Yes....I can see light at the end of a VERY long tunnel. Having done those bushes lying under the car, I now have new found respect for those who have done the job before me! Mike
Hey Mike great work! I can appreciate the joys of rolling around trying to fix cars without a ramp. I just did the clutch on my pickup in the yard with the help of a trolly jack and a few large logs. I wanted to let you know I'll be relisting the 319 at a lower price. I dont really have the time to give it the fettling it needs and I'd really like someone to give it the new life it deserves otherwise its going to go back in my barn for a few more years and i think thats a waste. Anyway let me know if youre still interested. Cheers
Hi - I'd like to come down with the boss (wife...) and take a look at your van. With your permission, I will do a video walk around, and if I dont buy the van could maybe upload a video to the channel to help you sell it? Some of the recent auction prices for old mercs have been down right depressing. Did you see the pick up truck version of the 319 in auction recently? It would make you want to weep. Mike
Yes I saw the pick up. Good job I wasn't at that auction or I would have bought it. I couldn't let mine go anywhere near that cheap, I've spent too much on it and I'm not desperate for the money. I would just prefer something smaller as it takes up space in my barn and I'd prefer to fill it with vehicles I'm more likely to use. You would be welcome to come and have a look and do a video as long as I don't have to be in it 😄
@@JML319van Yes...I think I would have bought it too for that price!!....I have to do some work down in St Austell and am just waiting for confirmation of dates and will contact you to arrange a viewing. Yep...it really has been a long journey - luckily I have a very patient wife who will be delighted to see the front grill, door car etc removed from under the bed! Mike
Yes...too many of these old SL's are neglected. The strange thing about my other SL getting stolen was that I had temporarily moved it from my very un-secure garage (from which my welder was stolen) to a supposedly secure unit where I keep the Pagoda and Fiat 238. That unit has indeed beefed up the security after that break in. Mike
Hi Mike, this seems to be the best video to ask my question. My recent 380SL purchase is a 1985 with less than 60,000 miles. I am in the sorting out stage. First it was the rough idle (tech adjusted with a tool in the center of the air cleaner). Problems with hot starts. It was in the shop for a week for testing and this past weekend it is still doing it. Then the car surges after starting. Colds starts are fine. Upon driving a short distance it feels like someone is pushing the car faster than I can drive it. After it left the shop, the surging started. Took it back and parked in front of the shop and it continued. The tech shut off the AC (on for testing I guess) and it stopped. I have never used the AC because it needs sorting out. Next, does the fuel pump on your SL whine or make a whirring noise? Mine does not hiss but it is more like a mechanical whining. Just wondering if you or anyone has experienced these issues with their SL. Thanks
Congratulations! Could you show the automatic transmission oil level with the engine off and the engine idling? I have a problem with the automatic transmission of my 1975 Mercedes 280SE and it could be the oil level. Thank you!
What is the problem with your transmission? I got a shock in both my 230sl and the SL55 when the transmission fluid was low and they started jumping out of gear and all sorts of other nasty things. With the engine running at idle, the oil level on the dip stick should fall from above the mark to the full mark as the torque convertor and rest of the gear box fills up with oil. If and when I get my car up to temperature, I'll try and show this on the dip stick. Mike
@@MikesMercsandothercars My transmission shifts gears well, but it suddenly stops working. The oil level is difficult to adjust. If the oil is cold and idling, the level is one, if the oil gets hot it is another. If you accelerate and the transmission starts to shift gears it is another, because the oil comes out of the converter. Very difficult to adjust the level. If you make a video on the subject I would appreciate it.
@@marcosortolani3639When you say "It suddenly stops working" what exactly do you mean eg et suddenly wont shift...or it suddenly jumps out of gear...or the engine cuts out etc...I'm assuming your car is an automatic? Mike
@@MikesMercsandothercars Yes, my transmission is an automatic, 722.103. I constantly have a pressure gauge to measure the modulation pressure. When the defect occurs, the modulation pressure drops to zero. I have to accelerate above 4000 rpm for the pressure to reestablish itself.
@@marcosortolani3639 Its probably a stupid question...and you probably know far more about this subject that I ever will but....As I understand it, the transmission pressure is modulated using engine vacuum to ensure smooth gear changes etc. The modulator itself has a diaphragm within it which responds to engine vacuum. Once again I could be completely wrong, but the modulator is part 228 on the 2nd diagram below: nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/mercedes/1/ga/722103/08h/27/001/ Ebay item number 165551898620 Mike
Hi Mike. My R107, 1984 model (LHD) is very thankful for your very helpful explanation on the "how to" the various restorations on it. Is there some way of contacting you on the phone for a few minor clarifications?
Hey Mike, I went through your video on the exterior trim on the doors to repair mine. I'm having difficulty in removing the ends of the trim to insert the screwy bolt that goes on one side of the trim. Any suggestion on how to do it without damaging the ends?
Well done Mike. Must be very satisfying to have it move under its own power. I agree those bushes are a real pain!

yes - super pleased. Every long journey starts with one small step! Now we just need to see what happens when we take her on a longer drive... Mike
Congrats ! Really good job. I have to do my bushing too 😅
Doing the bushings makes a big difference to the firmness of the shift lever....and is not too bad a job using the 'hose clamp' hack. Mike
