    I’ve decided to wear my hair straight every 3 months. The fairy knots is what has been bothering me with wearing my curls, no matter what I do they come back but when my hair is straighten or blow dried, I don’t have that problem. So protective styles and flat iron will be my go to and i will wear my hair curly for a week every now and then. 🤷🏾‍♀️

      @Soundsforyou78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fairy knots are the worst!!! I wear my hair curly alot but it honestly is soo frustrating no matter what I do they come back. Only thing that helps is straight hair and protective styles such as braids or weaves... but yea.. fairy knots are awful 😭😭

    Relating to these topics on all levels. Cmon nowww! Get outta my head. I def been mentally planning my straight natural life. Having natural hair for me doesn't mean "keep it in that state"🙌🏽.

      @FinallyAmber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Yes! I'm the same way Destiny! To me, being natural just means no relaxers! Everyone can have their own definition that fits best for them but sometimes you just want to switch it up for a while that is ok!!

    I am so glad that you touched on the effects of social media. I gave up everything except TH-cam a year and half ago and it helped so much with my anxiety and the quality of my relationships. Mental health is so important!! ❤️❤️

    • @FinallyAmber
      @FinallyAmber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      YES "QUALITY OF RELATIONSHIPS!" That is big! Because you can maintain a relationship with people via social media only, but it DEFINITELY affects the QUALITY of those relationships. I'm going to be honest... if I ONLY talk to you via social media -- unless you're overseas and thats your only way of communicating with me -- I don't consider you as close as the other people in my direct circle. I have relationships I've STARTED on social media... but we still now nurture them in REAL ways via phone convos, etc. Social media can create a fake sense of closeness, while also creating anxiety over the need to "perform" for the people you love. Mental Health is the MOST important! I'm so glad so many people in the comments are relating to this 🙏🏾

    I deleted all my social media accounts a few years back (I was going down a depression spiral and wanted to make sure that that wasn't contributing to it). After I've gotten back a few (honestly just snapchat), I've realized how much I don't need it anymore

    • @FinallyAmber
      @FinallyAmber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      BINGO! Same here! Every time I've deleted a social media app, after the initial "what do I do now?" phase, I realized just how much it wasn't necessary when I try to go back. I deleted Twitter in 2010 and didn't come back until 2018.. when I first came back I was like "I don't think I can do this" lol Because it's almost overwhelming being hit with so many thoughts and opinions that you didn't have to "worry" about before! I've noticed the same with Facebook, now. After doing a 30 day fast, I went back to checking it on Saturdays only. Now I notice I forget every Saturday and I'm just like "whatever, I'm not missing anything" lol

    I had to take a giant step back myself . There’s a dark , nasty side to social media and it can draw you into a rabbit hole that just isn’t healthy and especially when the pandemic hit I had to re gather myself . I appreciate you mentioning that support given with good intentions whenever is giving is enough 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️because as a follower on social media sometimes I know I have felt in adequate not being able to comment as frequently or as soon on a post or a video and sometimes the way it is presented by an influencer could make you feel less if you’re not keeping up with those who are able to immediately respond.

  • @allofdestiny
    @allofdestiny 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    That influencer discussion def hit home. The balance between working on content all day then getting settled at night trying to support other creators and watch videos before bed can def become a daily draining race. Im slowly learning to tell myself, creators understand & reminding myself it's okay to not see every single post on time. Loved this video so very much Amber🙌🏽🌻💖

    • @FinallyAmber
      @FinallyAmber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      YESSS DESTINY YOU FEEL ME!! It really can be DRAININNNG! Trying to make sure I watch videos, like, show support... sometimes I don't even be having to energy to comment and then I would get into a cycle of feeling guilty for that even though I know I watched and liked... 😩 But I had to step off that wheel and remember that I will always receive what I put out when I do it when good intentions and love. If one missed post causes love lost then thats a sign I don't need to run myself ragged trying to maintain those unrealistic standards! Thank you watching girl! I'm glad you feel me!

    I was a straight natural with butt length hair!!!!! And then TH-cam convinced me to start wearing my hair curly and it ain’t been that length ever again lol. I want to get back to it...but via blow outs, i don’t even like
    Bone straight hair...but naturally curly hair doesn’t really bring me joy anymore. I’ve been keeping it in long term protective styles until i make a decision but....wash n god and twist outs will never bring me joy.

    • @FinallyAmber
      @FinallyAmber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Honestly I feel like my hair growth didn't change much when I went curly. I'll be honest and say my hair has always been pretty long and grown pretty fast but where most people said going natural just made their hair so much healthier.... eh lol My curls are definitely pretty and I'm happy to have bomb wash and gos... buuuut... aint nothing wrong with no straight natural hair! Folks not gone convince me otherwise lol So I feel you!

