Why not use say Coke to lower pH? Baking soda to raise it? Vinegar to lower. It's not the space program people. No need to buy pH up and down $$$$. Simple stuff you already have at home.
I agree about the vinegar, but I'd use something a little less complex for a basic solution, like say baking soda. My reservation about common substitutes is that you're also introducing dissolved solids (or sugars and all the other stuff if you used coke), which might promote slime and other things you dont want.
