The greatest show of my childhood. The range of emotional tugging, then laughter, and discovering people are people no matter what color. Beautiful show
Amazing how South Pacific explored so many emotional and social issues, yet remained entertaining. Similarly, Carousel has the dark theme of domestic violence, poverty, social deprivation.
Singin In The Rain - 1952 and South Pacific - 1958 are the 2 best Color Movie Musicals of the 1950s, both transcendental irresistible and unforgettable cinematic experiences, glowing colors, lilting haunting songs.
Yes there were many TOP MUSICALS turned into exellent movies in the Fifities and Sixties like THE KING AND I, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS or GUYS AND DOLLS but also some regrettably forgotten ones like the Sixties Version of BAKER STREET, the Sherlock Holmes - theme Musical or QUOTE UNQUOTE about FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT
Every time this musical came on the TV, my parents would watch it and I would sit with them. The songs are fantastic, but one of them still sticks in my mind today because it is so true what they sang about . These are the words that l remember. You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late To hate all the people, your relatives hate Before you are six or seven or eight You’ve got to be carefully taught . I think these words ring so true if you think of Israel Gazza and Ukraine Hate is a horrible thing .♥️
I’ve read that the producers of the original stage production didn’t want that song as it was too racially sensitive. But Rodgers and Hammerstein said that if it weren’t included they’d withdraw the whole thing.
Rodgers and Hammerstein produced the most wonderful musicals of all time. True geniuses, they have brought so much joy into the world. I didn't understand why my father liked this musical so much; he was in WW2, and i think to him the song "some enchanted evening" was special.
Thank you Giorgio Tozzi for singing Some Enchanted Evening and not being given the credit for singing this role until years later. YOU were and OUTSTANDING man, friend and EXCELLENT Vocal Coach!!! Thank you ,,, I hope you and Monte are loving Heaven!!
The Todd AO format of this picture is the most beautiful Hollywood film ever. If you can tear yourself away from the music and excellent performances, you may notice that the colors are extraordinary; the color filters used in the musical sequences work very well--and the locations are jaw-dropping. Miss Gaynor gives the best performance of her career--Oscar calibre.
I am almost 90 years of age, and I saw this film when it first came into English cinemas. That is the moment that I fell in love with Mitzi Gaynor, and I am sitting at my PC.....6.15 AM watching this film again (God Knows how many times I have watched it)....and I still feel exactly the same as I did the first time seeing it. They don`t know how to make movies like this anymore.
I recently donated this album to a charity fundraiser for sale. I hope the person who bought this really enjoys it understands what it represents. My father served in the South Pacific This was his album.
I still have the soundtrack-album of this film that my parents bought when it came out, its beautiful, it's like a book - as a child I was fascinated with it and it still means something very special to me !
Heartbreaking how Liat didn’t really need to be told that Cable was dead. You can see in her face, through France Nuyen’s incredible performance … somehow she just knew. And just when she vowed she’d never marry anyone but him. They were soulmates. Since Bloody Mary had so completely turned against Cable before, I think there’s a chance she changed her mind because Liat was carrying his child. Which would make this even more heartbreaking. But I prefer the idea that rather than being forced to submit due to a pregnancy, Mary finally realized her daughter’s happiness was what really mattered and agreed to try to find Cable and make things right. It’s hard to imagine the level of guilt that Mary must’ve felt upon learning of Cable’s death, knowing if she hadn’t given up on him and instead convinced him to stay, then he never would’ve gone on that mission.
Here the musical did not followed the novel SOUTH PACIFIC by JAMES A. MITCHENER it is based on . There exists just a short story in which an American Nurse rejects a Plantage Owner because of the " RACIAL MIXED HERITAGE " of his family. referring as critcism to the Racism in the US ARMY in those days.
I don't know where I saw this ending, I keep thinking it was South Pacific but could have been another movie. Where an Asian girl had a son by an American soldier and after the war, she goes to America to meet his parents and introduce his son. Does anyone else remember this from South Pacific or any other movie.
The album of this movie was the first one we bought after installing a radiogram - it was more of a furniture item than a device for playing records, but I don't suppose we cared about it's probably poor reproduction of the music as we played that album incessantly.
She should have been Oscar nominated.
One of my top 10 shows of all time.
Ever since I saw this as a little girl with my grandmother, it has always been my most favorite musical

Some enchanted evening makes me cry.

Beautiful. May Ms. Gaynor Rest In Peace and thanking her for her spectacular performance.
Sadly they don't make movies like this anymore!

The best musical ever, for my money.
Love this, too! ❤❤❤

I wish they still made movies like this one.
Despite being dubbed, Rossano Brazzi was perfect for this role. He was fine af.
Thanks for posting this uncut version.
Wonderful song. Mitzi is great, and she should have at least an Oscar nomination.

Wonderful!
I was so sorry and moved by the fact that Miss Gaynor had passed away. She was at rue star in all that she accomplished. RIP dear lady....
Hollywood just doesn't make movies like this anymore. Golden, just golden!
Some of the best Entertainment is from/Broadway/and hollywood.

R.I.P. Mitzi love you.

My uncle was there. Went from private to major. Secretly supplied coast watchers by sub. Destroyed his back carrying supplies for them.
Our version of SOUTH PACIFIC opened a week after 9/11. And the show did go on. Queens, New York, I love you! ❤
Mitzi Gaynor was a fine dramatic actress.
Oscar Hammerstein was certainly a man before his time.

High heels on a tropical island. Entirely possible.
A masterpiece🎉🎉🎉
Goodbye Nelly, this scene is so touching.
RIP Mitzi!
Billis was a character but he cared about Miss Forbush and DeBeck.
Most movies today are garbage & trashy.
This was a classic.
I loved Mitzi Gaynor
Yeah ... so many of those guys didn't come back ...
.
Sad. I think Liat realized Cable was dead. :(
Yes RIP Mitzi. Can someone please confirm did they dub over her voice in the singing?
She’s one of the few in this movie who wasn’t dubbed.
The album of this movie was the first one we bought after installing a radiogram - it was more of a furniture item than a device for playing records, but I don't suppose we cared about it's probably poor reproduction of the music as we played that album incessantly.
So much of the time everybody looks as if they have hepatitis! It's that yellow lens.
Why wasn't Mary Martin casted?
SHE originated the role!
She was too old by the time the movie was finally made. And, Ezio Pinza was already dead.
No hay manera de quitarle wl filtro?
What ‘filter’?
Some of the scenes were filtered with yellow.
What did Cable die from?
He died of wounds sustained in combat. Remember, this musical was set during World War 2.
Where's Luther now
I really believe Doris Day who was in line to play Nellie would have been more effective than Mitzi in this particular scene.
I love Doris Day....but I couldn't disagree more. Mitzi Gaynor was just perfect for this role.
@@happydays3678To each their own.
Nooooo
Doris would have bene great we already have great in Mitzi.
@@44032 no, just good.
