one of those electric magnetic oil pan warmers put on the inside cylinder and turned on for a few hours every day might help as you well know patience is a weapon
Nice, Roadking. This looks like the easiest way to give that piston a chance to get going again. If that doesn't work, I know you guys will take the next step(s) to make it work again. Fun to watch.
One diesel I rebuilt had 12 inch pistons and that was the small one. That was aboard a Coast Guard Buoy Tender from the 40s. The other Cutter had 18 inch pistons.
i made a hydro jack tool that attaches to the big rod end.. and applies about 1000lbs of pressure and then just tap the cyl with a rubber mallet a few times until it comes lose..
Wow, I've never seen a pumpkin in a tree before, never even knew that could happen. Good luck with the coolaid, I did an acid bath once (vinegar) and that removed the rust. Then I hit it with diesel for a week. Ive heard of using transmission fluid, but never had it kicking around.
Hi Road King / Buddy/ A couple of ideas that have worked for me... make a fire in the hopper... or dump hot briquettes in there ... or better yet turn it upside down and make a fire under the hopper... heat really helps free the piston... also atf and acetone are the best penetrant... use a plate and a pressure washer to push out the piston... just some thoughts... maybe you or others already know about it... good luck... keep the vids coming!
Can you put the end cap on the big end, pit a rope through it, chock the engine so it won't move and pull it with a car/ jack while tapping the cylinder in the water hopper?
I wonder if you guys could use that concoction and some compressed air. So i had this older BMW motor and i really wanted to make it work, was my great grandpa's motorcycle and it was completely rusted inside the left cylinder. An old timer told me to simply fill the cylinder with kerosene and liquid paraffin and then he made me a fitting that went in the spark plug hole and fit to a compressed air hose. It freed up the piston in 3 4 days from so much rust that i actually had to de-line the cylinder for a sleeve. I might be wrong on the mix that went inside, this was 10 or 12 years ago, barely knew anything back then.
It's gunna take some time I recon...I had to unseize a boat engine once to use the block and crank and heads...Lots of soaking and banging on stuff. There's a vid of the outcome somewhere.
What if you cap it off and then heat the cylinder. I know this sometimes works with stuck caliper bolt as long as there is some grease in there. As you heated it hit the connection rod with a hammer or try spinning it. This is kind of a uncontrolled pressure but the added heat may help
You may find it hard to get .... "In the United States, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) regards iodine and compounds containing iodine (ionic iodides, iodoform, ethyl iodide, and so on) as reagents useful for the clandestine manufacture of methamphetamine." boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=588385 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iodine www.google.com.au/#q=where+can+you+buy+iodine+in+the+USA
You are going to be watching for leakage coming out the bottom, maybe a tub or bucket to catch it. Would it be posible to seal the top end off, turn the whole thing over ad fill the crank end and allow it to soak also?
How about you tie the engine to the tree and the con rod to a truck or tractor and floor it :) Looking forward to the next glass head brig's update. Thanks.
Another great video taking us to places that most people will never visit. That maybe a good thing! From Johannesburg Kool-Aid to pumpkin vines climbing pine trees. Good luck on the removal. We you be tracking the rebuild too? Thanks Everett for sharing. Chuck in Kansas
The moment of truth is coming.. will it move? hope it does! You're right, it's a big piston and they do present bigger problems when corrosion sets in. It depends how far the water migrated too. Good luck with it!
I dont know if this will work on this engine but seen it done on smaller siezed pistons here in the UK. Could you take the plug out of the end of the bore and make a new one but with a grease nipple or similar on the end? As liquid doesnt compress and you pump more fluid in in theory it should shove the piston out
Pull that pipe plug out of the head and put a brass rod down it, that wack it with a big hammer. The brass won't damage the piston it it has some type of groove or cups on the face of it. That might get it moving just enough to yank it out the back side with a slide hammer
I prefer using acetone because it does evaporate. means it'll penetrate in and then when the acetone evaps it won't go anywhere
one of those electric magnetic oil pan warmers put on the inside cylinder and turned on for a few hours every day might help as you well know patience is a weapon
Patience and persistence!!☺

Thanks Bud!! We'll probably try to do something with it this Wed.!!☺

I worked on Battleships and Aircraft Carriers back in the 80's!! I didn't do any mechanical work on them but seen them engines ripped apart!!☺
i made a hydro jack tool that attaches to the big rod end.. and applies about 1000lbs of pressure and then just tap the cyl with a rubber mallet a few times until it comes lose..
I have used white vinegar to dissolve rust , you need to clean the oil etc out before you try though as it won't work through oil

Thanks Bud!! Hopefully we can get some movement!!☺
We had volunteer pumpkins this year too, but ours didn't grow up into a tree. Pretty cool.
Yeah I'm more interested in the pumpkin now than the engine!!☺
Looking forward to part 3 and the startup!

