Henry Thomas, Jr., better known as Heck Thomas, was a young lawman in Georgia before he caught what he called “a severe case of Texas fever.” He became an express messenger on a railroad and then a self-made detective. He squared off with notorious outlaws like Sam Bass and the Lee Brothers, and earned a reputation that led him to Oklahoma Territory as a Deputy U.S. Marshal.

I love this podcast so much! Can't wait for the rest of the series! I actually found land in Wyoming that is within 5 miles of historic fort Phil Carney. I want to buy it so bad because of the story of Red Cloud. Can't wait to hear more accounts of the real legends of the west!

Thanks for the podcast. I like the way you present it with facts even when it shows the imperfections of our hero. There was only one perfect hero and he died a horrible death at the hands of the Romans. Heck's uncle Gen. Henry Lloyd Thomas is buried in my hometown. I put a penny on his stone every year. His father and all of his uncles were Col. and several cousins were Captains. I have been to all of the Guardsmen graves as well as several other deputy graves including Bass Reeves. I have been a history nut since high school. My history teacher did the research that got Gen. Thomas a new headstone because the old one was marked Col. I have done a lot of research on Heck and you presented facts I have never seen.

My cousins still have the Thomas last name my mom took my dads but he is like my great great grandad or something
