  • For 70 years, Trappist monks worshipped and worked in Utah’s Ogden Valley. On August 27, 2017, they celebrated their last mass. The Abbey of Our Lady of the Holy Trinity is now closed, but as they were packing, we travelled to Huntsville to find out what it means to close a monastery.

    I wept all through the video. I pray all with be well for the remaining monks. Such dedication to a life of service, God bless all the monks who had built this community. I am well past 40 years otherwise I would gladly join the brothers in a heart beat. Come forth young people, hear the call to service. Bless you all.

      Don't you have anything else to do? What do you mean you wept all through? Their way of life and the narratives they have to support it, ain't working. No one can stand up and admit it. They all pretend it is the fault of the secularism or modernism, or this or that. If one can't look in the mirror and see one's face clearly, one is blind and destined to fall trying to walk. It is over!

    In Thomas Merton's first diary which is written in the early 1940's at the Abbey of Gethsemani, he talks about the "new foundation" in Utah. He tells how Gethsemani is so overpopulated with monks that they had to start new abbeys in other parts of the country, and how Dom Frederick set out for Utah to find a place there. They needed privacy and land suitable for farming. The foundation was not exactly welcome by the inhabitants of Utah, and gave Dom Frederick some problems in buying the land, so when 30 monks set out for Utah, Dom Frederick had them pack their possessions in whiskey boxes.
    Merton recounts the whole abbey coming out to send the 30 monks off, and Merton said that clearly Dom Frederick had sent the best that Gethsemani had.

    Honestly so sad, I remember growing up coming here once or twice a month. Those were the best memories I ever had. I am absolutely heartbroken that I took advantage of it growing up and didn't care too much to involve myself with the services and pay full attention. I would give anything to be able to walk inside one more time to sit down, pray, and reflect on my life. Such a beautiful, peaceful, and enlightening place.

      I was heartbroken when I returned to Liverpool, England, after living abroad for some years to find that the Monastery of the Poor Clares Colettines of Green Lane had been closed and demolished. The few elderly nuns had moved to join a community in York. This was a similar story throughout the country. I was once a brother in Erdington Abbey, Birmingham, England, It is now a non-catholic girls school.

    Heartbreaking to see Our Lady alone... though I know she most definitely is not. On the altar, is it like de-commissioned after a monastery closes? How does that work? Also, what will become of the brothers' graves whom went to sleep with God until the resurrection? We must remember, like this world, these are temporary places until re-united with our Lord... that's how I keep from feeling sad. And how sad the last 6 monks were all sent to a 'old folks home' to finish their days. They would've had more peace at the monastery. Isn't there a retirement place within SLC for Catholic priests!

    And having been to SLC countless times growing up, I'm sure every monk who re-located there wishes to be back in that farmland of quiet and peace. Such a shame medical personnel couldn't have been placed there, to care for the aging at what was their home. Praying this new generation of men growing up will come to the table with Jesus, heed the call to aid souls to heaven. Such a selfish world we're in ... pray for them all ... every man woman and child. And especially for the priests, God' hands in this world.

      The reason is why the whole church is collapsing.... The heresy of modernism. They became "of the world" thinking this would attract more vocations. The opposite took place!!! They have lost the faith!!!

    • @sistermadrigalmorning233
      @sistermadrigalmorning233 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Let us have faith that God guides vocations. This is sad, but perhaps God has decided a different geographical region needs those monks. Or yes, perhaps some men are ignoring their vocation, in which case we should pray and make sure young people do consider religious life.

    • @thomasmcnerney9745
      @thomasmcnerney9745 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sistermadrigalmorning233 God sends them many vocations...especially to monasteries here in the East. Unfortunately there are some very narcissistic vocation directors who make it almost impossible for men to be accepted.
      The Trappists seem to be dying on the vine for many reasons. Some are due to their own inner failings and some rabbits are extremely ill equipped to handle the aging vocation. No longer are the youngsters coming to religious life...yet the Trappists do not seem to have embraced such awareness to survive.

    The word "Socialism" is not in favor today in the USA, but reading the Rule of St. Benedict, IMO, a person can see a societal (cenobitic) life-style that is completely social: selfless; sacrificing; Sacramental. "All for One; One for all".

      Socialism is a coercive ordering of property, goods and means of production by the STATE and its legal organs. Voluntary sharing based on religious conviction, in enclosed communities, has nothing to do with the force of government.

    I myself grown up in that left the catholic 1200 years tradition in münsterland, westphalia. there is no religious feeling left in me, no cult, no prayer even.
    there is the feeling of DIVINE in everyting, holy nature, our ancient germanic-celtic traditons, our old gods and goddesses, the indian influence of integral yoga,
    doing good all the time, be full of intelligence, individuality, virtues. the DIVINE in its manifested aspect is dynamic, bringing us to more and more consciousness. there is no paradise, no heaven waiting for us, but the task to create a divine garden on the planet, the everlasting moment of here and now.