Time, patience and some dynamite will free it up. If done right, it will also take care of the pumpkin.
You sure you're not John 'Hickok' ?
I have a good imagination, and that mental picture made me laugh.
Good thing the kids missed the pumpkin tree part otherwise we'd have to try and plant one next year lol. Hope you guys get the engine freed up.
Thanks Buddy!! I think the Kids would have a blast growing a pumpkin tree!!☺
You're right RK,, not too many will get the JIm Jones Koolaid reference. That stuff loosened a few things,,, eeeeek.
Thanks as always pal.
Hopefully we can get some movement from the Koolaid!!☺
Interesting mix

compressed air is dangerous as hell... please don't try that... use water and a pressure washer... make sure to get all the air out...
It's gunna take some time I recon...I had to unseize a boat engine once to use the block and crank and heads...Lots of soaking and banging on stuff. There's a vid of the outcome somewhere.
Hopefully we can get some movement from the Juice!!☺
That tree pumpkin is pretty awesome!
Yeah Buddy!! We'll have to get an update on it!!☺
Good luck. I can't wait to see inside that cylinder.
Thanks Mate!! Yeah hopefully it's not shot!!☺

I like the burning charcoal Idea ...I have had a few old timers tell me They used Iodine in old tractors that were stuck
I never heard of iodine being used!! I wouldn't even know where to get it!!☺
I don't know if a drugstore would still sell it
You may find it hard to get ....

Warm heat with the fluid still in cyl. Heat er up one day, let it cool down next day. Over and over again. No fire Wrenches.
Can't believe it took that much Jim Jones Kool-aid.
We probably could have put another gallon in there, it's a big cylinder!!☺
You are going to be watching for leakage coming out the bottom, maybe a tub or bucket to catch it. Would it be posible to seal the top end off, turn the whole thing over ad fill the crank end and allow it to soak also?
If that doesn't work surely a fire will. Well isn't that weird, pumpkins in a tree haha Nice video Roadking
Thanks Bud!!☺

interesting mixture

Thanks alot Chuck!!☺
Hopefully you guys can get it freed up!!
We'll see Wed. or Thurs!!☺
hey looks like you used the acetone and trans fluid tip! I had suggested that awhile ago under a different account name. hope it works out for yah!
The moment of truth is coming.. will it move? hope it does! You're right, it's a big piston and they do present bigger problems when corrosion sets in. It depends how far the water migrated too. Good luck with it!
Thanks Bud!! We'll probably try to do something with it this Wed.!!☺
I bet it comes free man .. Thumbs up !!
Thanks Bud!! Hope you're right!!☺
This is a good one...can't wait to see how it come out. Pumpkins in trees...hhahahahaha
Hopefully we can get some movement from the Juice!!☺
Let's hope that sorts it out. Home grown pumpkin, that's cool :)
Yeah Buddy!!☺
should be interesting to see if it works, remember to bring hot dogs and marsh mellows when you have the bbq, maybe so hobo stew even....
Nice work! :) Jack
Thanks Jack!!☺
I was wondering how this was coming along... I was hoping to see the grease zero.... I still haven't had time to work on my Stover :(
We still might go the grease route or maybe a porta-power!!☺
hope it works
We'll see on Wed. or Thurs!!☺
This might be strange but fill it up with white vinegar!!! eats rust like nobody's business!!!
I dont know if this will work on this engine but seen it done on smaller siezed pistons here in the UK. Could you take the plug out of the end of the bore and make a new one but with a grease nipple or similar on the end? As liquid doesnt compress and you pump more fluid in in theory it should shove the piston out
Yeah we'll be trying that on Wed, we're using a porta- power instead of grease!!☺
I would start wearing a helmet around the tree
Yeah Buddy!!☺
Kool-Aid Guyana tragedy
Marvel Mystery Oil to free it? I’ve heard of people using it on stuck rings.
two questions where is episode three and how much for the other engine. ps thanks for the interesting video series
Thanks Bud!! We'll probably make a new crank for the other engine, so I doubt he'll sell it!!☺
ugh well good luck with it and episode three? lol
Pull that pipe plug out of the head and put a brass rod down it, that wack it with a big hammer. The brass won't damage the piston it it has some type of groove or cups on the face of it. That might get it moving just enough to yank it out the back side with a slide hammer
It might help but I know someone who popped a hole in the piston but they got the piston welded and got the engine running .
I'm fixing up an old single cylinder marine engine and the water jacket is abit on the rusty side. any useful tips for clearing it out?
Maybe some vinegar, it works and it's cheap!!☺
Thanks, Much appreciated!
i didnt think unseizing an engine was possible
It depends how it was seized!!☺
I knew Jim Jones,he was the neighborhood “Kool Aid Mom”.
Wouldn't it have been easier to lay the engine on its side and then fill it full of your solution??
Yeah ya could do that, it would take alot more oil and you would lose the advantage of 4 pounds of gravitational force!!☺
I should plant a bunch of green beans and stuff under a tree.
We might have stumbled onto something eh!!☺
Don't park under that tree. lol That will help free it up. 👍👍
Hopefully we can get some movement from the Juice!!☺
Man ,,,if that doesn't do it I'll bet the charcoal will!
Something has to give Mate!!☺
U used this mixture before with success?
MrVailtown it's well known mechanic concoction.. basically Marvel mystery oil...
Yeah Buddy!!☺
Nope, not interested in the engine any more, I want to see the progress of the Pumpkin in the tree... :P
I think that's why I like you Wacky Brits so much!! We think alike!!☺
automatic trans fluid wont work as fast as mototycle oil will. heat and motorcycle oil do wonders
