  • Day 6 of "365 Days of Plants" is on this cute chubby plant known as Gasteria glomerata. Given their characteristic shape and smoothness, the genus is commonly known as "ox tongue" (I suppose for its resemblance to an ox's tongue, though admittedly, the only bovine I've ever gotten close enough to is a cow), but never really thoroughly inspected its tongue. That being said, this species of Gasteria is a bit more ... ahem ... rubenesque than its other counterparts, but I think that makes it quite cute.
I'll cover a bit more of Gasteria care here, including lighting, watering, fertilizing, propagating and more! And if you recall, I highlighted this guy also in 6 Easy (and Unusual) Houseplants for Beginners in Episode 111: • Six Easy (and Underrat... .

I've never seen this, so cute!! It went straight into my planticorn wishlist!!! 😊
And here are the nerd facts: gasteria comes from the ancient greek word γαστήρ (gastír) which means stomach (gastroscopy comes from that word too) and glomerata is a latin word which means to form into a ball / agglomerate.
Sorry if I'm annoying you with that, I love etymology, it's so fun!!
    😁

Hi Summer! Cute little succulent! I'm just trying to get into succulents again as I haven't had good luck with them before, but really like them. Thank you for sharing!

Don't have one of these succulents yet, I might consider getting one, they seem fairly easy to grow, thanks again Summer, loving this series.

Summer, can I pick your brains about something? You talk here of 2 different cacti-style fertilizers, but my local nursery recommended one-fertilizer-fits-all for my plants, saying they use it for ALL their own plants. It's a fresh seaweed concentrate that indicates 0.6-C-6. I know seaweed or fish fertilizer is highly recommended as a rule but I'm always wary of one-fits-all... And from watching your videos, I'm aware you really customize to the plant's need and profile, getting to know what makes them tick based on origin, structure, exposure, etc.

Thanks! I love gasterias. I have some planted outside in my back garden and they have grown huge- a few feet long/wide! Ikea sells them cheaply and has a great range of different varieties and also has haworthias.