    • @littlebabybugjones2676
      @littlebabybugjones2676 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I swear that sounds like me kinda lol i used to KEEP my hair straight on the regular and my hair was halfway down my back and growing. Then it all went downhill and stayed that way after i started trying to wear it curly. Im going back to ‘my roots’ with the flat iron

    • @myrandomrants
      @myrandomrants 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn’t agree more. This is exactly where I’m at. I finally accepted that twist outs and WNG'S don’t work for MY hair. My hair thrives straight - way less mechanical damage and much easier for me to maintain. So I flipped the script - now I use curly and textured synthetic hair for protective styles and keep my natural hair blown out (I too hate my hair bone straight) 👌🏾💛

    • @tracyc.1005
      @tracyc.1005 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve decided not to wear my hair in any afro like state for the next 6 months. No wash n gos. I will be flat ironing once a month or else doing a blowout bi-weekly. I’m going to see if it’s easier to retain length and definitely easier to manage.

    • @mrod87
      @mrod87 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tracyc.1005 girl I’m still on it....I’ve been doing mini twists and roller sets...I’m trying to see what happens in the next few years with growth, but no more wash n goes or “natural” styles, I’m good.

    This “time” that we’ve been in has really forced me to look at how I view control. Naturally as a person and as an earth sign I feel like I need to have control over everything. And the things that have been happening in the world and in the country have forced me to really look at the fact that control isn’t real. For me this has been a super scary realization. I crave control and I crave order and plans and this year has been full of instances and the situations that have proved that plans and control can’t always happen. A way for me to deal with the lack of control has been to start my loc journey. I’ve been natural for about eight years now and thoroughly enjoyed it in the beginning because it was a way for me to have control over myself and over my hair. I was reaching a point in my teenage life and wanted to make a point that I had control over myself. However, for about a year now my natural hair has started to feel like a burden. I wasn’t taking care of my hair or doing my hair the way that I should have been but I couldn’t let it go because of my desire for control and the identity that I had placed in having full and long natural hair. So I started locking my hair and for me this whole journey has just been about relinquishing control and being okay with every phase of my life. All steps and phases of my life have not been the prettiest but they’re still a part of my overall journey. We’ve been in crazy times this year but I can say that I do genuinely appreciate the way that it’s forced me to reflect inwardly and make some much needed changes in my mindset.

I have always felt bad that I’m not on other platforms other than ig and TH-cam and feel like I may be missing out on opportunities to grow but hearing those words make me feel so much better because In reality it’s hard to juggle all those platforms and some of them I feel personally are just not for me, so it feels sooo good to hear you say that. Yesss! Some of the best piece of advice I've seen this year was from Mattie on Instagram and she basically said it's best to NOT be on some social media platforms at all if you're not interested in being consistent with it and just focus on the ones you can be on and enjoy and I loved that!

    Love this and thankful for your transparency! -- there is so much pressure and FOMO is a real thing... honestly social media will take as much as you give it, just like anything else .. I feel like this needs to be discussed more. We live our lives through the lens of social media and glimpses of other people lives through social platforms ... I wonder how we'll feel 40 years from now when we reflect and look back on this season of our life.

    I loved this video. Sometimes talking/chatting videos are the best. This video really spoke to me in so many ways. We can get caught up in so many things and neglect the the things we really need for ourselves. I am guilty. I forget to live in the moment sometimes but I’m working on putting my phone down more and whatever else takes up unnecessary time from me.

    • @FinallyAmber
      @FinallyAmber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree about talking videos! Especially for me! Sometimes I can get so caught up in my videos being "aesthetically pleasing" or drawing a certain goal that I OVERTHINK it and then I just spiral into talking myself out of it (the "perfection procrastination" I was talking about) -- when really really just sitting down and talking allows me to be more transparent and just put it all on the table and real!
      I definitely have been guilty of not living in the moment.. or worse... trying to make everything an "Instagram worthy moment" and that's just... yuck lol Now I honestly will forget where I put my phone because I've been into my DAY and not social media and I'm loving it!

    I can relate to being a planner. I can plan out everything but will i follow through with it... thats a different conversation lol. Its funny you mention the topic of straight hair. I made a vow that I was going to go all 2020 without straightening my hair just as a challenge and to see if I noticed any health difference. I have managed to keep my word but as soon as I seen you straighten your hair, I noticed my thoughts started to abandon my vows. I will keep my word since there's only a couple months left of 2020.
    I also strongly believe that social media is an addiction and i noticed your break from posting and I'm not mad at it. I think its something to be normalized because social media has almost become a dark hole. Thats a whole longgggg conversation. But I enjoyed this talk!

