Working in colored pencils, for three years all I used were the three primaries. For successful blending purposes, I allowed myself a warm version and a cool version of each primary. It was a fantastic exercise for honing my sense of color and loosening myself up.

Thank you Sandi for more inspiration! I can get so bogged down with more supplies, more colors, more expensive supplies. Thinking I have to have one of everything from Dick Blicks. 😁 But breaking it down to basic color theory with my inktense pencils is what I need to practice. I already have an idea for some florals after watching your video. Sometimes the best thing we can do is go back to basics, even if we are in our studio surrounded by tons of supplies. ❤

That was fun! I've always been cheap, but learned that being the right kind of cheap makes a big difference! When I started watercolors, I bought Arches. It made all the difference! When these Inktense pencils came out I bought some, the reds, yellows, blues, black and white - keeping an eye on lightfastness because I realized that in the middle of the great awakening to that in the 90s, about half of their colors are not lightfast. Sigh. I really appreciate watching you put the painting together! Their permanency when wet made it easier to layer than watercolor pencils are! The real reason I'm fussy about permanency is that I like to have my favorites out and, sadly, I've watched things disappear.

Thank you for this! The topic seemed a little out of left field and yet it was so informative. The limited palette experiment is really interesting (and I’m someone who buys way too many color and gets overwhelmed) but the number one thing I’ve been taking away from your recent videos showing water-soluble media is the use of fingers for activating (and also using the broad side of things like the Neocolor II.) It’s like a revelation! It just never even crossed my mind to do this. I don’t have the Inktense pencils but I do have a couple brands of other water-soluble colored pencils, and I have quite a large number of open stock Inktense blocks, which I have largely abandoned in favor of the Neocolor II wax pastels. Maybe the blocks would work well for even looser/larger works than you might make with the pencils. I have all these water-soluble materials and never really knew where they fit in because I also have a variety of watercolor, gouache, etc.. Using my fingers instead of a brush was somehow a huge game changer. The marks and washes that result are so different. So now I have to go look at my Inktense blocks…. (The blocks, by the way, are supposedly better than the Neocolor II for use on fabric and that is why I originally bought them.)

    • @sandihester

I’m so glad this was a revelation video!!! 🙌! Have fun getting reintroduced to all your water soluble supplies!

@@sandihester I pulled out the Inktense blocks tonight (though was dismayed to see that despite having about 35 of them I am missing almost all of the colors you used.) I was reminded of why I gave them up - I just don’t like how they feel when dry… quite a lot like a conte crayon, and they create a bit of dust. But man are they fun to use with wet fingers! It’s a totally different experience and there’s less risk of using too much water or accidentally pulling off too much pigment (as some brushes do.) I can now see their potential for vivid and even opaque painterly results, and not just the watercolor effects they’re also so good at producing. Thanks for putting Inktense back in my mind.

I too have a difficult time being loose with pencils. I really love what you did. Can you please say again which three colors made the final cut? Thank you.

Treating that watercolour brush a little more gently this week haha! Hilda looked great...I do tend to use a fairly limited palette most of the time...makes me wonder why I have so many paints that I don't use 😂

Snap! I was just shopping for pencils haha! A really great demo Sandi thanks so much. I also have a query.. I just realised that gouache comes in both water soluble and acrylic! which I wasnt aware. I was wondering why I couldnt re constitute my gouache! Could you maybe talk a little about gouache and the differences, and is it better than basic flat acrylic, because the price is much higher than flat acrylics. Sorry, long comment. thanks again!

Gouache overall is going to be flatter than any acrylic gouache.

Great video, Sandi! I really love the original painting of Hilda (the one in your dining room gallery) and your new tri-chromatic painting is equally beautiful. It has different techniques/qualities/emotions etc'. Fascinating & super-inspiring at the same time!
Btw, I'd really like your professional help. Is it possible to turn the most basic gouache paints into acrylic ones? (I think I've heard something about adding PVA glue, however I really don't know if it's true and what are the right quantities / ratios for each of the materials (gouache vs. glue). I'd really appreciate your input & wide knowledge! Thanks a L-O-T!

FYI - I've tried clicking on your supply links on a few videos and they go NOWHERE! I thought you might want to see what is going on!

I've heard that from a few people and as I checked with my other YT friends they've said it has to do with your web browser blocking it. You could try copy and pasting the links. I'm so sorry they're not working for you!

@@sandihester It was odd - it wasn't my browser since I could get other links - it was just yours! I checked with other videos of yours and couldn't get them either. It may have been a glitch....
