth to it but ran into the low toms a bit in terms of raw clarity. I felt that the snare was really well placed and had a nice tone, but i think the low-mids on that were just a tad scooped. The way the cymbals all had their own voice was brilliant and the spatial boundaries between each drum was very nice and the balance on the drums felt good. I personally could use a bit more snare in the mix because the snare did sound good and i like to follow the rhythm of the snare but i wish it was less scooped. This is all from the perspective of the package as a whole sounded absolutely amazing and the minor tweaks above would allow me to enjoy just a small percentage more.
Thanks so much for the feedback man! That’s really going to help a lot. I definitely agree with you and I’ll take these into count for the album cover!
I really don't know anything about mixing and EQ, but that comment looks like good advice. At least from my (casual listener) perspective. Overall, indeed the low toms may be missing a bit of clarity, but it's still a great mix. Again maybe that's just me being ignorant but maybe a little bit more mids would be nice. I don't know exactly how much and which exact range, but I think it can be improved. I also felt like the snare was a bit too low (and maybe some cymbals, not sure about them tho). In any case, that's already a *huge* improvement compared to your previous setup. And considering that it's only your second cover with these, the result is already impressive! And of course, it's always nice to hear some good drumming!
Oh same thing in the outtro I like it. I'm really looking forward to the full album, Lateralus is in my top 5 of best albums ever made. Great job as always, keep slayin' Ty.

Absolutely amazing! I'd love to play this well, not minding having the will to understand and appreciate these things, at your age! Keep going!
Go on lad !!!
Tool is always very technical , Triad especially but you are smashing it :)
Exquisite cover dude, you nailed it. Snare sounds a little bit dry, but I'm no expert, just my perception. Great work.
The new equipment sounds good, looking forward to Lateralus in its entirety!
Thank you! I still have lots to learn about eq, but it’s a nice upgrade!

Love the kick pattern in this song

Have you seen the live version of triad?
Drum covers of favorite band on one channel. What could be better?
I thought my speakers were messed up to start. Did you do that fade in post?
Oh same thing in the outtro I like it. I'm really looking forward to the full album, Lateralus is in my top 5 of best albums ever made. Great job as always, keep slayin' Ty.
Thanks man! Yes I did the fade in post. I tried to keep the effect of the original version.
How long have you been playing for?