    I just started my business and I’ve been feeling so attached to social media and I hate it. I wish I could come off, but then you hear if you don’t post you’re not showing up for your business, so I definitely understand where you are coming from.

      Have you thought about using apps like Post Planner to plan your posts to stay active with your business without having to actually get on there yourself? You can see (preview) what they will look like before you post. Then you can set up “office hours” for when you can respond and engage!

    I've been natural for 10 years and straightened my hair once, but it only lasted a day lol. Being born in '91 your straight real hair paired with 'natural look' makeup reminds me of the 90's and all the black women on TV I admired 😍. Which makes me feel so nostalgic! But also kinda sad. It's like you said in the Left Eye Hair Tutorial Video, black women back then didn't wear their hair natural much. Hollywood & most of the Music industry didn't allow them to which is a whole 'notha subject.
    Did you see the video of Kat Graham doing her natural hair crying and said something like "I wish one day I could play someone who looks like me"? That was heartbreaking!
    I have to say I agree about social media breaks. Besides TH-cam, I haven't been on IG since March. At first I didn't know what to do with myself in a sense. But once I got over the "withdrawals" per say, I actually don't miss it.

    I’m... too gotdamn old, but I chopped off damn near all my hair at the beginning of “the current situation,” which I don’t wanna mention by name, but y’all know. 🌚 I just wanted to feel free, and I’d been sick of my hair not acting right. It had gotten the longest it had ever been, but I was like, “this take too damn long. It’s a lot of upkeep, and I’m in nursing school and tired.” I had a buzz cut for a whole year before, so I wasn’t a short hair newbie, but it was one of the biggest mistakes. It’s growing back, and I didn’t buzz it all off this time, but it’s at an awkward length, and I just wanna hide it all the time. I don’t feel confident anymore, but a main reason I cut it was because I was *that* afraid of straightening it. Like, I just didn’t want the heat damage and then have to shave it again. It was long winded, but I say all that to say that I wish I would’ve just listened to myself like you and did what I wanted to even despite the “dreaded heat damage.” I feel like people aren’t as bad as they used to be with the whole “heat will ruin your credit, kill your roots, ends, and next generation,” but I still felt that so strongly. I’m glad you straightened your hair. It’s not that serious. It’s just hair. I appreciate you, and if necessary, by my standards, I will follow suit. Thanks for being an example and being beautiful.
    And on the note of social media, I stopped using it in February of this year, and it’s helped me a lot. I don’t feel like I’m missing a damn thing but an influx of constant trauma and sadness, and we all got enough of that irl without having to feel guilty and sad over other things. Certain things would hang on my shoulders like a weighted blanket of lead. I remember I had to quit Twitter in college, because I was having multiple breakdowns WEEKLY just from reading/being exposed to so much trauma and hurt. I wasn’t even engaging with it. I followed a lot of black feminists and womanists that made me the woman I am today, and big ups to them: They are doing that. work. But that type of stuff ain’t for me. I ain’t built for it. Tbh, I don’t think humans are, in general, but that’s a whole nother conversation. 🙈
    Peace and sincere love and wellness to you and all that read this novel. ✨

    • @FinallyAmber
      @FinallyAmber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I read ALL of your "novel" lol I love comments like this under videos like this one because you're doing exactly what I hope this video does... provoke CONVERSATIONS! When I do chit-chat videos, I actually set aside most of day to being present and active in the comments because I want to CHIT and CHAT with yall lol So thank YOU for being the perfect commenter and engaging with me 😘
      But on to what you were saying! I've definitely been there... deathly afraid of "heat damage" and also just not wanting to hear the constant judgment from people about what I'm doing with my hair. Those drawbacks are REAL! And if you're someone who knows you will never want to wear your hair straight but every blue moon I totally agree that you shouldn't risk the temporary satisfaction of straight hair for maybe messing up your healthy curls! For me, at this point I feel like I've done EVERYTHING with my natural hair. Literally everything lol So I feel like it's just fun not to think about it too much for a while! Especially when it comes to heat damage... I'm like either I'll get tired of it and cut it off and have new content about growing my hair back... or I'll transition it out and have content about that too lol Life is a journey lol
      Lastly...I 100% agree! I don't think ANY of our brains are built to be keeping such close track of so many people at one time. I touched on this in the book video with "the Dunbar Study".

    I used to blowdry my hair once a week and my hair was thriving. I then airdried in twists for a year, spent a ton of money on products and about a quarter of my hair, near the root, broke off. Lost so much hair density. I was done. I started back blowdrying 2 days ago and will not be airdrying again.
