    Worth noting that MTX-R to MTX-RC is simply the fact that the 2nd stage balance preload adjuster knob is external. You can fit the -RC parts to the -R. However, the balance adj is still there on the -R, it's just hidden under a little plastic cap (which should be the first thing you take off and chuck away because it traps salt water and causes corrosion!) and a 5mm allen key adjusts the preload. With mine, i ve never found the need to adjust it when used with a balanced 1st stage that results in practically zero IP drift with PP changes anway :-)

    Great commentary on the inter-agency .animosity. No agency is perfect, all are balancing the skills vs time vs availability equation as best they can, and all are effectively teaching the same skills for the time you are learning. All the animosity achieves is throwing up walls between the diving groups, and give the vocal minority a chance to feel good about their limited lives.

      Have the Zen it’s fantastic. Only thing is if you’re coming from a traditional steel plate I’d get a couple of trim pockets.

    Good work Markeeeeeeeee. Good debate about dive centres. I don't think many people realise how much effort goes into running them? When you're on holiday, remember that the dive centre is someones business and provides a livelihood for many people, and is probably developing the next generation of divers and instructors. Treat them fairly and use your training. I've seen shocking behaviour from ALL agencies; if you stood back and looked in, anyone would be horrified to think some of these people are about to take part in a sport which requires concentration and an element of life support!

      Hey Fella, yeah, I like to think that it also happens to a certain degree in other sports and it's not just us.
      And if your local Dive Centre shuts down because all of their revenue ends up abroad it's gonna be tough to pump up your tanks with a bicycle pump 😋

    Bought a new mask last fall, fitted perfectly in the shop but keeps leaking when diving... of course... the bloody mouth piece, never thought about that. Buying a mask, shops should through in a mouth piece for free.
    Your comments to James' video 44:42 are so valid and I have to think that most professionals agree with it. Allow me to share a part of my story.
    I started diving when I was 10... 30 years ago (dam, can't believe how old I got), first at a local dive club (not a center, bunch of scuba old timers sharing a compressor at the public pool, some of them dived with Hans Haas, who I was lucky to meet as well). Soon I crossed to PADI (and started spending every birthday and xmas gift on diving). I even chose to study biomed engineering because I was dreaming on developing own rebreathers. (it came very different). Never made it to DM, mainly because it was too expensive and there is the point.
    I believe there would be many young people who would feel similar excitement as when we started out. But just looking back and at the dive industry today... it all became somehow only about buying stuff. To excite young kids it does not need a bloody Bubble Maker! It needs someone who hands a 10 year old kid the regulator at the public pool and let him/her take a couple of breaths underwater and bang... you have someone hooked. Today we worry about liabilities and certifications. I would wish that we somehow get a bit independence back, away from the commercialized certification agencies, a bit more freedom to choose, I hope ideas like a "uber" for dive guides and instructors some how evolves soon. I don't want to pay 50 bucks for two dives, I want to grab a tank and find some adventure.
    Cheers!

      Yeah, a buddy and I (both Instructors) went to the Red Sea a few years back looking for a new dive centre to bring students to, but none of the Dive Centres we spoke to we're willing to let us just hire tanks and lead, it was only guided tours.
      Everybody is worried about litigation IF something happens so they go to the safest option, which is usually PADI, because everything is spelled out and there are clear liability release waivers.
      One of the worst parts, for me, is the Dive Shows over here. They're just car boot sales fighting to sell equipment at the lowest price, so customers hold off buying equipment beforehand because they know they'll probably get a discount if they wait a bit. And don't get me started on free Suunto Transmitters...

    Hi, could you please comment on so-called hot dipped scuba tanks? Do you use them? I’m planning on buying a tank these days, so some information would be really appreciated. As far as I heard the hot dipped tanks are lighter (but this weight needs to be added somewhere to make up for the extra buoyancy) and should be a bit more durable, but I wonder if the extra expense of 50€ makes sense. Thank you, bye

    Hi Mark. Have you been to the Go Diving show in Coventry yet? I’ve been the last couple of years and it was really good, recommend it if you haven’t been. Would love to see you do a talk on one of the stages there.
    Also agree with the dive shop comments, a lot of them are definitely like that. My dive shop (Aquanauts, Plymouth) have just invested in a massive new makeover for the inside/outside of the shop, and they’re introducing a lot of cool news things to the dive club. Would love to have you down in Plymouth for some dives 👌🏼

    Hi Mark, I recently switched from a jacket BCD to a BP/W & have found it much easier to stay horizontal with the air on my back but I don’t think I’m getting the full benefit as I was taught to use the dry suit for underwater buoyancy control & not the BCD. What are your thoughts?

