@jake canebrake No. It's been done in many cities. We did it back in Miami. Everyone that argues against always use the same talking points; we need to focus on education, jobs etc. That's what we did when we defunded. It freed up money to do just that.
For example the cops were complaining about the amount of calls for mental health intervention. Pointing out they weren't trained for it and shouldn't be point on such calls. Money was moved from the PD to the county mental health to create an interdiction unit of psychological professionals to answer those calls with a police escort if needed.
To say the point if defunding is to render the police ineffective is like saying the green new deal wants to end air travel. It's just a lie.

"Defund" shouldn't be used. It has a literal definition that ppl in opposition of it will use as a good reason to vehemently oppose it and for ppl on the fence to strongly consider opposing it. Wording is very very important in any conversation and this convo is extremely significant
Yeah, I saw someone on Twitter post a list of all the ideas behind "Defund the Police" and the first one was: 1. Police will be funded. It's just confusing. I love all the policy changes of "Defund the Police" and I'm glad radical change is being discussed, but a lot of people are conflating "Defund the Police" with "Abolish the Police". I did too before I researched it, but a lot of people won't take time to research. Maybe "Downsize the Police"? "Revision Policing"...?

My 16 year old said yesterday, instead of refunding the police, we need reorientation and reformation both funding and training. Instead of them killing us, they need to tap into our knowledge and strength.
Right! But because she's 16 she doesn't understand or remember that we have been down the "reform" road for decades and decades. They won't do it because they are there to protect the rich. As someone who has always lived in very mixed race and class neighborhoods, the police do not give equal service to all members of the same damn neighborhood, especially if they think someone is poorer. And they seem to automatically assume every one is dangerous as that is all they ever see. When real movement towards reform was happening and police were having positive interactions with kids and members of the community, it stopped. They weren't getting as many arrests. And the brutality just continued but in secret. It's out of the closet now and it's like they don't want it to change. We foster way to much hate and lack of accountability. We need to stop privatizing our public schools and REFUND our schools and stop closing them for real estate deals. Your 16 year old needs to understand that this has been a long game played by the radical right. We DO have hope though.

I agree on that. Someone said on twitter that defunding the police means privatizing the police. And if you privatize the police that means the people who have the money will get the best policing. And it's inescapable to consider the relation crime has with economics.
But if you have a concern about control of a narrative because of your slogan, then you need to not make it so easy for the other side to twist the narrative with a slogan that doesn't hold up well to it's literal meaning.
Decrease funding is a more appropriate term.
I don't really care what you call it, I would like to know what the plan and transition looks like. If you don't know what the word means, then ask. Does it mean that we take money from the current budget and cut back or does it mean that new budget money is allocated to these programs instead of adding to the budget for officers? What does the statistical data say and how long does it take to see the benefits of defunding? How do we address the potential issues by potentially not having a sufficiently staffed police force? I think we need to start with the process of hiring, training, psychiatric trauma evaluations before we start talking about defunding. I need to see more details around the plan and the transition because I don't care what anyone says, the police are the first call I'm making when I feel threatened or need to be protected. The idea of not having that safety net is not what's up....But here is my question? Why don't we already have funding to allocate to education, schools, medical insurance, senior citizen care? Where did all this money come from to bail out corporations, what about Pompeo's party budget? What the hell are they doing with our tax dollars and why would we not collect taxes from the rich to help out, Why do you need to rob Peter to pay Paul. Huh?
Don't play this game. It doesn't matter what you call it, the republicans and the moderates who enjoy the police state will fight it. There is no way to package this to get through to these people. Colin I gotta say I’m confused. How does defunding the police stop police brutality? Why do we need to divert or detract funding? Why wouldn’t these programs already have funding? If they need more than stop bailing out corporations that font need it and stop giving tax breaks to the wealthy. What the hell are they doing with our tax dollars? Too many unanswered questions.
I just believe that it's not that she doesn't understand what is being said, she was just trying not to listen . Just like how they are saying peaceful protesting is best way to go, but we have been protesting peacefully for years and they just doesn't want to listen.

Defund: is a verb: meaning to prevent from continuing to receive funds.
Now add POLICE simple.
Reimagine is a word that they immediately understand.
Perfect example: Police were at my 90 year old neighbor's house 4 times to kick her out, because she could no longer afford to pay her lot rent and at the same time had developed dementia, so she was not making financial decisions correctly. She owned her home, but not the lot, and the 4th time the police were there, for a couple hours, they literally kicked her out, made her leave in her car, in which she had no insurance on after not paying it. Her house set empty for a long time, while she was living in her car at the local Circle K store. Neither the police or the people who called the police on her thought to call social services instead. So, because she was alone, with no family to help, she lost her home and everything in it. They would not even let her get her personal stuff, she had very little with her. A stranger came by, a man in a car,, who nobody vetted,, learned about the situation, and took her in, and probably fixed it so that her social security check went to them. Who knows who this man was, but she went with him because she had nowhere else to go, and the cops were present when the man took her into his care, they let him take her, and she had never met him before! I told the police that I was a nurse and that she definitely needed medical care, that she showed signs of dementia and could not make decisions properly, but they did not care, as they said they were just doing their job, which was to make her leave her house and then leave Circle K parking lot, as she couldn't live there. I will never forget seeing her at Circle K living out of her car, first the police chase her away from her home, but then they chased her away from living in her car at Circle K, plus, she had no money for food & gas, so a stranger was allowed to take her, her car,, and her monthluy ss check, who knows what. Also, since she defaulted on paying the lot rent on her paid for mobile home, the management was able to sell her home and keep the profit, she would get nothing, it was in the contract. We have not seen or heard of her since. At the time, we couldn't get involved because I had just had surgery, but the only people sent to handle this situation was the police, and they do not follow up, so what if the man who took her does not take her to the doctor or provide proper care? No one would know, her mobile phone service was cut off due to not paying her bill. Also, this happened in one of the wealthiest cities in the world, and even though she was broke, living on ss, she had a very nice mobile home in a nice neighborhood, and she had not always been poor.
I am so sorry. The cops do need proper training. How a society treats old people is a reflection of how "civilised that society is"

The point is we need better resources in the black communities! Here in Miami we don’t have resources in our communities. Educate yourself on defunding PERIOD! We need police but we also need help in our communities!

First time I heard the protestors say “Defund the police”, my first question was “What do they mean by Defunding the police?” If any thing, there needs to be an over haul of all police departments, and yes more funds need to be put into the community to help them thrive. Do not need more funds to add more police on the force. They could use the funds on more training for the police working in black communities.
And we don't want defunding to turn into privatization as it has with the defunding of our public schools. Our teachers get pushed out of unions when they work for charter schools but our police never have their union busted.