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to teach that you should only use your BCD on the surface when you're in a drysuit because the air doubles up as insulation.
      There's nothing wrong in using your BCD so you get nice trim, and then top up your drysuit if you need to. All you have to remember is that you may need to dump both as you ascend.
      Personally, I put some gas into my suit as I descend to alleviate the squeeze and then I use my BCD. My drysuit's auto-dump purges any expanding gas by itself so I only need to think about my BCD.

    Hello I am a recreational diver from south Florida in the process going backplate and wing setup. I’m torn between the apeks setups or the mares Xr setup. What’s your take on those setups and which would you prefer . Also can the Xr backplate fit an apeks wing.

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer the Apeks inflator, and older Mares bladders had the kidney dump on the right which was odd, but I think they've corrected this now. I'm also not a fan of webbing with the branding all over it which put me off the Mares, but the wings and backplate are nice.
      The Apeks backplate has a long slot at the bottom so you shouldn't have a problem fitting a Mares wing to it.
      The Apeks is more traditional and the Mares more modern. Either will suit you fine, Apeks have a greater range of accessories though for integrated weights etc.

    • @k954triniz
      @k954triniz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay . I am thinking about getting the mares xr backplate and installing an apeks wing bladder. I know the apeks backplate has one more hole at the upper section of the plate for the bladder to attach to. But I’ve noticed the mares has one less. Do you think that would be an issue?

    hi mark! hope everything is fine with you
    i was thinking of buying an oxygen clean reg to use on 100% oxygen stages. i was thinking of getting a scubapro mk25 first stage like the rest of my setup, but i think it's way too much first stage to use only at 6m depth. so i need your opinion on that; should i keep my entire setup identical or should i get something like a mk2 since it will only be used at 6m on 100% oxygen?
    another question: as an instructor, do you believe open water skills should be taught with students on their knees or in trim position?

    I am looking to switch to a backplate and wing for my next bcd. I do mostly colder water dives but occasionally will travel. For this I’m looking for recommendations on a steel backplate and a aluminum backplate that can use the same wing. I was originally going to use the xdeep zen then get a mares xr steel backplate to switch to when I am diving in cold water. Someone told me that xdeep wings won’t work with other backplates. Is this true and if so what do you recommend using.

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, XDEEP backplates don't always line up with other brands. The Zen has a unique harness layout so it'll be tricky to swap harnesses back and forth between brands. The Zen comes in both Steel and Ali backplates so you do have that choice.
      Personally I wouldn't bother with the 2nd plate. You only gain about 1kg of weight which can go on your belt. So I'd buy the light ali plate Zen to travel and then just use that at home too. If I want to switch to twins I'd just switch to the Project Wing and invest in the steel plate if I had the money.

    Hi mark. What are your thoughts on the HOG D3 first stage and HOG Zenith regulator? I’ve heard mixed reviews, some people staying they are extremely underpriced for what they offer and others saying they are cheap knock-offs of more expensive brands. Not too much info out there about them.

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't comment on HOG gear, they don't exist over here and I've never seen them in my travels. So I can't say either way,
      Maybe one of my other commenters can help

      @@c11peterson I use the HOG Zenith and D3 regulator. I absolutely love mine. I think it breathes better than my old Oceanic Delta 4 regulator setup. They are a US brand, and they are highly recommended by the Cave and many Tech divers here. I have taken mine down to 116 feet and in heavy current without any issues, and also going inverted at that depth peering into holes in a wreck. I highly recommend them. In regards to their cost, yes they are less expensive than any other regulator on the market. They are able to sell these at these cheaper prices because they do not pay for advertising. Their advertising comes from diver's word of mouth. Their market is also limited. I can only think of two dive shops (off the top of my head) who sell them, Divers Supply and Dive Right into Scuba. Hope this helps. Let me know if I can help ya out any further.

    Hi mark,
    I’ve recently switched to a DIR style BPW.
    Do you know if there is a decent way to paint my backplate? I want it black but I think spray paint will just end up chipping off into the sea.

    • @SafeDiving
      @SafeDiving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen some divers use water transfer printing onto backplates. I've never tried it myself but I've asked Mares how they do theirs and I'll let you know what they say...
